Who else out there refuses to cook breakfast in the morning on trail and would rather sleep in? Whether you bust out the stove in the morning or eat on the go, tell me in the comments below, what is your favorite thing to eat on trail for breakfast? You can also do what I like to call “ breakfast couscous” normal couscous but you add in Raisins, dried pineapple, honey, and/or maple syrup. Something to mix it up when you want hot breakfasts but are sick of oatmeal.
@miken76293 жыл бұрын
I do 1 heaping cup of Raisin Bran plus 1/3 cup NIDO in a baggie. NIDO is creamier than milk powders. Add water, shake, and eat out of the baggie. My other favorite breakfast is to take a package of RAMEN , break up into tiny pieces, and don't use seasoning pack. Instead, add 1/4 cup Pioneer Country Gravy mix. On trail, add 1 cup boiling water and maybe some bacon pieces. It is a substitute for Biscuits and Gravy.

I always have coffee in the morning, which means that I always boil water in the morning. My favorite backpacking breakfast is instant oatmeal. The flavored instant oatmeals are too sweet for me, so I mix a regular (plain) packet with a flavored packet, add boiling water, and stir. Then I stir boiling water into the coffee (Starbucks VIA instant singles), add creamer (Mini Moo half-and-half singles), and start enjoying my coffee while I wait for the oatmeal to finish soaking.
@TheHungryHiker3 жыл бұрын
Cooking in the morning, even if it’s just to boil water is too much of a chore for me on trail. I’d rather sleep in. 😂
@DarinMcGrew3 жыл бұрын
Why not both? Sleep in, and then boil water (for coffee and oatmeal), so you have the best of both worlds?
@TheHungryHiker3 жыл бұрын
@@DarinMcGrew Most of the backpacking I've done has been thru-hiking, which means not a lot of time spent in camp in the morning. Instead, it's all about getting out of camp early so I can get in the miles for the day. I'd rather eat on the go and enjoy a longer lunch. I also don't drink coffee so not having a warm breakfast isn't something I miss on trail. Dinner on the otherhand...
@DarinMcGrew3 жыл бұрын
Most of my backpacking has been with kids from church. We've car-camped near the trailhead on Friday night, hiked in on Saturday, and hiked out on Sunday. It's definitely NOT thru-hiking. It's low mileage, low pressure, fun-for-newbies backpacking. Part of that is coffee and/or hot chocolate for everyone in the morning. The kids usually have 2-3 packets of flavored instant oatmeal, and the adults usually have 1-2 packets of flavored instant oatmeal mixed with 1-2 packets of regular (plain) instant oatmeal.

Many thru-hikers and backpackers practice the concept of having a second breakfast while out on trail. Hiking a lot of miles in one day makes people hungry because you burn so many calories doing it. I know I'm certainly not the only one who enjoys having a second breakfast when putting in the miles.
