Great forest Darren! The aging looks graceful enough. I find I prefer the chopstick for everything except a nursery bucket first repot lol. And thanks for the shout out.- Also I need to send you a battery operated hand sprayer - yours is no good for the carpal tunnel! ❤️Candice

good job mate, and I did laugh loudly at the "not growing old gracefully" bit! If you can't laugh at yourself, who can you laugh at? I take that as a good sign, your mood must be improving if you can joke about yourself, and I really enjoyed this vid, it's a beauty planting and it'll be fine I am sure, you did a proper job boy! Keep it up Darren, you've really lifted my mood with this vid so thank you for that!

@grobonsai

The sphagnum locks the soil in place and holds moisture for native moss to establish. It doesn’t itself grow. Here’s a guide: Moss Top Dressing For Bonsai kzbin.infokE29ula_SK4?feature=share

So how do you identify which roots are dead and which are alive? Is this consistent across all plants? e.g. if I pull my mint plant out of it's pot to look at the roots, would I look for the same issues as if I were to remove my acer tree from it's pot?
@grobonsai
@grobonsai 2 жыл бұрын
Over time experience will help, but they will have a different colour and feel than the rest. Also the ‘bark’ (if i can call it that) will be very easy to dislodge - it will come away voluntarily. Roots don’t look the same from species to species, so dead ones also look different. Please bear in mind all my videos are specific to bonsai practices, which is a specialised subset of horticulture. A lot that applies to bonsai does not generalise, including soils

It is moss collected from similar surfaces to the soil I use (aggregate rather than wood). The moss is dried, shredded and sifted to remove dust and debris. Mixed 50/50 with dried and shredded sphagnum moss.
