She is not aggressive, she is anxious. If you're a groomer, you have to know the difference between the two. If you pay attention, she actually calms down when you speak in a soft voice and speak to her directly and are gentle with her, going at her pace, not yours. She picks up on your voice/tone and becomes agitated when you speak loudly to your audience, are out of tune with her and not as gentle as you could be. You can't do that while grooming. You have to be in tune with the animal and put them at ease and go at their pace. That's your priority. You just have to feel it from the dog's perspective and genuinely want to relax them.
@jn9297
@jn9297 6 жыл бұрын
No always. Anxiety is the main problem here. This dog uses "aggression" as her last resort when crying and begging doesn't help. She is not constantly aggressive. When she is put on the table, her reaction is anxiety and she is agitated to get off. This type of dog will also be anxious to go for a walk, anxious to lick someone's face, anxious to get off leash and run etc. She won't be showing aggression as her main response. I am sure you've seen truly aggressive animals and you know what I mean. They freak out even when you're calm and gentle. This dog responds to calm/gentle. She is simply anxious.

I should have just "liked" your comment before I wrote a super long comment, myself, lol. I totally agree with you. She's not doing the dog any favors with her energy, nor muzzling her right away. And the way she's chopping at the dog's hair with those clippers is almost frightening. She just said she's "hyped up," and "freaking out in my mind." The dog is DEFINITELY picking up on that, and it's not ok. Even the way the guy is holding that dog...what would she have done if she was alone? I never had anyone to wrangle dogs for me. I had to figure it out on my own. Holding them tightly is also going to heighten their anxiety. I dunno...I was expecting something very different when I started watching this video. I'm monumentally disappointed.

JN amen! There is a difference and it’s huge. An anxious dog can be taught not to be if you are patient, work with them gently and show them lots of love and the best part, they get better. It may take longe the first couple times but eventually they become awesome dogs on your table! I’ve worked with serious buyers, especially on nails, after 3-5 grooms no need to muzzle at all. Part of grooming is training and the best training for grooming is trust building. When you just slap on a muzzle and get it done as quick as you can furthers their anxiety and they become worse. I wish groomers had better training in dog behavior, it would help so many dogs and groomers. It’s our responsibility to make the grooming experience a good one.

AMEN! Literally my thoughts while watching. I was uncomfortable the whole time. Seeing her blame the dog and label her as aggressive, because she's very clearly not. Her increased breathing, body language and cries showed signs of a distressed and anxious dog. The WORST thing you can do is speak loudly and make quick movements. She's in a new place, without her owner, and some strange women is coming at her with a loud clippers, loud voice and camera pointed in her face. :/ I've worked with dogs all my life, so seeing this was disappointing.

kayBTR, then that is a good opportunity for the dog to figure it out. I do think her demeanor isn't very helpful . My cats always act so good at my vets because they are just firm and calm. I have asked why they aren't so good for me and they say because they aren't afraid of me, guess that's good.

There are better ways to teach a dog to accept grooming. This is scaring the dog and setting her up to be even more fearful and reactive in the future. It's not the groomer's job to work with her on this issue but her owners need to work on this issue or it's just going to get worse.

I was an instructor at a dog grooming school for years and we had hands-on for all types of dogs. That dog in the video is NOT mean - merely stressed and probably has an anxiety disorder, perhaps aggravated by previous grooming experiences. The vet who has primary care of the dog can prescribe an oral muscle relaxer or anti-anxiety medication to be given by the owners just before bringing the dog in. I would expect this groomer to be more concentrated on the dog and closer to the dog's body, holding it steady with one hand while using the clippers. A 2nd person can give narration, but a groomer's attention needs to be on the dog, period. A soft, soothing voice, and slow talking during the clipping can help quiet an anxious dog - also, I always would let the dog sniff and see the clippers before beginning, and let them listen to the sound - I never want the nervous dog to be startled or feel they have no input into the process - their cooperation is the #1 item needed. If it's possible, holding the dog to your chest occasionally while grooming can be reassuring - dogs respond to touch, and some get more anxious as they are left "alone" on a table. Hands on, soothing voice, body contact and PRAISE when they've done something difficult for them. And if the #7 blade doesn't work, try an #8 1/2 - wonderful for an in-between length on a curly coated dog.

I have a dog that has been matted and I didn’t even realize it or that it pulls in their skin. I could feel your anxiety and fear as well and I don’t blame you. I don’t think it helped to be talking to the camera instead of her. Like others have said she seemed relieved once the mats were of her legs especially. Great job. Maybe the dog could come and visit in a week just for some cuddling and a touch up. PAM

She doesn't seem aggressive she seems terrified. Like you said, she probably had a traumatic experience with a groomer in the past. It's a learned behavior; the memories of previous experiences are clouding her judgement. I can't imagine the number her old groomer did on her for her to be this scared. I'm glad there are groomers like you out there Dede to help reshape the grooming experience for scared dogs!

