This is all good advice, I too have a Grizzly lathe. The only real issue I have had has been objects binding up and falling from the chuck, luckily no real damage or injuries.

An instructor once told us that your pilot drill diameter should be the same as the width of the web on your bigger drill bit. Works very well. Also it is worth the time to drill it out incrementally, especially on a 2hp lathe.

Thanks for sharing this. New Grizzly lathe owner here, and I truly appreciate this.

Hay thanks for the information I appreciate that. I don't have a metal lathe yet but I've been thinking about it. I have a mini wood lathe and it's been great.

I looks like you haven't yet shaped the cut off blade. Its just like any other HSS blank it needs a small amount of grinding of clearances, it makes a noticeable difference. I like to add small amount of positive rake. I also don't like the tip to be flat and blunt it causes too much squealing, I like to angle back the tip ever so slightly. I leaves a nub on one end but I usually go back and face it off anyways. This of course changes depending on the material choice and your machine/workstyle. Also make sure your actually square with the work. Also go slow and steady unless your a production shop that needs parts done on a schedule no reason to rush. I go on my slowest speed the lathe will go and like you said with a lot of lube. Going slower usually means if something starts to go south you and see it and react to it. Too much squealing means back off and approach again slower. That being said my metal bandsaw is my preferred cut off method. Not a fan of the carbide parting tool. I find they tend to loosen up or brake the tip on light cutting. Carbide really only seems to shine on faster heavier cuts. Maybe why I haven't had luck with them. Lastly ideally you want to part close to the chuck as possible. Parting father away can mean deflection in the part which can lead to "grabbing" especially on a blade with no clearances. If you have one setup a steady rest close to the parting line. Or use a tailstock for the majority of the cut (not a full depth cut, that would be bad) then remove tailstock and sometimes you can just break off the part by wiggling it. As for accidents yes I have turned on my lathe the chuck hit my carbide insert shattering the carbide. Pieces of carbide were embedded in one of the steel jaws. Chuck and holder were fine. I just stinks that I have blemish on one of chuck jaws. Another time I was drilling a fairly deep hole and as I was retracting I back out too much ejecting the chuck out of the tailstock. Didn't realize that so I unlocked the tailstock and moved the tailstock back. Now the chuck was only being supported by the drill bit inside the work. It was wobbling around like crazy before I could do anything the drill bit snapped and sent the chuck flying. I made a depth stop collar on my tailstock's neck to keep that from happening.

I did grind the blade and I had many successful cut offs before I had a problem. I probably got too relaxed and didn't pay attention to the details. I think you are correct that I probably was not square to the work. I was also probably in a hurry which always causes problems. I have also backed out to far with the tailstock. Never caused a problem, but could have been an issue. I like the depth stop collar idea. That's something that I will definitely add to my setup.

Pilot drill and work up in sizes especially on the reduced shanks that you are using in your Jacobs chuck.

You’ll get there I’ve crashed my big lathe once my machines are old as hell except the mill be careful learn from your mistakes learn to sharpen your tools and drills.

The reason you had trouble with the blade cut off tool is because of too much stickout from the tool holder. Must also be set accurately on center.

I've had the same problem with that damn hss cut off tool it will be doing good and all a sudden it will hang up on the part an it will put this huge gash in the part or brake the tool off so i leave my belt a little bit loose just in case of such a thing it will slip instead of braking something

I once had a shop teacher that would have flogged me with a knotted plow line if I approached a lath wearing a hoodie with the draw string in it (whether I planned on using the lathe at the time or not).
@zelko440772 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, Yes I agree you have to make sure you have the proper clothing. The hoodie that I am wearing is something you would not want to wear when operating a lathe. Also things like jewelry and long hair could result in serious injury.
