Here in NY state we don't use plastic bags anymore. We use reusable bags. But in some grocery stores you have to pay 5 cents for a paper bag. Which is ridiculous. But I have reusable bags

My mother passed down an old tradition called a pounding. We give gifts of a pound of flour, sugar, coffee, oatmeal, grits, etc. So all of our children who moved out get a pounding box. I carried this into spices, condiments, etc. Every pounding gift I have given is so appreciated.

That is a very “big” thing down here in the south (I’m in texas!) My dad is a pastor (since 1968!)Each time we moved to a new town/new church, the new congregation would give us a pounding. They pounded us with all the essentials that you spoke of, also canned goods, spices, paper products, etc.! Basically everything that wasn’t perishable, was included in a pounding. With a family of 6 (parents, 3 brothers and myself), receiving these poundings that would be given to us usually on the day we moved into the church home, was always a huge help! Now, dad and my bonus mama are all that’s left in the home. Dad is now semi-retired, and pastors a small country church now. Yet, even these tiny church families STILL do wonderful poundings. With dad, now 81yrs young, poundings are still a big blessing!

One thing that helps out is to learn the layout of your grocery store. Then write out your grocery list so you go from one side of the store to the other side. I feel when I shop that way it is easier.

I have learned in my 58yrs that if I keep everything organized in my cupboards and fridge with the plastic bins I tend to waste way less food and it makes grocery shopping easier as I just pull the bins out and see what I have (canned goods etc) and it’s all in one place. Love that you’re teaching the kids great life skills.

This is what my family does even with a 5 adult household we dont always use the whole loaf of bread so we freeze it and get out slices as needed . Sometimes if we buy bread rolls to have for the next day we freeze them so they frozen at their freshest and will come out that way . If we want it for that day for lunch or dinner then of course we wouldnt freeze it . Sometimes if a fair bit has used when frozen because we had been taking it out as needed and not much if left and we know we will use in few days we will leave it out.😬😉

My mom taught me all about shopping for groceries or retail growing up. She had me figure out how much an item cost after percentages off. It annoyed me as a teenager but as an adult I feel it has helped me save a lot of money. Like Jerad said, the generic is sometimes made in the same place as the brand names.

Thanks Shelley and Harlan for the tips on the bread ties and plastic around the drinks. I use reusable bags and divide my groceries into the bags. For example I put all the produce in one, dairy in insulated bag, cans in one, boxes in one and so on. It makes it easier to put away refrigerator and freezer items away first. Also avoid coupons that give you for example 50 cents off if you buy 3 cans of bush beans. I love using the self checkout at Walmart, Target, SAM’S and Albertsons.

In the UK we have 'best before' dates on our bread, dried and tinned products and fresh packaged fruit and veg. You can still use it past those dates, but it just means it might not be at it's best quality, but still edible.

Regarding bread, When it was just my husband and I eating, I discovered that if you pull out six or even eight slices of bread and then put the rest of the loaf in the freezer, and the bread that you've taken out into a zipper bag, your bread will not go stale and end up throwing away any. Thanks for the great tip on the bread tag colors. I think I would still look at the expiration date at it too because some stores especially the smaller ones you never know if it one might have been the previous week. I think it is an awesome thing that you are teaching your kids these life skills.

I never knew about the breas tie color . I keep my bread in the fridge cause it lasts longer in there. I never make a list. I'm unique though. I'm legally blind. I have less then 10% sight in one eye and depending on the lighting it's like I'm in a heavy fog. Now that being said I have a memory better than a computer. Wher my seeing eye human is coming to take me shopping I can take inventory of what's in my fridge; freezer and cupboards with out leaving the couch. I always know what I have and where it is. The only thing I tend to buy I don't need is ice cream. Love your channel and videos. If more people were like you the world would be a happier place. Keep Smiling :)

I recently went through my family's food areas and decluttered. There were canned food from 2009! Some of it even had disintegrated in the can and the can was completely empty! I fixed the shelves in the laundry room to show the cans as if they're in a grocery store, with the old things at the front and new things at the back. It's been working out great! One thing I noticed as you went through the cabinets is how there were a pair of scissors on the bottom shelf. Very bad if the baby starts crawling and gets into the cabinet somehow. Not sure if it's been moved since the video is like a month ago, but there's also a chance they're still laying there. For those recipe pages, I'd recommend a binder with dividers and page protectors. Instant coo book!

Lacey, don't worry, everyone at some time has forgotten about something and then found or remembered it to only find it spoiled. Mine was a small container of heavy cream that had gotten pushed behind some stuff meaning that half the container soured leaving me tearing up my icebox to find the odor. Then the proverbial forehead slap for forgetting it. Glad the kids are learning how to shop for a normal week. They can also start watching and catching thing on sale that they will need when the move. Take a few of the plastic storage bins each and start with the bathroom, then the kitchen, the pantry for non parishables, maybe the bedroom or living room. Also talk to any potential roommates so they can shop together or plan together what they agree on for the common living spaces.

Another tip is if you have Frazer space spend one after making large pot and pan meals like stew, lazzua and dived into smaller containers then you have meals for the whole week.