@Room-xi6nb
@Room-xi6nb 6 жыл бұрын
Glitter Squeak Going to the vet and a dog getting groomed are just not comparable situations. Restraint at the vet is sometimes completely necessary! Grooming, not so much. If you need to restrain a dog THAT much, while grooming, you're doing it wrong. A dog usually fears going to the vet, they shouldn't be that fearful at the groomers. When going to the vet, chances are the dog is going to feel some sort of pain, even if it's just getting vaccinations, or a thermometer up its behind. Not pleasant things. A vet clinic even smells different, thus heightening a dog's fear. Going to the groomers should be pain-free, stress free, and VERY different from a vet visit. There should be no reason to restrain or even muzzle a dog, at the groomer's. A lot of us work alone, and having another person there to do this is often not even an option. We have to find ways to prevent it from EVER being an option, or we'd be totally screwed.

I have never suggested sedation, I did suggest anti anxiety meds for the one dog, the 1 year old yorkie, as part of the rehabilitation. This dog is Anxious, all that high pitched whining is anxiety, and then if she does not get to calm down then it explodes into panic. So, this is panic attacks, the spinning and freaking out. There is a huge difference in Anxiety meds vs heavy sedation, and sometimes it is kinder for the dog. I know you say "it's too hard on them to take meds once a month for a groom", but you know... these grooms are hard on them TOO. Hearts pounding, fear, panic, adrenal flooded nightmare.. so while I agree meds are not great, some of these dogs are far worse off over the panic of the groom. My point is, that some medication to allow the dog to LEARN that the groom is not going to hurt can be helpful. A dog can not learn to be calm during the groom when they are hyped up like this, the two are mutually exclusive. And just so you know, people do take xanax to go to the dentist, or do MRI's/Cat scans etc. Anxiety is miserable and dangerous. As a person with PTSD you know this, and basically many of these dogs have PTSD from bad grooms at other places. You admit that you were stressed and gritting your teeth and that David was pissed the whole time.. and the dog feels that and stresses more. They don't know why you are scared, they just know you are scared. Dogs learn to take cues from humans, so your feelings affect the dog.

Livinnpjs I have used Rescue Remedy. An herbal remedy just a few drops on the inside ear flap ( not near the ear canal). I've also known people who use it for dogs who are afraid of thunder, fireworks, and car rides. Also, sometimes covering their ears help, while grooming. It's just a cloth that loosely covers their ears and goes around their head. A lot of dogs are terrified of the noise of the clippers, or dryers. For some, it really helps.

I can see how that dog is panicking, panting and watching her whole body whilst she breaths. It is so distressing to me and I'm not even in the room. She is clearly crying through being terrified. If she had have become mean it would have been due to how she had no reassurance or calming surroundings. I don't believe the dog is being shown care or concern in any way, I understand there is a job to do, a huge part of an animal caring job is to 'care' for the animal. You could stroke her, talk to her calmly, friendly, reassuringly, this would help both her and you tremendously

I can almost guarantee she was turned away on aggression. I worked at petsmart and we were told to not tell owners if their dog was aggressive, just let the owner know it was a bad day for the dog. But, at petsmart, you're not allowed to put a muzzle on a bichon. If they had been able to muzzle her, they may have been able to complete services, but corporate and all that. Poor dog. Regular brushing could've helped her a lot.

It’s all in the timing you have to start grooming them at an early age and I’d recommend using a groomer that you can sit and watch so your pet is comforted by you being there. That pup is nervous not mean that baby is afraid in time she will be fine patience is the key for her. You are a patient and amazing groomer. I need to order those face scissors.

@Room-xi6nb 6 жыл бұрын
Ann Morris Groomers Helpers are awful, inconvenient, and restricting. The dog needs to be trained to behave. If you need THAT much help when grooming a dog, you need more experience, training, and you need to develop a way to groom so you never need one. They didn't even exist when I started, LoL.

Your Using the wrong muzzle. The type your using restricts the breathing if used over a period of around 10 minutes. The type you should use is the basket type as it still allows for mouth to open to pant so you should be using that type for long periods of time. Ps if the dog can still open it's mouth then it too big or loose pps it's just what I've been taught

With extreme anxiety come bite history. So, if anyone says she's not aggressive, she is. I would suggest using something like the groomer helper. I didn't buy one but I use a loop twisted on the lower part of the arm. Also, for my extreme aggressive dogs I use a cone to complete the body and use an extra arm to loop the back side. That way if they get out of the neck loop they are still linked to the loop around their lower body.. And it helps from them twisting. Anything to help keep their mouths away from your hand. Us groomer need our hands.

