I’m planning my first thru hike (and second ever backpacking trip) on the Colorado trail this July. Do you have any general advice for the CT? Also I’m struggling to figure out what pants to wear. I’m not super familiar with the weather in Colorado in the summer and I have thicker thighs so I’m worried about chafing. Do you have any recommendations?
@TheHungryHikerСағат бұрын
I have yet to hike anywhere in Colorado so I wouldn't be a great hiking resource for anything Colorado-specific, but I have thru-hiked before. When thru-hiking and even on long section hikes, I rarely wear pants. That's just been my personal preference. When I do wear trekking pants out on trail (during the winter, when it's raining/snowing), I like to wear the Athleta Headlands Hybrid Cargo II Tights. These things are comfortable, warm enough and have functional pockets. Gotta love that!! alnk.to/3ndrDe2

Thanks! I’ll definitely look into those! Do you have any recommendations for shorts that you like to thruhike in?

Hiking the Trans Catalina Trail is NOT a cheap backpacking trip. It often times requires a fair amount of time to plan the trip and cost to get to the island and camp on the island while you're there. Totally worth saving up for. This was a really fun trail to hike and so beautiful.

Great advice, i sleep now in a hammock but before justnon a blanket
@TheHungryHikerКүн бұрын
I've thought about hammock camping, but it seems like you'd have to be dependent on the trees around you in order to set it up. For someone like me who prefers to camp above treelike, I don't think hammock camping would be a great option for me. I really love sleeping in my tent.

Devils Dream is the most poorly located campsite, it is a mosquito heaven. The original campsites were located in the actual Indian Henry's meadow, but the parks folks, being ever mindful of overuse, moved it to Devils Dream...I am so thankful that I hiked this mountain in the late 1960s when you could camp in the meadow, no mosquitoes, beautiful sunsets of the mountain instead of the cold, dark and terrible location fo the new campsites at Devils Dream
@TheHungryHiker2 күн бұрын
Out of all the campsites we stayed at along the Wonderland Trail, Devil's Dream was one of my least favorites. It was close to town (Longmire) so I was excited to get here and get to resupply the next day. Luckily the day we stayed here, the weather had changed and the breeze had blown all the bugs out of the area, making the site not as miserable as all the other hikers had warned us about it being. I can't imagine being able to camp in the meadows. The meadows on our way here were so beautiful and the rangers who get to stay in the Indian Henry cabin are so lucky!!!
@bryanwallis2479Күн бұрын
@@TheHungryHiker We consider ourselves very lucky to be hiking the Wonderland Trail in those days. There was a shelter cabin not far from the rangers cabin and we would set our tent up in the lee of some trees, in the evening, we would just stand up turn around and watch amazing colours settle over the mountain...and, an added bonus, we could hear the rumbling of rocks coming off the glacier into Tahoma Creek...it was frigging amazing.

What if you concerned that your car can’t make it to the trailhead? I have a super old car and would love if you made a video about getting to the trailhead
@TheHungryHiker2 күн бұрын
@@sarahsprinkle1_169 Great idea for a video! For right now (since I don't have a video currently on this topic) I'll start by saying that transportation opportunities to any given trailhead are going to vary depending on where you are and where you're trying to go. Some popular trails might have public transportation options that will take you to and from the trailhead. There could be rideshare opportunities in the area like cabs, Lyft or Uber or shuttle services. You could carpool with other hikers. You could reach out to Trail Angels in the area who offer rides for hikers to and from trailheads. You could rent a car (I do this often when I'm traveling out of state for a backpacking trip). You could even join a hiking group in your area and carpool with other hikers in the group to the trailhead. From my personal experience, anytime I've thru-hiked or section hiked a long-distance trail, I've had to utilize some sort of public transportation system in order to get me to a starting trailhead or get back into town from an ending trailhead. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Freeze dryers cost about 10k here in New Zealand :(
@TheHungryHiker2 күн бұрын
Freeze dryers aren't too terribly cheap here in the United States either, but worth the investment if you plan on making a lot of your own backpacking food and want to extend the life of your leftovers instead of throwing them out. Lots of different models and price points out there to choose from.

Im 20 seconds in, and you said food motivated hiker😂. I never thought of this term, but i resemble that comment 😂. You inspired me to make a list of my hiking motivations. Food is the cherry on top of lots of good reasons to get out. I definitely think long and hard about what I want to make a meal good.
@TheHungryHiker2 күн бұрын
So happy that this video helped inspire you to make a list of all your hiking motivations. Knowing your "Why" is super important, especially on those hard days when you're out on trail, questioning why you're out there in the first place. Good food is a big motivator for me. I'll hike in any terrain and any amount of miles in a day, knowing that I have a yummy backpacking meal waiting for me in my food bag. Good luck!

My girlfriend broke her ankle on the AT a couple years ago. We were first time hikers and were relying on the guy leading our party to know what to do, but quickly realized he didn’t. We were very fortunate that some seasoned hikers happened along and helped us get out of there. She had to hike out 6 miles, but those guys carried our packs and we had poles she was able to use as crutches. Our mistake was not taking responsibility for our own safety. So glad it wasn’t a more serious accident!

Do the pouch linings give off toxins when you add boiling water to rehydrate your freeze dried food?
@TheHungryHiker9 күн бұрын
No, when used correctly, most food-grade mylar bags do not release toxins when boiling water is added, as they are designed to be safe for food storage and can withstand high temperatures; however, it's important to check the specific manufacturer's instructions and ensure the bag is labeled as food-grade to be certain.

If you add sesame oil, garlic powder, ginger powder, and sesame seeds to the pad thai noodles, you'll have a slightly different flavor. Yes, funny point about not only overcoming your own fears but also dealing with the fears of the friends and family who aren’t even going! When we were on AT my wife’s back home friends were all a titter about the once in decades murder that happened (knife attack, woman survived, man killed). The same people who were so alarmed by news of the murder 100 miles from us were oblivious that there had already been 3 murders that month with in 12 miles of their own homes! In recent years I’ve become intrigued and perplexed by how irrational people are about the fears they prioritize. Really noticed it during pandemic. People who so fear a 1:10,000 chance of a violent attack are inspired to wear an expensive, 2 pound firearm. Many of those same people considered an inexpensive, 2 ounce mask too cumbersome of a protection for a threat that was on its way to killing a million people in our country.

I learned that if you really want to learn what people are afraid of, tell them that you're going on a thru-hike for five months by yourself.
