Right now our government can be described as FUBAR. example for changing mindsets before and after election, the green party before: no weapon deliveries to warzones. Interesting video, Haley. Your 1st point was spot on, and I blame a combo of our educational system and social media, plus people living in their echo chambers and refusing to reevaluate their beliefs. The junk food issue here is disheartening, and I admit to being guilty as crap on this one. I am trying to improve by buying healthier items and in smaller amounts so nothing spoils. Small victories. The income disparity (edit: and the extreme corporate greed. Profit is fine, gouging is greed.) in this country is alarming and you are very correct that we (society) need to seriously evaluate how we address the lack of access to basic human needs like food, shelter, sanitary items like toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, feminine cycle supplies. We are failing each other in this regard and unfortunately, I don’t see a big desire to address it. In fact, where I am now (Texas, but native Floridian), it seems to be worsening and the “I got mine, you get yours” way of life has been worse since the pandemic.

In Germany, many of those items are not locked up because the "customers" steal for their own needs, but because they sell it off to bodegas nearby. Now one can argue that stealing ("having to steal") is still an indicator for poverty, but one should not imagine them being driven by their desire for clean teeth.

Let's put ourselves in the perspective of a free market radical: Prices are too high which opens opportunities for competitors producing more affordable things and taking the market away from those asking too high pries. If that doesn't happen and there's no general shortage of supplies making it impossible to go down with prices, there's a monopoly or oligopoly and this is where even proponents of free markets would ask for government regulation. It is not a purely american phenomenon though. Grocery chains reducing sizes while increasing prices is a phenomenon in many countries. It's never good if any one company becomes too powerful.

While grocery shopping I mostly ended up with the cheapest options rather than what I actually wanted. We have cheaper options for toothpaste here BUT the popular name brands are way too expensive
@beldin298711 ай бұрын
I must say, i buy a lot of the cheaper stuff at our Netto, in the end i mostly pay around 20 € buying grocerys for 1 week and thats it. But i once tried the cheap toothpaste, and in the end i put it in the trash after 5 days because the taste was just soo bad and i bought again Odol-Med3 for 1.49 or whatever. Also i once tried a cheaper version of Nutella, and even though i used it up, i will never buy it again, it also just tasted really good. But the toothpaste was really the worst so far, most cheaper stuff is quite OK.

I looked up a 3.4 oz tube of Sensodyne that is $6.98 at a Walmart in Ohio and the same kind is $9.99 (!) at a Walmart in Florida. But I compared a 6 oz tube of baking soda and peroxide Colgate and it was the same price at both Walmarts- $1.97. So I guess it depends a lot on what type of toothpaste you want.

i was also born in the USSR but it's a bit of an extreme comparing to those countries. The insane cost of groceries in the US and here in Canada is what you get with a completely unregulated market. Some amount of regulation of essential goods is usually better. But ofc blaming it only on the current gov is ridiculous.

02:45 "socialist procedures" --- this is what ALWAYS bothers me: that US people don't differentiate at all between "social" and "socialist". I mean, even the english-language Wikipedia says that "socialism" is a politic-economic system that aims for --- and now it comes! --- social ownership of the means of production. "means of production" is: capital, land, labour. And sorry, you guys are TOTALLY misguided if you think that any european country aims for this. Germany, for examples, defines it's economy as "Soziale Marktwirtschaft", social market economy. That is entirely different from socialism, or being socialistic. That was what you had in Eastern Germany, before the iron curtain fell. This name-calling "socialism" is somehow a smear campaign. But it's so wrong. If a US church feeds poor people with soup ... is that also socialism? No, it's just doing something social. Understanding that people are not homogenous, that we have strong and weak ones. And a politics that is social tries to help the weak ones, with the power of the strong ones. That doesn't mean that all land or company gets confiscated (like in former eastern europe), not at all. It just means that you don't have a heart of stone.

I don't think having something in bulk should make you more wasteful of that product. I also don't think people in USA are paying 5 times as much for a product as people in Germany. It just means that product is more exclusive, most Americans just won't buy it because of the price. That happens to me a lot. I'm British but living in Croatia. A lot of products I would buy in UK are very expensive here, so I just don't buy them. For example, I make a lot more cakes here because supermarket cakes are so expensive.
@HayleyAlexis11 ай бұрын
There are plenty of items that are 5-10x the German price in the USA. Toilet paper being one of them. I just looked up the cheapest toilet paper at Target vs DM which is a decent equivalent and the toilet paper from DM (German drugstore) is 3.55 X more expensive than the US version. Both generic branded/no name.

I am as a retired person living in the US. The little bit I can eat if I don't want to get fat I can easy afford. In Germany you have ridiculously high power bills and no AC. There is no room, everywhere people are breathing over your shoulder and privacy is an unknown term. Don't let me start as a German woman on the differences how I am treated here with high respect in public and also in business. American men are to die for! After you are used to be treated like that all German men can go home and stay there. People not helping each other? The US has the most fat people on the globe. Go to any food bank and look at the people standing in line. They are all overweight. I pay $40 a year at Costco and get excellent stuff. What's the big deal? I came to the US at 39 with $400, two suitcases and a child, spoke no English. If I could figure it out in no time how to have a great permanent life here than how hard can it be for the Americans who can do it in their own language? Stop complaining. Stop eating insanely expensive junk food, cook and bake the little own food you need and you won't have to cry over prices. You don't exactly look skinny honey.

Stop complaining the average salary is much higher in the us and in german supermarkets you have like 2 cereals you can choose from. you have to go to several supermarkets to get what i need. Especially in rural areas.

My German supermarket was in a very rural area and had 30+ cereals to choose from. The average salary is higher in the USA but it is not 2-4X the average German salary (which is what you are paying for a lot of items in the USA when grocery shopping).
