i worked growing Rosemary and other herbs commercially for abut 7 years, there are good and bad varieties for ones that grow well, or ones that rot suddenly if they feel like it. Gorizia has bigger leaves, that you might not want to Bonsai but might be easier to keep alive. Arp is another one that is usually cold hardy if thats a problem in your area. Spice Islands is one that has a lot of mildew and mold issues in humid climates

The odd thing about rosemary bonsai not surviving repotting well is that they are one of the easiest plants to strike from cuttings. I've grown them simply by inserting a fresh cutting into sandy soil that had at least some soil moisture.

I can’t help but feel the notion of rosemary being difficult would be in cold places maybe cause of the harsh change in seasons for a Mediterranean plant. I’ve forgotten (in a warmer climate) about sprigs of rosemary in a jar before and found a jar of roots. If you have somewhere warm to keep it it probs won’t be phased if you’re harsh on the roots.

There are some Rosemarys that can survive up to -5 or -10 Celsius (Arp, Hill Hardy, Veittschochgeim and Blue Winter). But mine (foxtail) survived -15 this year, although I guess it was a lot warmer on my balcony.. I remommend you try to make them survive or just have it at home - it can survive the winter.

It's possibly getting a little late, and will definitely need to stay above freezing if you do. From what I've seen they start growing roots very early, so when we come along in spring and repot them, we cut off all the growth and set them back. In all honesty we just don't know the ideal time to repot them. Harry Harrington swears by Summer. I prefer early autumn when it's less hot. So far anyway!!

Midsummer, when rosemary and olive trees can supposedly handle repotting, I lost a gnarly rosemary 3 years old from cutting. I was even quite careful with the roots, so dunno why the dieback, and just when I thought I could make do with the rest, It just kept getting weaker and I got rid of it. I have a few more equally interesting rosemary I haven't messed with yet, but, since you seem to think early autumn is OK, I may just try again now. I've repotted in winter and had mixed results.

@grobonsai
@grobonsai 2 жыл бұрын
To be honest I don't know. Mine flowers in Spring. I do know that plants can flower unseasonably when they are stressed - so it might be a bad sign. But it could also be so strong and full of energy that it decided to flower again. Are there any other clues? Slow growth or dropping leaves? Pests such as aphids? If it isn't growing vigorously I'd err on the side of caution and assume stress.

The chopstick doesn’t do excessive damage, some minor bark. The issue with water is control, a lot harder to keep a portion of soil intact, and harder to mesh the new soil with the existing if it’s wet and ‘sticky’. Great if bare-rooting though

I haven't tried, but I suspect they would be challenging, due to the lower humidity we generally have indoors. They also love sun, so would suffer without supplemental light. Finally, they do need dormancy, so would need a period of cool temps over winter.

Of course! It is harder to control how much soil is removed, which disturbs the bacteria and fungi that are beneficial to the plant. By removing too much soil the plant becomes less stable. If washing some of the soil out but not all, the remaining soil becomes very wet it is more difficult to work new soil in because it becomes sticky. Washing the soil off is good when working with robust species, very healthy trees, and those that don't rely on the microorganisms. Or when there is an emergency in the roots and the risk caused by removing all the soil is less than the risk of keeping soil because the plant may die regardless. hope that made sense
