Grocery shopping on the internet, in 1996

In a first for North America, the Cyber Market from Quebec grocery chain IGA meant customers could do their food shopping right at home in 1996. The downside is only 4% of people even have the Internet at home.

It worked in major cities. We used to shop online in Boston in the late 90s. It was cool, but the systems to do the ordering were cool for the day, but horrible by any modern standard.

We still don't really order groceries online. At my grocery store it's not even an option.

Pretty common here in Australia, either with delivery or you can order what you want online and then they'll pack it all for you ready to pick up. I don't bother with it myself though, prefer to choose fresh foods on my own. Probably more handy for people shopping for a family and getting lots of regular stuff.

In the US, by 1996, nearly 25% of the population had internet. Interesting that Canada, the next door neighbor, only had 4%. 🤔

I pass on shopping IGA in my area. Bad meat, too many expired and dusty shelf products. If I went there, I'd be very limited in what I get.
