Reviews:
"Another awesome Bonanza episode. Here we learn more about the son's mother's. I have watched Bonanza on and off my whole life and still don't really know what it's all about with the 3 sons from 3 mothers, lol. I could cheat online at Wikipedia but since I have waited over 30 years now I may as well play it out and just watch all the episodes to discover it myself. This is a good one, I watched it because I read the summary about Lloyd Nolan bringing in Ben for murder and that was good since Lloyd is a very serious actor and determined in all of his films. I got interested in his deputy who I looked up Hal Baylor, a Marine Pacific War vet who was in Sands Of Iwo Jima who John Wayne (who never served because of health reasons I guess) berates him during training in the film, lol. Oh the irony.
The episode is great, but my main beef with this is that Ben lets the Inspector get off after all of this pain he has cause including a dead man. 50 minutes has it's limits for story and I don't recall Bonanza doing any two parters. It was also pretty early with this show 1960 so loose ends were not resolved so much. There wasn't even enough time for Ben to get back home, where Liitle Joe is itching for redemption against his mother and Adam would obtain counsel in a lawsuit but then again the whole thing was kept out of the courts so Joe's mother's past would stay silent.
8 of 10, played like an epic." Written by verbusen on IMDb.com
"What do you get when you have one head-strong and short tempered young man, a daddy who is accused of doing something wrong, and a dead mother's good name being threatened? One HECK of an episode!
I'm not sure what the best part was. Little Joe's firy temper in the newspaper office, then later in the hotel where he actually kills someone was good. The drama surrounding the gunfight was good as well. Pa's sacrificing his future for that of his baby boy's was touching. And the journey towards New Orleans was simply sweet.
Unlike many of the episodes of Bonanza and Gunsmoke, this episode ended on a positive note. Ben's almost-too-nice-for-his-own-good attitude was something that helped the turnout. I guarantee you Adam and Little Joe wouldn't have been that nice..." Written by mitchrmp on IMDb.com

GREAT STUNT WORK beginning at the 40:21 mark. When I first saw this fall on TV, I was dumbfounded. I had to come to YT to replay it in slow motion. It is amazing that this stuntman did not break his neck (or any other bones). Hats off to the unsung heroes of television and motion pictures!

Unrealistic? Maybe. But for me, this episode has great value in that it shows what a parent should be: selfless. Ben was willing to sacrifice himself so that his son could be free. Also, Joe went the distance to protect his father, and the memory of his beloved momma. That makes for great episode. Thanks again to Grjngo for sharing with us all!

What any person would do to another, man due to the hate, a projection of his own weaknesses guilt, and hating himself. What is beautiful and absorbing about Ben's character is it becomes the gentleman, as a Father, friend, his character is based in principle, principle is harmony, we are in harmony with all of nature, and our brothers are inculcated in nature.

Wonderful to see the late, great Barry Fitzgerald as the printer. Barry starred alongside John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara as Michaleen Og Flynn in John Ford’s Classic 1951 movie “The Quiet Man”, set in West Ireland, and Ireland’s favourite movie to this very day. Great episode of Bonanza. Many thanks for posting it 🙏🏻

That wasn't Barry Fitzgerald - it was Arthur Shields, his brother. Shields played Protestant minister Cyril Playfair in "The Quiet Man" while his brother played the amiable drinking Michaeleen Flynn.

Dennis, the printer and editor for the newspaper, was Arthur Shields. He was a commonly seen Irish emigrant type in Hollywood. Not as recognized as Barry Fitzgerald but played his roles believably and professionally. The cameos of well known actors and instantly recognizable faces made watching Bonanza fun, even if the supposed shopkeeper or newspaper editor, etc., was a different person every time.

Adam was NOT convinced that Joe's mother treated him like her own.....and seeing in the first episode how he spoke to Joe about his mother, it does not seem that Adam was very happy with Joe's mother :)

Indeed. In the Julia Bulette Story, Joe tells Ben how he overheard Adam complaining that because of Joe's mother he/they couldn't go everywhere or do everything they wanted. On Bonanza they mostly show how the Cartwrights are a close-knit loyal family, but when Marie comes into the story, then it seems there were a lot of challenges: they faced discrimination because she was part Creole (actually a person of colour?), because of her language and and the ways of her people, she was blackmailed over the incident when a man (Simon La Roche himself maybe?) was set up to make her first husband think she is cheating on him which led to her becoming an outcast in New Orleans (they should have made an episode of this, it would have been so dramatic!) Adam apparently found it hard to accept her as his new mother after Inger. I think that might be also one of the reasons for his accasionally surfacing resentment of Little Joe at times. Yet she was Ben's favourite wife, he spent most years with her, he keeps a lot of things in the house that remind him of her (the rapiers, the picture (sometimes only hers), the music box) and he still gets sad when he remembers moments he spent with her or avoids to go places where he used to take her. She gets more mentions I'd say than Elizabeth or Inger.

LaDuke was a big bully allowing his deputy to punch Little Joe before Little Joe could defend himself! He gave the law enforcement a bad name because he wasn't following the law. Instead he was seeking revenge against Ben Cartwright just because Ben was in the alley when LaDuke's own gun went off and he shot himself in the leg. Joe Cartwright had every right to be angry in this episode. To the idiots who didn't like Joe Cartwright having a hot temper in this episode: how would you feel if you were 19 or 20 years old and no one would tell you about your mother's background. If you're honest, then you would say that you would be angry too- especially since Joe's mother died when he was just a baby. Think about it. I meant to say that Ben was near the alley- not in the alley.
