Jet lag is worse the older we get. Kind of like a hangover that way. :). I haven't hunted in years, not for any philosophical objections, just...reasons. Two days ago, the fur buyer was in town. I met him at a taxidermy shop to sell my furs. The taxidermist had an Alaskan wolf rug he had done.....WOW! My biggest bear is 6 foot.....that wolf is bigger! I have not seen any wolf from Idaho that big.

Steve, Love the channel and every topic you cover. I grew up with twin bro and friends only shooting BB guns & 22's shooting small game. Then nothing but Mt-bike riding which created a conflict in my mind on whether would follow through with my plan to hunt big game later in life, as I didn't know if I wanted to kill deer as I had grown attached to them while watched them during rides. But thanks to you and much research I will start hunting wolves and coyotes with no regrets, as the killing these machines need to be brought back in control. Not a fan of the wolf hunting thing and was a big supporter for re-introduction of the wolf to western states of the USA. But now I also get that with my support of the wolf that they too have to be managed just like all the wildlife we have brought back from the destruction of the 1800-early 1900's. Good video and great story and correct lessons of the reality of wildlife management.

as a hunter, I think all hunters should go out and hunt a predator at least once. just for the learning experience. hearing about how they are and actually seeing how smart they truly are is completely different. i’ve never had the chance to hunt bears or wolves, but i’ve taken out tons of coyotes. and even coyotes are smart as hell, and if you’re hunting them in a wide open area, you might see them coming in, but in a heavily wooded area? no way. and you better watch your down wind side. they’ll sneak right in on ya. lol.

Had to take out a mountain lion that was on my buddies property and that was an experience to say the least. Multiple times to bait it out that thing was incredibly intelligent and knew when it just seemed too good to be true. Took about 2 days to get it. I agree that hunters should take on a predator just to get the other side of the tracks feeling. True fear laying in wait for that thing to show.

My buddy has young kids, dogs and livestock the lion killed a few of his cattle and his kids played outside so ge wasn't waiting for anything to happen to them. He sells the cattle and his wife breeds and sells horses for their income. The lion hurt their income and is a huge threat to him and his family so it had to be dealt with. Now why I hunt is I like eating meat and some meats taste differently than others and you cant buy them in a store so the only way to get them is to go hunting. I'm not in it for the trophies or mounting animals I use the meat the animal supplies and I don't waste any of the meat it supplies. I believe in how the Indians did it. Only kill what you need and don't waste. Admire the animal and thank it for supplying for your needs. Some animals you can only admire when they are dead and that lion was a sight. They are very beautiful but also very dangerous and in that lions case the danger out weighed the beauty. Sorry for the essay lol couldn't give a short answer it wouldn't explain.

Wolves ain't stupid.......I've had a few run ins with em over the years....usually they will keep their distance......had to chase a couple off of us once with a camp axe...another time while goose hunting at a remote tent camp ,four of us with heavy #2 mag loads just went nuts on a good sized pack, probably a dozen to fourteen of them that got waaaay too close and would not back off...we killed five of em.....punched some holes in em and threw em in the lake....feed the crawdads, feed the trout....anyways.. we had a great two more days of absolutely undisturbed goose and duck shooting, full limits all around...ran into a Conservation Officer heading out , he checked our weapons, ammo , tags , carcasses etc..we told him what happened with the wolf pack...he just shrugged and said ' thats fine!...if you can...kill more next time fellas'

Check some vids here on how to turn pellet loads quickly into slug results. Has something to do with lightly cutting part way through the plastic hull just above the brass. The brass stays but the rest goes down range. For your encounter too late now but anyone with a bit of time to consider options may be safer if all they have are pellet loads. Good job keeping calm under pressure too! Wolves are way bigger than people realize until close.

And yeah some gray/timber wolves can grow to HUGE sizes....there’s pics of hunters holding up dead wolves and the wolf is taller than they are, feet to head, and their heads can be absolutely massive, much bigger than a dog’s head

YT has ways to do it and even show test results with modern plastic hulls and ammo products. Re wolves I know. They can get 32-34" at the shoulder and largest North American one was 235lbs.

Good to know about stealth cams. I have the same issue with cuddeback. My first in lasted years. Old 35mm style. All the new ones last maybe a year. Then they don’t want to fix it. They want 100.00 and you can pick a new one. Same deal over and over. Frustrating to say the least.

That's an old wingmaster! My dad had one like it, his dad bought it for him. It got stolen years back. I've been looking for one like it since. There a dime a dozen, but the one's with the lines on the fore grip are hard to find. Most are checkered.

Thanks. Great story . I saw a wolf years ago in the Mt Adams Area, everyone said it was a coyote. At 2 hundred yards thru my 9 power scope , looked like a German Shepherd ,so I disagree. That was about 1968. Hunting with my cousin Jerry a year or so earlier he asked me if I could hit anything with my dad's old 30-30 I was packing on this deer hunt I swear 1 minute later a grouse jumped up on my left , I cocked the rifle and shot it's head off at about 12 foot from the hip. Got the bragging rights that day and Jerry hasn't forgotten it . LOL . Keep the stories coming. John W Gates !

I was on the Montana side of the little Joe road and saw the largest wolf I had ever seen. It was all black and I thought it was a bear at first. I have seen a lot of wolves, but that one actually scared me. It could have picked up my 140lb German shepherd and carried it off. Another great hunting story Steve, keep them coming.

