I'd never seen this episode before, & it really was packed with emotion. That last scene really tore my heart out. Great job by both Greene & Landon for sure. I felt for Little Joe, as all my siblings are "half". My mom had 2 sons, & my dad had 3 before they met, married, & had me. I'm the only child of their union, & the only girl for either of them. My brothers were all grown before I came along, so I was raised like an only child. I've only got a relationship with 1 of the 5 brothers. They're so much older than I am (I'm 57), so they're going to start dying off soon, I'm sure. My dad died when I was 7, & my mom passed on 11 years ago. So I really don't have much of a family, as I wasn't blessed with children either. I understand Joe wanting to hang on to his newfound brother. Especially when you're the youngest of the family.

@@HowiesgirlIn my family, there are 10 of us siblings. I'm number 5. There are 4 girls and 6 boys. Out of all of them, only one of my brothers is a full sibling. 2 of my brothers are half brothers and three brothers are step brothers. Of my sisters, 2 are half and 1 is a step sister. We never really thought about any of us as being step, half or full. We were all just brothers and sisters. I've lost 4 of my brothers, there are 6 of us left now. I miss the ones who are gone but I'm so grateful for the ones I have left.

I love how Ben, father treats his family, he cares deeply when they are emotionally hurt, physically hurt, even to the point of tucking them in and say take of yourself first. He welcomed this newcomer, Joe's older brother with open arms especially after his over reaction in the tavern. Bonanza and the Cartwrights are a true inspiration, as to what family actually equals in every fashion.

Only thing i didn't like was that BEN let Clay go way to easily. Ben claimed that he's old enough to make his own decisions but, if it had been ADAM, HOSS or JOE trying to leave BEN would have shown way more effort and emotion. It's happened on other shows and BEN get's tough and puts them i their place or sweats it a LOT more then he did with CLAY and Clay was equally important to JOE. I do love that JOE parted with his MOMs picture, although the woman in the picture is not the WOMAN who played in MARIE my LOVE as Joes mother. SHe was a hot blonde and this woman was an average brunette. And there is another episode that Joe shows a picture of his mom and she looks more like the Monalisa.

I remember watching this beautifully crafted episode when it first aired. It still resonates. What made Bonanza so special were the themes of family, justice and honesty. Clay was actually more of a Cartwright than he realized. To be so brutally honest with himself, Ben and Joe was heart-rending and brave. A pity that he could not have been a recurring character in the series. Perhaps the next time a sequel is attempted his character will return. Until then, many thanks for another fine episode.

Awww, sweet Joe, he has his brothers by his father, now he wants his brother by his mother to be with him too, under the same roof. Clay wouldn't fit in though because he's problematic, even he said trouble follows him. He wasn't raised like them, he's missing some elements that Joe, Hoss and Adam have as a result of being raised by Ben. He'll bring issues to the family that they don't deserve. It's bad enough that outside issues are always coming at them, but they don't need an "issue magnet" in the same house with them. Will was the same way....just problematic.😒

"Issue magnet". Funny. True. Did u create that phrase? Love it. Well written episode. Same kinda thing with Will, as another commenter here said.

Chicago New Bonanza fan. About 3 years. Such a great show. I grew up with Little House on the Prairie loved Michael Landon so I gave it a shot. Now I love the Big Teddy Bear 🧸 Hoss ❤😊

I completely agree that the show should have taken another step in making part two of this episode but unfortunately back then they didn't make follow up episodes let's of shows back then just left you think of the episode you just watched it's to bad they didn't have any sense in making part two love watching this show

Continuity issues: Elizabeth (Adam's Mum) had dark hair & eyes like him, she was from Boston & they both had Northeastern accents. Inger (Hoss' Mum was Swedish, she had blonde hair & blue eyes like him & was more earthy than the other 2. Marie (Joe's Mum) was blonde w/delicate facial features that Joe shared. Her pic in the framed locket on Ben's desk was completely different from the 1 in this episode. Also she was part Creole not Cajun.

Bonanza existed before I got to start watching TV back in the early 60s. I never understood why they burned the Chevrolet insignia into the map and nobody in my family could explain it to me. I understand now it's advertising lol and they used a Branding iron. For a brief moment I met Ben Cartwright in a local Bank in my neighborhood in Brentwood Los Angeles back in the early 1990s. He acknowledged me by calling me hello young feller. Every actor I ever met always said that to me it's with the exception of Jack klugman. That's what they were taught to say in the studios when they used to get trained to deal with the public Some years earlier I had the opportunity to meet for a brief moment Little Joe at a benefit being held in Malibu to keep the emergency room open 24 hours a day. He was mad at me because I was videotaping doing my job. If you could see the evil look he gives me at one point on the video tape it would make you laugh. Then he walks over to ask me who I am and what am I doing there. So it wasn't necessarily high nice to meet you type situation LOL. So later on when everybody was sitting down eating dinner with their groups and little Joe with his whole family, I walked around the circular table video taping the whole family which irritated Little Joe. I videotaped other groups also but he was just mad that I was there videotaping. I was working for a TV station out of Santa Barbara at the time. Just doing my job which he should have understood. On the plus side, I got to see one of my old classmates from second grade at the benefit and she was always one of the prettiest girls in school, and then I got to see Olivia Newton-John in person and Ali McGraw. Both of those women I had major crushes on. Bonanza was never the same to me after hoss died. I like the character candy that joined the show, but I couldn't stand that redheaded kid that joined the show. I don't believe I ever saw the last episodes of Bonanza because I can just couldn't stand it anymore. It was just the father and little Joe left. And then when Little Joe's wife got murdered, he went on a tirade and that became so psycho that was it for the show.

I never knew about the Chevrolet logo thing until now

@@cgallagher5023 if you watch Bonanza on most of these videos it just shows the map burning up. But they used to be a Chevrolet logo that burned through the map.

Yes, I remember the Chevrolet logo as a boy. I knew it was a sponsor thing. I was a third rate news reporter for a weekly in Orange, Ca. My editor usually handed me the press passes to me, so I saw and met many Hollywood people. I also met many at Los Angeles Little Theatres. Many actors worked in stage. I saw incredible theater. Vincent Price was a treasure, as well as Al Lewis. My treasured memories as an old man on the island of Cebu..

Yes, good story missed opportunity. When Adam left the show they should have brought back Joe's brother from the same morher.

The producers intended to bring in Guy Williams to replace Pernell Roberts!! But Michael Landon was NOT happy about him on the show! ( He was top dog!)

@Nancy Drew. I agree completely! Clay could have come back with his mother's picture. That could have been the ice breaker to give him an excuse to come back. 🙂
