My dad (A native of Canmore and lifelong hunter/fisherman) was in Kananaskis heading up to a lake on a cirque for fishing that required he use a secured line to reach a narrow shelf that led around a point across the top of a scree slope above the falls to another secured line to the bowl rim. After reaching the ledge, he proceeded around the point to see a sow Grizzly with two cubs on the same ledge facing him. Realizing the rod was of no use, he was preparing to jump onto the scree slope and into the falls when the sow turned, chased the cubs up and returned to the lake. This was the ONLY time I ever knew him to decide not to go fishing that day.

Having this kind of a life is a choice. Anybody can have whatever they want IF they want it bad enough. Question is, what are YOU willing to give up to chase your dream?? Jan/I are Alaskan bushpeople w many similar experiences. Had to give up the soft pussey city life where society wipes your ass for you. HARD life, but worth it. My wife Jan is tougher than most marines. Im a blessed man!! Were going on 30 years in the bush & every day is a new adventure. One is never more truly ALIVE when u know a grizzly could come charging out at any moment & eat your ass. We dont even go to the outhouse w/o a slug bear shotgun & theres no door on the outhouse either so you can see what might be trying to sneak up on you.

As an older female, age 71, I do not hunt now due to a car accident that happened in 2006 and nearly disabled me completely. It has been a long and difficult recovery. But as a youth, I did learn how to shoot both rifles and handguns a well as bow and arrow, which at various times I used for protection, and also to bag food. But I appreciate all the wisdom and stories that you share about both hunting and about Bigfoot. No longer able to work as a nurse, I became a writer and artist, and now am writing and illustrating a book in which which those who survive a worldwide cataclysm have learned and are contuinuing to learn how to live in cooperation and to survive in a strange new world. What I am getting from you here is proving to be invaluable in rounding out my story.... Bigfoot also survived the cataclysm in certain pockets of earth that were undamaged. Surprising twists in consciousness and learning to survive in cooperation occur... Thank you!

i have a story about how fast an Ontario black bear is...driving on a remote highway 2 hrs from Thunder Bay Ontario, I've driven this highway for years and one spring year we counted 28 bears in a 3 hrs stretch of highway. We stopped to fish on the way up and had a few small perch with us in hopes to catch more. It was really and muggy that day. We continued to drive north and a huge probably 400lb older black bear just wandered out from the bush and proceeded to lay right in the middle of the highway. He came out because of the bugs and to lay on the cool shaded area of pavement. I had to stop to give him room and slowly drive passed, i stopped right next to him and he was literally 6 feet from the drivers door and he was panting hard and you could see his chest heaving and it looked like he was on his last breath with his heavy breathing. The person who was with me said she wanted to get a pic so she suggested she get out of the Suv to get a pic just by the hood...I immediately said "NO, absolutely not", she figured the bear was so exhausted that it was safe. I know enough about bears. I said watch this, i took a perch and tossed it on the road and that bear pounced so fast it took like a "second" for him to move from an exhausted laying position to full upright eating position 6 or 8 feet away. She almost had a heart attack and couldn't believe what she just witnessed. I said that's why for one you listen to me while out in the bush and why i have such respect for these beautiful creatures....

The biggest brown bear I've seen was on the Russian River where it runs into the Kenai. While walking down the Russian, my son and I saw a male brownie at about 300 yards. He caught wind of us to stood up to sniff the air. As soon as he caught wind of us ran into the woods. I wore my .44 mag. In a crossed draw holster, my son and I went to the tree he leaned on and measured his height at 14 feet. My son can hear better than I can and said the bear is tearing the brush away from us.

I’m so glad you decided to start putting your stories and adventures out there. I’m amazed how you talk so natural at the camera like you’re talking to a buddy around the camp fire. Have listened to a lot of your fascinating stories now and really marvel at the close encounters you’ve had. Chasing mother bears, the bore bear rushes you “ and just happen” to night attack you . I’ve heard you tell on numerous occasions of grizzlys both wounded and not watching you in the thicket. The one with the mountain grizzly chasing the moose with the West Virginia guy is just crazy. By the law of mathematical averages there is no way you missed all those close calls by shear luck . No freaking way. Can be no doubt be no doubt God was protecting you and that encloses these ominous Sasquatch also. Heck most the Indians believe them to be evil spirit monsters of some sort. Any way I know your a highly independent man so I would never try hard to preach to you. You said in one video you were going to check out the Bible. Please consider the part about Christ and the gospel. Keep up the great videos and please be careful.

