Hey Thomas and subscribers. I have a personal story. I will make a long story as short as possible, so bare with me. I think this story will highlight that if you don't train something or have trained it in the past, you will not use it . Before I start, I took JKD concepts for 6 months and did a little boxing with a friend. My father also showed me some moves when I was younger. He trained in 3 martial arts. One of them showed him pressure points. This past Tuesday, I was waiting for my sister and her kids outside of a restaurant, I was on the corner. I noticed people looking at the opposite direction that I was facing. I turned around and saw 4 seniors trying to help another senior that was being choked out by a young guy. The young guy looked liked he was in his mid 20. Btw people that were looking were guys that were bigger and younger than me and didn;t help. Anyways I ran to help. I told the young guy to let go. He didn't. I tried to pull his arm but he was very strong. So I used a pressure point tech on his forearms. He let go and I grabbed that arm and pined it to the floor with my Knee. He was still holing on to the old man with the other arm. I told him if he doesn't let go I would hit him. He looked at me and he didn't. I punched him 3 times. That got him to release. The old guy got up and I confronted the guy. Lucky he didn't want any of it. Bc he probably would have killed me. 1) I think he was high 2) I look like I am in my mid 30's but I am 49yo 3) I am on meds for back pain so I am kinda weak. But He saw that I was yelling bring it. Bc he got me pissed that he would attack seniors. All the guys looked like they were in their late 70's. I stayed till the guy left. The cops came last as usual. After I got home I got to thinking. To get this guy off the senior citizen, it might have taken me a minute or longer. If I would have gone for the eyes I would have been done in a sec. Or when I asked him to let the oldman go and he looked at me I could have just done a finger flick to the eyes. Or when I first got there I could have put my foot on his head or stomp his head. All of these would have done the job in 2 or 3 seconds.

@@ThomasMarxJKD That's a good question Thomas. When I arrived at the scene I was just interested in getting the old man out of the choke hold. But when I got home, I got to thinking that while I was trying to get him off, this idiot could have killed old man. Me being nice could have cost the old man his life. Also I thought to myself that I should have inflected alot of damage bc how dare a young kid attack an old man. No respect. I live in NYC and sadly these things are happening more frequently. Sadly in NYC this is not weird at all. Btw, Before hitting the guy I did tell to please don't make me hit him. Please release the old man. I almost begged him. So this encounter might have lasted longer that I originally thought.

Speaking of the long hook, how do you practice long hooks in JKD ? In boxing i was told to do a very awkward bending of the wrist so the fist could land with 2 big knuckles but the moment i take the gloves out, it's a terrible structure and 100% would lead to injuries

Long lead hook has the same footwork as the straight lead. Its not about the how you hold your fist, its about the footwork.

So basically you threw it the same way as close range hook but with the support from footwork to close the gaps before throwing the punch, that's great. Sounds way better than boxing now days keep teaching people to swing from long range without any footwork when that only works with boxing gloves

@@jaketheasianguy3307 Yes, sometimes you can extend the arm though and bend in a little bit the fist. Thats also possible.

Following JKD religiously is exactly what BL didn’t want ppl to do. He explicitly warned ppl against blindly following styles religiously. He was hesitant about writing the Tao of JKD bc he didn’t want ppl to take it as the gospel truth of martial arts. He said the individual is more important than styles. absorb the useful stuff from JKD, discard what doesn’t work for you, and add what’s your own.

The reason he didn't do a jkd book yet, remember he died at 32, was because he didn't want people to open schools unqualified based on the book. He did make over 2000 pictures for it though. Its stated by Linda Lee in the fighting method books. According to the latest printing, in 1973 he started to look over the pictures again. Common hear say misinformation you share here.

@@ThomasMarxJKD I doubt the fact that he didn’t want people to follow JKD religiously is misinformation. He has emphasized the importance of not being dogmatic over and over when he was alive. Also, pls note that I never said he decided to NOT publish the book. I simply said he was hesitant meaning he was concerned that people might misinterpret the book.

@@ThomasMarxJKD Most of the statements you listed above are things I’ve never said. In regard to “don’t follow JKD religiously”. I mean yeah. It’s literally what Bruce himself emphasized over and over when he was alive. If you do not agree with that statement, it means you disagree with Bruce which is fine. But please try not to make it sound like Bruce wanted ppl to be dogmatic about JKD bc that’s obviously not what he wanted.
