Bonanza - Episode 81 - Land Grab - The Cartwrights play host to an eccentric old soldier friend of Ben's while trying to track down a mysterious swindler named Polk who is illegally deeding parcels of the Ponderosa to settlers looking for homesteads.
Land Grab
Director: David Orrick McDearmon
Writer: Ward Hawkins
Stars: Dan Blocker, Michael Landon, Lorne Greene
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 31 December 1961 USA
Filming Locations: Diamond Peak, Lake Tahoe, California, USA
Storyline:
Mike Sullivan (George Mitchell) and his cronies pitch camp at the Ponderosa, claiming that they've been sold a generous portion of the ranch's best land. It turns out that Sullivan and others have been hornswoggled by a fellow named John Zink, or maybe John Polk. Ben Cartwright finds himself in a bind when Zink, er, Polk turns out to be none other than his old Army comrade Colonel Bragg. Written on rottentomatoes.com
Reviews:
"John McGiver who usually played eccentric comic role in his career plays it quite serious as a guest of Lorne Greene's at the Ponderosa. He's got a broken leg and is mending.
At the same time some settlers have settled on Ponderosa claiming they bought this land from a dealer with their hard earned cash. One fatality on each side happens before he issues are resolved.
Watch tis episode. McGiver will be a revelation." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

Thank you so very much Grjngo!! Everytime Bonanza comes on, I feel like I'm sitting with my daddy watching his favorite TV show. He kicked back in his recliner and I next to him laying on the couch and sharing whatever snack he brought in to share. So many memories.. he's been gone since 2009 and I sure do miss him sooo! Another deep and intense episode. Notice that, near the beginning, Ben tells Joe do put his rifle away, but when the settler draws his rifle on the ranch hand, his uncle does not do the same. Then there are the monologues, with impassioned points of view. And the series of unjustified killings. Even a bit of humor to round it out. Brilliant script.

this was one of the few episodes where the location scenes were actually filmed at Incline Village, Lake Tahoe...as opposed to a soundstage and surrounding mountains near Hollywood...for over 35 years, there was a tourist attraction, “Ponderosa Ranch” at Incline Village...but it was demolished late last summer...very, very sad

Really...The cut and spliced many scence from areas which had very little location travel, expense...The reason was because of the beginning of the Vietnam war..The war which was public and was seen by most Americans on nightly news..Bonanza became more popular as the Vietnam war escalated...Family hour..Guest stars were required to inject themselves into the script to provide a sense of comfort to John Q public...Was Lorne Greene really shot on the show???yes...by me.... From big screen to tv screen... Into the homes of America... The horses used in many a scene were Tennessee Walkers.....

I live in the mountains in Montana in a cabin. I burn 14 cords of wood. To heat and cook with being off the grid. But using the power in my pickup to recharge my cellphone. I use a chainsaw to cut my wood down in lengths then load up my pickup over and over to get my wood near my cabin. Back early on only using a axe and a saw to cut wood. They were tough men back then. I am a physically fit man. But if I ever had to use only a axe and saw to cut my wood. I would have froze to death the first winter. Because even me having a chainsaw. I had run out of wood during the winter before. But in a day cut another cord of wood. But only because of having a chainsaw. Just very tough people way back. It is why they did not live very long. They beat their bodies to death. No going to a store to get something for a headache. No calling 911. No nothing. They had to suck it all up. Not be whining over everything little thing like today.

The endings are always exciting and a dish of frontier justice is served up. It’s is often so preposterous though as in Ben at the end saying to that loud mouth trouble maker that he’d be happy to have him as a neighbor. That man started a lot of trouble as was as bad as Polk. And how many times has Ben and sons been double-crossed by ‘old’ friends. About as many times as women who should have married Cartwrights.

Did you like the ending? We accept many quirky things, like ignoring the land office, in order to create an entertaining story but "I guess you've paid the price." for not killing me in a ambush was ridiculous! If his son/cousin died, then that being the price for this land could make sense. And then "Might proud to have you as neighbors." was shockingly inappropriate. As other commentators said, this man hid a murder, rallied the settlers against him and ambushed him. You don't want a neighbor so unstable and prone to violence as this guy. How about this: Another settler steps forward to apologize and ask to stay. Ben replies "No, you can't have this land. I have other plans for it and I don't like being ambushed on my own land. With this money you can find other land." The ring leader steps forward to say "It's my fault. I was so scared to lose this land that I only saw you as an enemy, not a man. I pushed them to fight you. I was wrong. I apologize." THEN Ben would have reason to say, "ok, I have some land..." Another alternative is to say ok to the other settlers but sending the ring leader on his way because people around here won't accept you because of all that you have done. Besides, you will need this money for a lawyer for your cousin(?), if he survives. But that's not the feel good that audiences of the time apparently wanted.

No matter what room a tub is in, they'd have to take the water in buckets out of the house to empty it, until plumbing was built in. At least a living room would be closer to the door than a bedroom, and much closer than an upstairs room. They portrayed bath-taking upstairs in the Cartwright/Bonanza house, and that adds taking the water up and down the stairs too.

I live in a cabin I built, has a bathroom with shower.... If I want a soak I bring a big old copper tub in next to the fire... Better than a freezing butt... Add a glass of bourbon, bathing in the cabin can be quite civilised.

Huh? Why doesn't say "Meet you at the land office tomorrow morning."? Would be too short a show. I suspect that Ben will find land for them but let's see how it plays out. 31:50 In westerns, they can follow tracks over hill and dale but Ben can't follow the recent tracks of a wagon for a 1/4 mile. :D 48:30 How did they all learn of the death before Ben got there? Sure, he could have met someone on the way but felt strange to me. Of course, it also felt strange that the father didn't dismount and approach the door like a normal person, but then the body would be a problem. Could have had him at the door and then chased off, only turning back to say "Hey, without the beard" when he was in the seat but that would take more time.

Why is Michael Landon not listed as one of the actors? I don't check every episode I watch, but I've looked at most of the credits. This episode list the other 3 as the stars 🌟 🌟 🌟. Does that mean he was the SUN?

Mike was in the opening titles exactly where he always is. They changed the 'reveal order' of the 4 main stars - week to week - so as not to make one seem more important or prominent than the others. In this episode it was Dan, Mike, Lorne then Pernell.

No particular offense meant to anyone, those two gals at the end were the obviousness of unattractive non marital for big ol Hoss, wow. The look on his face was humorously objective, ha. And that dammed old hateful military friend of Ben's was a total shock and did I get angry, ha. Here Joe was all over trying to find someone named Polk and he was in their home. And the hillbilly mentality was typical, stealing land, and killing some else's meat. And finally Ben brought them all together in the end, to wind things down and turn all into peace.
