It's a nice comparison, but if you really think about it, it's a bit of a mismatch! An adult male Grizzly averages a weight of 300 kgs, while a male Silverback averages a 150 kgs. So the bear is twice the size. A Gorilla might be strong and be able to push and pull, but the Grizzly is the predator here. Gorillas eat Veggies mostly, while Grizzlies can hunt & kill big mammals. The Gorilla's body is more Vulnerable .. being similar to a human..it has kill points .. the head..face .. NECK.. arteries.. i think a Gorilla would be severely injured in a fight with a Grizzly ( that happens to have a thick protective Coat ) .. and might die from severe blood loss and shock. Intelligence is not a factor here.. we won't be seeing a Gorilla picking up a big rock and hitting the Grizzly on the head with it. Result : Grizzly would win.

A friend of mine encountered a grizzly in Alaska a decade ago. He was fishing when a rather large grizzly ( he estimated at near 1000lbs) didn’t appreciate his presence on his fishing grounds. My friend got away, getting to his truck on time, but the grizzly took a souvenir, one of the truck doors, and ripped it off like a flies wing. Grizzlies are POWERFUL.

@Eric Pope Yes a grizzly certainly can. It has been witnessed and documented. Bears are incredibly strong. Grizzlies have been known to roll boulders over well over 2000 lbs. They can rip logs open with their claws in search of grubs. I knew of a metal worker that left a sandwich on his work bench. A young black bear went in after it. When the metal worker returned, he startled the bear. It turned and swatted a 55 gallon steel drum full of scrap metal and sent it across the room.

There are something like 10-12 documented incidents of this type of decapitation occurring. Bears are incredibly powerful animals in respect to their size. The knives on their paws aren't even necessary for them to kill; often the raw brute force of a paws impact is enough.

Grizzlies are a sub-species of brown bears and are probably the most typically considered when mentioned. The Kodiak bear is the largest sub-species, typically weighing at least 300 lbs more than grizzlies or other brown bear species. I think a grizzly bear would defeat a gorilla more often than not. A kodiak bear would defeat a gorilla every time, it's just too large for the gorilla to handle.

As intimidating as the gorillas may look think of them as a humanoid, a jacked up enhanced version but less intelligent human. I think one good swipe from the Grizzly's razor-sharp claws would likely cause too much damage to a gorilla, causing it to bleed out and weaken quickly. The gorilla would need to bite and tear at the bear's face to stand any chance at all, but I don't see a gorilla having much effect on the thick coat and blubbery skin of a full size, large Grizzly. It honestly would not be much of a challenge. The Grizzly just has too many deadly weapons for a gorilla to handle in a one on one battle in the open.

Silverbacks will lay down their lives while fighting off predators in order to allow their troops the chance to escape. Meaning that even if the grizzly were to somehow kill a silverback in a fight, the silverback would kill the bear in return. Even if the bear wins the gorilla will make him work for it, and would make him use everything he's got. There's never a free meal when a silverback is involved. Everyone in the bush knows this. If a silverback can fight off and kill a lion, he can do it to a grizzly bear. All the gorilla has to do to win the fight himself is compel the grizzly to pursue him up a tree. Which shouldn't be hard since bears are natural climbers too. Once in the tree, the silverback would do what his natural instincts compel him to do when fighting the big cats who hunt their troops: use his superior agility and movement on the branches in order to provide him with the only opening he'll need so that he can bring his superior physical strength into use and knock the bear out of the tree. The fall likely wouldn't kill the bear (depends on what he lands on), but it would certainly break some bones and injure him to the point where the grizzly is no longer capable of winning the fight.

The bite force difference is less than 100 psi, grizzly going for 1200-1250 while gorilla have 1300 psi bite force. So much so for the more powerful bite force. Also a grizzly fur is thicker than gorilla fur, IDK why you think it's the other way. A grizzly would also beat any carnivore that a gorilla have to deal with. You have no clue of what a grizzly is capable of. Brown bear are Apex predator for a reason. They are fast, heavy/bulky, are really strong, have claws that deal massive damage etc. A grizzly can tank more damage, deal as much if not more damage due to their long ass claws, run faster, are almost if not as agile as gorilla, are as good climber than gorilla etc. 9 out of 10 a grizzly would win.

This is one of the closest battles. The most import key to victory for either is where this battle takes place. If there are lots of trees and fallen logs the gorrila has the win. It can climb and attack and counter attack from the canopy and silverbacks have been known to throw logs at opposing animals to scare them off. If it's more like an open field then the grizzly bear has the edge. It can charge forward with out the threat of objects or the gorilla climbing away and counter attacking.

Alaskan 40 + years. Here's my biased thoughts from exposure n experience. Been in 4x4 doing 40 - 45 mph keeping up with griz. Terrain got rough. Griz never slowed. Independent, full time 4x4 with 2" + studs. Interior griz spend more time hunting, then fighting to bring prey down sometimes covering miles per day. Home range much larger than under banana plant home range. I have not looked up and compared miles per day covered or caloric intake to survive, but a griz comes from a tougher environment in my opinion. I have lived, worked and hunted outside 10 hour day at 0 to -69 F not considering 0 - 60 mph winds. Closer to poles life is tougher. Most people have not the experience. Bears are amazing in quickness, dexterity, endurance. When digging or moving rocks for rodents, insects have that leverage knowledge as in wrestling. Collegiate wrestler. Got into a tug-of-war with a blackie over a suburban door. Window up but 14" face to face. Saw eye pupils constrict as thought out leverage advantage and took it. Gorillas are strong and nerds of this rumination. When i teach I tell that most people look at muscle n strength as winning. That is one leg of a 4 leg chair. Endurance, knowledge and how big is dog inside or desire to keep going when beat down. As I said, I am biased tipping my hat to Mr Griz. But definitely open to listening n learning. Thx.

We all pretty much give credit to the griizzly for being the winner here for all the obvious reasons. But let me be devil's advocate here. Gorilla is intelligent but that's by animal standards not human. People see it the way they would if you were a Gorilla. Most of you know about Grillies seen documents and just plain out more resourceful than a Gorilla would be by alot and it would be hard for us to win even if we had the same physical attributes especially people who know how to fight. We could go for the eyes, use our strength to dislocate a bear's jaw, use rocks try to crush bear's skull on and on. But a Gorilla won't think this way, its body is to susceptible to a bears 5in claws and its bread and butter "brute strength" will not help it here. Its disadvantage is nearly insurmountable. IF there is hope to be found it's only through the attack on the bear skull with its pounding fists can break something before it bleeds out or gets mauled.
