Lausanne, SWITZERLAND - 1997 World Figure Skating Championships, Ice Dancing, Free Dance - First, a profile piece on both Oksana Grishuk and Evgeny Platov of Russia and their teammates, Anjelika Krylova and Oleg Ovsiannikov, and the competitiveness between them that has developed during the season as Krylova & Ovsiannikov were winning competitions while Grishuk & Platov sat out most of the season with injuries. In the Free Dance here, Grishuk & Platov would easily win this dance earning two 6.0s. As much as I love this dance from them (and it is my favorite), the fact of the matter is that they finished their dance 3 seconds after their music ended and should have received nothing higher than a 5.9 for Presentation. In addition, what I found interesting was the final lift in the program that was exact same move that Jayne Torvill & Christopher Dean of Great Britain invented and performed at the 1994 Winter Olympic Games. At those Games, Torvill & Dean received deductions for that lift. Here, Grishuk & Platov did not receive any deductions from 7 of the 9 judges, even though it was not performed as well as it could have been (as they were rushing to finish with music). Nevertheless, Grishuk & Platov would another World Title here.

They were definitely not at their best here. Pasha was injured so they weren't in shape, and they were a bit sloppy. Interesting point about that final lift. The judges were selective in their deductions (and they may have also missed the mistake). They did this beautifully at Europeans.

I thought their music was Peter Gabriel's "Caravan," but I could be mistaken. Anyway, when you skate a program to a single piece of music, you better be able to carry it through. The gold standard in this regard is Torvill&Dean's Bolero. So well-rehearsed and choreographed that it earned iconic status. This program missed the marked on a number of points, though a pretty good performance. Grishuk and Platov were very-much a continuation of the frantic style of Bestemianova & Bukin; furious speed, repetitive movements, an emphasis on making the easy stuff look difficult. When you try to cram all that into a program, you run the risk of overflowing your vessel, the music, so to speak. As a local judge with whom I skated told me the day after G&P's performance; "crappy program, looked like they threw it together the night before." My assessment was not that severe, but my overall impression at the time was; "needed another month." That said, I can at least say that I thought this performance was more memorable than their Olympic Gold Medal performance in '98; I always have to call up the vid to remember anything about it and I never even care to watch the whole thing.
@gk891
@gk891 9 жыл бұрын
Grishuk & Platov were technically far more competent than Bestemianova & Bukin ever were. This program had some errors but it was ambitious and really showcased their incredible running edges. But yes, they definitely needed some more time as they sat out for part of the season due to his injury. And yes, some of their free dances that they had skated while being coached by Natalia Linichuk could definitely fit what you described like their 94 and 96 free dances which were hot messes. Their 92, 93, 97, and 98 free dances however were superbly choreographed and had excellent content (and IMO it's not by coincidence that none of them were choreographed by Linichuk).

gk891 I agree with you all on pretty much every point. I do feel this dance is much better than the one that won the Olympics the following year. BTW, the music is Peter Gabriel's "The Feeling Begins," which is on "The Last Temptation of Christ" soundtrack. Wonderful music but it is hard to time the ending just right.
@gk891
@gk891 9 жыл бұрын
LWOPP It seems like their 1998 free dance was an acquired taste artistically which I can understand (I also hated her tacky costume). But I absolutely loved it from a technical standpoint as it never stopped moving. They were constantly gliding over deep running edges from within challenging handholds. And all of their moves were done with very little set-up time. As for this free dance, I think the error on the lift towards the end may have put them behind the music. But it's incredible how they used absolutely every single beat while demonstrating incredible running edges (that was a strength of theirs that wasn't utilized well during their days with Linichuk).

It may just be that the "Bolero" Torvill - Dean gold standard. But this is their only dance that was remembered. And how many dances Grischuk - Platov can recall? This is Rock and Roll, that this oriental dance certainly Nagano Olympic and demonstration in the same place!

Blazhevino I haven't heard such nonsense for a long time. Nobody has so many memorable dances as T&D: OD Rumba, Paso Doble, Summertime, FTMAD, Barnum, Mack and Mabel and lots of incredible programs from their pro career. Bolero is famous among many non-skating fans. While non-skating fans have no idea who Grishuk and Platov even are.

Not only did they miss the ending of the music, and rushed/messed up the final lift, but there were many elements that were almost identical to those in Jayne and Chris' routine Song of India from the mid 80s. It felt as though there were a lot of double standards going on in ice dance around this period of the 90s.

How on Earth could a judge give a six for this - it is a rip off of the Song of India? But put that to one side. The six meant perfection, finishing 3 seconds after your music is not perfection. No argument.

@MsRumex 3 жыл бұрын
@@WittleHokie I know that Linichuk said that she was the one responsible for this programs (FD and OD). But this FD is sooo different from everything else she had ever done for this team, and Grishuk and Platov always were saying that Linichuk did work mostly with Krylova and Ovsjannikov and did not work with them (so that they had to do a lot of choreography themselves). And Tarasova in her book wrote, that when G\P came to her, both of their programs did have some major rules violations (and they had to reconstruct an OD and did make some changes in FD as well). And also Linichuk did try her best not to let Grichuk and Platov be part of the Russsian national team in this season. I'd say it is a very weird behaviour for someone who created for them a great FD...... Yet, if she wanted another team to became Russian team #1 - it would be quite logical not to pay much attention to G\P (imho)

I completely agree. I found them boring, scruffy and not likable at all. Their first olympic title was a fix and the second olympic was a very bad poor man's bolero. They tried to be like Torvill and dean - but unfortunately absolutely not anywhere in the same league.

There were, and never more than with these two, Judges overscored them numerous times. Their speed and running edges were "first rate," as Dick would say. Still, I didn't care for them because I don't like to see so much "borrowed" from other skaters' programs. For a long time they skated too far apart for long spells, and I never felt their lifts went anywhere. :::meow:::
