Most municipalities here in Japan test the sirens every day. Usually, the test coincides with a poignant and relevant time during the day. For example, Maebashi City in Gunma does it at noon (lunchtime!) and many others at either the end of daylight (mostly 17:00), but Futtsu City does it at 16:00 during the winter or to simply signify the end of 'business hours' (17:00) which is largely irrelevant as things and people simply keep going anyway.

Correct etiquette for walking along the 'sando', the path up to a shrine is to walk to one side. The centre is reserved for the God. As you've seen, lots of Japanese people are unaware and do this, but I have been scolded many a time for not walking to one side. "Japanese spice" and it has written 'ステーキスパイス'(sute-ki supaisu=steak spice). 🤣 Take anything any Japanese person says with the preface 'Japanese XXXX' with a bucket of salt. Most of the time it's a Japanese version of something prevalent all over the world or even a common product made by an international conglomerate that is available here also. You will need to dig to find the real Japanese treasures. For overlanders, the word for 'mountain pass' in Japanse is 'toge' and the character for this is originally Japanese '峠 comprised of mountain '山' and jp '上' and down '下'. The three components are of course originally Chinese however.
