Many thanks to you Janis! After leaving the grooming salon horribly disappointed for the second time in a row (paid a lot for a bath and face trim when a complete grooming should have been done) I googled for how-to videos and found you. After I googled you I found the Nash Academy in Lexington, KY and lead instructor Melinda Owlsley. Melinda is now Auntie Melinda to our Cockers Knightley and Clementine which we try to keep in a long puppy cut on the way to a modified show cut. Melinda is super patient with Clementine's post-spay coat and bot doggies love her and so do I. I could never learn how to do this so I am thankful that watching your video led me to Melinda. Thank you so much! And for all you critics out there, in case you didn't know, Janis is an international level judge of grooming, so she does know what she's doing!!!

Okay obviously you know nothing about grooming. A 'puppy cut' is not an actual cut. And a cocker would never get what most people consider a 'puppy cut' anyway. You talk crap about the grooming salon you went to...when you should have explained what you wanted to your groomer. If you ask for a full groom, you'll get one. Most groomers automatically assume our clients WANT a full groom when they have a cocker. So you must have not given your groomer enough information if the only cut the hair on the head and gave your dog a bath. Stop blaming the salon, and start taking responsibility for your actions. Clients like you are hell.

Wow, Thank you so much for the education about clipping dogs. I'm a groomer in London and I always tell my clients the benefits of not clipping...apart from changing the coat and texture and colour, I didn't know melanomas were prevalent in dogs these days. I love your scissor techniques, I prefer to scissor but the job takes longer.

I have a cocker. though I prefer to do her myself, I was laughing. My lily gives me that exact same look when I'm doing her 😄 face. And I give her lots of breaks & treats, not like the groomer in the demonstration. That wide eyed, "O mother, please, how could you torture me?" is a typical cocker expression. the cocker head bow, I learned, is also infamous...turning head down and away, and they're quite stubborn to cooperate. I've had to learn to do her head quickly, and she's going to pull away, and I've got to take control, with no drama. It's what she's doing here. Again, my baby is a major drama queen too, and I'm mommy, but I also have the time to take longer with her face, head, and give her breaks, because I don't have a line of dogs waiting....I just wanted to add my two cents for those who are critical.

For full coat, every 2 weeks. Maybe three of your groomer deems the dog to be brushed out enough at home in between biweekly appointments.... It would depend on how well you maintain the coat. Generally tho, two weeks because people get busy and forget to brush.

I need a groomer whose gentle. the clipping around the eyes and mouth was anything but. I don't believe the dog should fear grooming if it's been done in gentle manner each time. hard to find good groomers.
@Flippityfloop44
@Flippityfloop44 7 жыл бұрын
pauline marizette what are you talking about? When you're doing a dogs face you have to hold it to keep them still. Also when you're shaving lips it's crucial to pull them tight so they don't catch between the teeth of the clippers blade. Stretching a dogs face like that may be slightly uncomfortable, but the alternative is an increased risk of cutting the dog.
@mommabingz8455
@mommabingz8455 6 жыл бұрын
It is crucial to remove the lip hair especially on a saggy mouth breed. Leaving that hair will cause tooth decay and these types of breeds can also get sores caused by yeast and bacteria. So which do you prefer a clean shaved lip line or your dogs mouth being sore and tooth decay caused by something that could be prevented? And, the reason why ppl can’t find a good groomer is because y’all want us groomers to get it done in an hour! That leads to an overly stressed dog and groomer! Y’all need to understand grooming a dog is a whole lot different than you getting your hair done. That is the madness that needs to stop!

Holding a dog and manipulating the skin is part of keeping the dog safe, loose skin gets caught in clipper teeth and a moving dog is a hazard, by hold the dog still you also can feel imediately the second a dog decides to move and you can react before it actually does. That dog is not afraid, it might be mildly annoyed at best. And grooming starts out scary for literally every dog as a puppy they have to get used to it. Just like children that are afraid of getting their own haircut, or flushing toilets, or the drs office. And finally it is 100% possible to be both firm and gentle, she is not hurting the dog by holding it.

It's funny, I'm too gentle and it takes me forever to groom because of that. Oh well, I enjoy the dogs I'm working on when I can take my time. But some holds and maneuvers look rougher than they are, because we're trying to hold them in the safest manner while shaving / scissoring. Trust me, if the dog is uncomfortable or upset, they WILL let you know. They struggle or bite, they don't accept things that are bothering them. Of something is painful, they will let you know, and then the groomer will find a way to work around it.

@Kyliefer
@Kyliefer 5 жыл бұрын
I’m in schooling for dog grooming right now and I’m learning that there’s a huge difference between being gentle, being firm, and being mean. When I started I was like “all my instructors are so MEAN. They just brush so vigorously and shake the dogs leg and just do mean things. But as I’ve been going on I’ve learned that they’re not brushing vigorously it just looks like that cause they have to pull the brush away from the dog and back into the hair to work tangles out without pulling, and they shake the dogs leg while they’re holding it because the dog is struggling and they’re showing the dog that it doesn’t hurt and to train them that the groomer is the one in charge not the dog. If you aren’t firm with the dog there’s a higher risk of it fighting you and getting hurt. Also if you don’t pull the skin tight there’s a chance of the skin getting caught between the clippers. It may look mean but as a very empathetic, animal loving person I promise most groomers care for their dogs as if they were their own and are being as gentle as they can be with them without letting the dog have control
