Bonanza - Episode 39 - Day of Reckoning - As a reward for saving Ben Cartwright's life, an Indian named Matsou (Ricardo Montalban) is given a small parcel of Ponderosa land.
Day of Reckoning
Director: Richard Bartlett
Writers: Laurence Heath (teleplay) (as Leonard Heideman), R. Hamer Norris (teleplay) (as R. Harner Norris)
Stars: Lorne Greene, Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker
Genre: Western
Country: USA
Language: English
Release Date: 22 October 1960 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
Storyline:
As a reward for saving Ben Cartwright's life, an Indian named Matsou (Ricardo Montalban) is given a small parcel of Ponderosa land. Ben's Indian-hating neighbor Ike Daggett (Karl Swenson) violently objects to Matsou's presence. When his wife is killed in a raid, Daggett, holding Matsou responsible, and kills the Indian's wife (Madlyn Rhue) in retaliation.
Reviews:
"This is a well-intentioned attempt from early in the second series of "Bonanza" to sell the idea of Amerindian equality to the mass TV audience, decades after pioneering Hollywood movies did it a lot better. The Cartrights tend to get their liberalism somewhat half-assed here. Matsou, a younger Bannock chief (Ricardo Montalban), and his wife Atoya (Madlyn Rhue), a Shoshone, are outcast from both tribes and live on their own in the rocky high country of the Ponderosa. When they save Ben from Matsou's older brother Lagos (Anthony Caruso) and nurse him back to strength, he offers them his best farm land so they can raise crops and stock and live as white people. Matsou is skeptical and reluctant but, urged on by his wife's Christian pleadings that it's the best hope for their people, he tries. A rabid Indian-hating settler, Ike Daggett (Karl Swenson), another homesteader adjacent who has been gifted land by the Cartrights, does all he can to destroy this initiative. In a confrontation at Daggett's wife's funeral, he grabs a rifle while Ben restrains Matsou and shoots pregnant Atoya dead: "An eye for an eye!" he cries in good Christian spirit. Matsou takes revenge on Daggett but cannot go through with it on Ben. He returns to his people, promising to return in friendship. (As if he hasn't learnt by now!) Montalban was a fine figure of a man at 40, before back problems set in. And Madlyn Rhue too was a dish." Written by defrost-1 on IMDb.com
"This is one of those episodes that makes a person go...wow! We watch as an Indian tries to do the right thing. After saving Ben's life, he talks them into taking some land and becoming farmers. He's not too happy with the idea, but, but his beloved wife whom he loves very much and believes in God talks him into it.
This is one of those episodes that really tells the facts of life. We may think they are getting along, but are they really? When a person is raised to believe one thing, can they really change their beliefs enough to live a different way?
The events near the end are shocking and sad. But that's reality, folks. That's one think I like about Bonanza, Gunsmoke, and Rawhide - the truth is that sometimes the good guys don't win in the end.
Dead: 3" Written by mitchrmp on IMDb.com

Interesting to watch the struggles so many people had in the settlements of the midwest and further north. It's always good lesson's to learn about understanding, and forgiveness immediately after torturing someone that was so generous days before. The Bonanza and the Ponderosa have so much wisdom understanding and family love, and friendly acceptance, and forgiveness, and praying on national TV.

Many during the WWII were saying the Lord’s Prayer while being burnt to death by the enemy. Words mean nothing. Action is everything. All the various religions think they are right while thinking the rest is wrong. Can’t you just be a good person and leave the emptiness of such things behind? Bet you don’t care about the suffering of other creatures?

What you said is a nice sounding sentiment but I don't know that radiational occupation is practical anymore. There's enough of a market for native artwork that some people could make a living doing that. And hunting can cut down on your grocery bill, but apart from a very few examples traditional occupations don't pay the bills anymore.

This episode is so sad, the reality is what actually happened to the Native Americans was ten times worse than what this episode covered. They lost land, their children were taken and forced into colonization and sometimes they were never seen again, they were often attacked without provocation as well. As much as I hated hearing the language used against them in this episode it teaches people what they had to live through in this time period. Its important to learn history to understand the side of the people who were oppressed to learn the truth. I think Bonanza was diverse for its time period and really tried to project other cultures' realities even if it was heartbreaking. I hate that the origins of colonization were so ungodly and a failure of mankind. It's so sad that true equality still doesn't exist like it should today. I wish the world was a better place.

The Shoshone and Paiute had both taken lands that probably had belonged to others. Indeed, the pre-Columbian continent had been soaked with human bloodshed since about the time Asians crossed the Land bridge. And few inhabitants were even familiar with the wheel. Legally we are considered equal under the law. Skin color doesn't enter into it. Anyone that says differently is trying to sell you something.
@linsqopiring6816
@linsqopiring6816 2 жыл бұрын
@@GathKingLeppbertI Exactly. You can't even say that the natives living today are worse off than they would have been without colonization. Every time I see native people complaining about it I also see them wearing non traditional type clothes, using smart phones, using western medicine , modern means of transportation etc etc etc. And in Canada we have a lot of remote communities where the government is flying in all the things they need for their daily lives at tremendous expense. Those airplanes flying supplies in would not be doing that if it were not for colonization. Of course I do admit that a lot of really terrible crimes and abuses were committed against native people too.

I think you misunderstood. I'm pretty sure they would have turned him over to the sheriff for murdering the wife. And he knew it too that's why he pulled a gun on everyone and fled. The Cartwrights got him some medical help when he was about to die, but they've often done that in this series to people they would turn over to the sheriff once they were well enough.

@user-pd7il3xz5j
@user-pd7il3xz5j 3 жыл бұрын
That concept in the Torah is misinterpreted because the Oral Law goes WITH the Written Law. The Oral Law explains the details of all we learn in the Torah (Writen Law). The concept of an eye for an eye, etc means that the value of what was wrongly taken is given back. So, for example, if you take out someone's eye and that person is an artist the retribution to that individual would be more than say a social worker who doesn't need their eye to continue working.

@user-pd7il3xz5j 2 жыл бұрын
@@damionbujan6218 I explained it clearly. I'm sorry you don't understand. The concept comes from The Torah and is explained in the Oral Law. We don't take an eye if an eye is lost. That doesn't even make sense. The law is about paying back what you took from another person. It's about being responsible for the wrong you've done to another person and it encompasses monetary value of the person's loss. The courts determine the monetary loss. We don't run around poking out eyes if someone lost an eye.