Your vary much correct. Grizzly bears really don't frighten horses all that much. My wife and three other women encountered a sow grizzly and her three cubs. The sow bluffed charge my wife and her horse three times and the horses acted as though they were dealing with an obnoxious dog and showed no fear. When riding in grizzly country; you stay on the horse; the horse will protect you; a kick from those cannons will change a grizzly's attitude real quick. Stay on your horse!!!!

For law enforcement officers, a combative person coming at you w a knife is given the "21 foot rule". If they are at or within that range, they get ventilated. Couldn't imagine a charging grizzly bear. Even if you had a holstered hand gun, you probably wouldn't have been able to get it out before its 1st impact. Only if you had a stout live chambered firearm at the ready, you might have had a chance. But only w a calmly placed 1st shot. Your first story, in my mind, is a story of God's grace and protection (again). It is how a person looks at things and places them into perspective- I mean right now, you could be little bits and peices of old dried bear poop scattered along that mountain side right now. May the Lord continue to bless you and keep you safe. (He does give us the breath of life and the heavens declair His righteousness) I love your work and your hunting trainings! Good job!

Great stories. I'm gonna tell a Griz encounter I survived cause I want to know if something that happened during it has ever happened to you Steve.. Wanted to fly fish the Lamar River in Yellowstone. About a 6 mile hike into the Backcountry. Me and my girlfriend went to the ranger station to get the Backcountry permit. Rangers advised us a sow with cubs was back in there and did not think it wise to go in, but were willing to give us the permit reluctantly after I convinced them we were bear smart. Ends up not so much this time. My girlfriend was not into it, but after a couple hours of persuasion she reluctantly agreed. We set off about noon and all went well. Lots of critters, elk, deer, moose, but no bears we saw on the way in. Hammered the cutties that evening for epic fishing btw. Pulled the gear up the bear pole, made a fire which I tended all night and all went well. No bears. Girl not so comfortable the whole time. So we fished upstream with packs on me thinking we'd cut cross country to save distance on the way back. Big mistake that was in hindsight So we're hiking cross country and there are plateau shifts in Yellowstone cause of the volcanic activity and there was about a ten foot high rock face to climb to the next plateau. So I scale it and poke my head up and about 20 yards away I see an animal, a large animal. I see an elk. Broad daylight and I see an elk. I hop up and reach down to help my girlfriend and whisper to her "there's an elk right here" She looks behind me and her eyes go wide and terrified. She says "Ron, that's Grizzly"! I turn around and now the sow is about 15 yards from me standing tall and sort of sniffing/snorting. My heart sank, cause I'm thinking she is gonna whack me off the ledge and I got nowhere to go and this is gonna hurt. I sort of instinctually pushed my girlfriend back down. And as I 'm doing that I'm watching the bear and she takes off! I mean fast, like liquid speed running through snags and forest. I will never forget how fast she ran away! I did not see the cubs, but my guess is she went right to them. Thankfully we weren't between her and them. Needless to say we were scared shitless. Realize we did have bells on too. The wind and the damn rock face were the perfect storm We hightailed it back to the trail but along the way came across a damn elk kill I presume was hers. What a damn mess that was! You never saw hikers faster than us after that shit. We made it out fine and dandy. Girlfriend was pissed off. 👍 And rightly so probably But so it bugged me, why did I see a damn elk!? So I did a little research. It's called "premature closure" where our minds trick us. Sort of like this, the last thing I wanted to see was a Griz, and there was lots of elk around and elk scat, so I was prepped to see an elk and didn't want to see a bear, so my brain, broad daylight, 20 yards away saw a damn elk! Apparently this shit happens often to us, especially driving. Our mind "protects" us from the true gravity of the situation. Anyway Steve, anything like that ever happen to you? It changed the way I see the world afterwards, at least how I think I'm seeing it.