That’s crazy, I have 5 stealth cams and use them regularly for spring Bear starting early March and they stay out until November for late deer, I just move them around as needed for what species I’m targeting. Only time one gave me any issue was when I forgot to format the SD card after I checked it.

Hi Steve, I'm in Michigan & here we have coyotes that have a bit of grey wolf blood line mixed into them. Makes for some rather large yotes, cousin shot one that weighed 51 lbs., but best I've done is 44lbs. I'd love to hear from you on what the best trail camera you've found is, that is valuable info. Very brave talking about wolves. The people that blindly defend them aren't usually very kind when you talking about these things. Not saying they shouldn't be protected but at the end of the day they are dangerous predator animals and can become a threat so the need for population control is needed. Sorry, I love wolves too much to come around to the thinking it is ok to kill them. Why am I even on this channel? Because I am willing to learn where you are coming from, and try not to hate all of you for killing beautiful wild things. When my son started hunting deer when he was about 12 I cried constantly and fretted around the house the entire time, then cried every time I thought about the dead deer. I love deer, too, like all wild animals. My son made me try deer meat and it was amazing, but I still couldn't get over the killing. I am in the minority I see. I am still going to try to learn from all of you. Please tell me, why do you think it is alright to kill wolves indiscriminately?

@@violet9853 The case for wolves is population control or if they are in an area that threatens others. Wolves are beautiful animals but they are predators that are dangerous. If you didn't cull the wolf population then the elk, deer, rabbit and everything else in area would have low population numbers. Its to keep balance to nature in the area. Otherwise it'll be like Siberia. The same thing goes into deer/elk hunting it culls the herd so plant life and vegetation doesn't get wiped out. Also you aren't the type I was talking about when I said blindly defending. You didn't wish death on me and a whole mess of other things. You're respectful and wanting to start a conversation.

@@violet9853, first they are not killed indescriminately. After, field studies, data collection, and biodiversity goals are met, biologist make decisions as to when and where hunting is needed. Many management techniques are employed before hunting is considered. In most cases hunting requires game management to set license, tags, and area limits. Violet, you do realize wolves kill and eat deer, elk, moose, goats, sheep, caribou, antelope, livestock, pets, and you if they were hungry and you're all that's available at that time. 🐺 wolves must be managed, being hunted and dispatched humanely is better than many other methods.

I work for a utility company in Wisconsin and the linemen have stories of having to check or fix backwoods lines in the winter where they're 100-200 yards from the truck where wolves will escort them back to the truck or just sit at the bottom of the poles where they can just see their eyes reflecting in the flashlights.

When I’m in the wild the wolves scare me the most. A friend of mine took photos in 2009ish of a huge 25 member pack of Canadian wolves only 26-27 miles from where I live here in Idaho. When I saw the pictures I couldn’t believe how enormous they are! They almost cut off his path of retreat to his truck. Fish and Game had a field day with those photos. SHIVERING!!!!!

Not trying to pick a right but they were there first. In the early 1900s they were hunted to extinction in the US. Since being reintroduced into Yellowstone they are thriving again. I agree the wolves don't need all of the protection but they do need some.

I've had really good luck with Foxelli. I have 4 , no issues. I had 1 good Stealthcam , the second wouldn't work unless you were 2 feet in front of it at night. My climate is a bit warmer.

Setup a camera one year with deer guts lots wolf tracks. Cam failed, site clean next day. Reset next day with deer remains , camera worked but just foxes & they were on edge next night. I told my son let's check east of site ,sure enough 50 yds away lotsa fresh wolf tracks in snow. Love hunting canines. No wolves here, but called a coyote almost in my lap one morning, fixated on movement crosswind. 6th sense kicked in about the same time I heard and felt gravel hit my side (sitting down, back against a tree, rifle on sticks). He came from upwind and almost ran into me. Turned himself inside out teying to get away and I stoooex him with a "woof" at about 20 paces. Was friggin awesome. Can't imagine calling one 4 of 5 times the mass of a 'yote. Peace Brother! Keep up the good work and thanks for the access to your life. Guiding is truly an all encompassing lifestyle. I had a trail cam set in the perfect spot. What appeared to be a good buck according to the tracks in the snow, walked right by my cam, & it failed to work. Very frustrating!

Great story Steve. What hunting apps do you have that would benefit mid-west or eastern hunters? Whitetail, Eastern Turkeys, and coyotes mainly.

Once again thanks for the fascinating story. Talk about mono a mono apex predators. I really love wolves and am intrigued by the cunning and intelligence . I fully realize you have to cull them to keep the balance between the wolves and the hooves. This almost sounded like a Vietnam vet about to be ambushed by Charlie . I’ve heard stories of these wild packs surrounding and tearing men to shreds. The government and media try to cover up this info but I heard a man on J. Rogan mention this. And as teacher of history have read numerous accounts from credible sources in the past of wolves killing people the never the less the media assures us this never happens . Was wondering what your opinion was on this subject. Are you a ware of any cases in which wolves prey on humans . Thanks for all the great effort and stories I hope you can compile all this in a book someday .

Didn't know you could hunt wolves , maybe I'm thinking of here in the states, I'm sure there are alot more up there. Cool story , I'll bet there very hard to hunt, very smart.