Yeah, and your dog was just fine till you got to her legs, as a groomer you should know that alot dogs freak out once they get to the legs, stop bad mouthing other groomers for being responsible, that dog should have been sedated, and you fucking know it! That dog is scared. LICKING HER LIPS MEANS SHE IS SCARED - ANXIETY. I do not think she is a mean dog. I do think she would be better served by not having to sit there and wait through your introduction, also think she would do better if she was loved on and petted and talked to in a softer soothing voice. I don't agree with casting this poor baby as mean. THAT DOG IS PICKING UP YOUR ANXIETY! OMG poor baby :(

Why don't owners desensitize their dogs/cats to being handed all over at home - especially if your pet will need to go to a groomer? It's super easy if you've had the pet since puppy/kitten-hood. It's still possible if you adopt an older pet, it just may take more time and patience. I understand almost all pets will act differently away from their home/owner, but every little bit helps the groomer not to have to fight with your pet and puts the pet more at ease as it knows what to expect. Please also find the best groomer in your area (go to dog parks and see which dogs look sharp then find out who they go to, go to privately owned pet stores and ask, ask people you see in your neighborhood, etc.. Don't depend on reviews online, most are written by the owners, their family and friends. Taking a pet to a big chain pet store for anything other than a bath (I personally wouldn't even let them bathe my pets) can turn into a disaster. Any decent groomer would not be willing to work for what the big chain pet stores pay, hence the reason their groomers are inexperienced or just plain suck. It's akin to a asking for a complicated hair cut or color from Sam's in Walmart. P. S. I was a licensed cosmetologist, which isn't too different from pet grooming. Even though I completed my hours and passed the state boards, I literally knew NOTHING when I left school and started working. Believe me, it was a rude awakening! Thus, unless you want to apprentice at an upscale salon for a at least a year sweeping hair, washing heads, shadowing senior stylists and can afford working for tips before ever picking up your scissors, you're stuck working at a crumby salon. The only places that will hire you right out of school are chain salons (who will butcher anyone who has fine/thin hair or cowlicks and don't get me started on their horrible color jobs!) or crappy salons. * Off topic but just a note to people looking for good/great hairdressers - a hairdresser who plays around with your hair before washing and asks questions for at least 5-10 minutes is a stylist you want to go to. They do this to get a feel for everything from texture, cowlicks to which way your hair naturally wants to lie. Any hair cutter (because they're clearly not stylists) who washes your hair before running their hands through it dry for at least 5 minutes is completely inexperienced and has no clue what they're doing - run, don't walk away!

You did an amazing job! I think the next round with her will be better because it seems as though you've established a bit of trust with her even though she does not like it. A dog like this needs to have only one groomer regularly. Even I have never ever trusted just anyone cutting my hair. My longest relationship with a hairstylist was 16 yrs. Here is a very stressed out pooch who struggles each time she is groomed so it's essential the owners stick with one and I think you are very good for this dog. Hopefully it gets easier each time.

My dog usually loves the groomer but it was the 2nd incident with nails. The first time I used clear nail polish so the dog could walk on the uncarpeted. The next time I didn't notice how badly he was hurt. He bit my child required stiches. I know the groomer loves my dog & now I just groom him @ home. The clippers were buy one get one free so I don't have to worry about the whole hot clippers. He still loves a bath, and I am patient & know he's sensitive about his nails. I get my hubby to clip them w/whatever wireclippers or something. I will only let them be clipped if the dog is tolerating it well. Sometimes it's only1 or 2 nails at one sitting.

People don’t realize when grooming a dog how much work and love goes into taking care and grooming of YOUR dog! If people cannot groom or take care of their dog, they should not have a dog. There should be a law to take away dogs from bad owners. Thank you to My favorite groomer for having such patience with not only the dog but with it’s owners. I know I wouldn’t have patience with the owners.

Ugh this breaks my heart for this poor baby, I am so tired of seeing people get these high maintenance dog's just because they are cute, but put forth little to even no effort in doing something as simple as a brushing. This only stresses out the poor dog and the groomer, but I guess its just easy for the owner since in the end they are not the ones that just have to "deal with it." Simple grooming should be something every dog no matter what coat, or breed should experience from a very young age. Its not hard people to brush your dog daily, and massage their feet from a young age to get them use to getting their nails trimmed.

Music Games Animals always have a reason to their actions they're not just mean. Animals don't know mortality and what's right or wrong. If a dog is "mean" they might be scared like this one or just showing dominance since they are herd (or pack) animals. That's not being mean that's just how they do.

This was hard to watch. Is this dog “aggressive” or in pain? I’m going to be super judgmental and say shame on the owners for not brushing her properly or at least getting her groomed regularly enough that she won’t get matted. Proper maintenance would make grooming less painful and traumatic. If the dog has (untreated) joint and arthritis pain, on top of matting yanking her skin, it’s not her fault she’s difficult. They are lucky to have found a knowledgeable, experienced and patient groomer willing to be creative and do some troubleshooting. I hope the owners appreciate the clean slate you’ve given them and they step up.

Michelle Kucera its non of the above, they are just more sensitive, the dog wasn't treated bad the owners probably didn't want to do anything wrong with a dog so sensitive to grooming and the loud noises from the razor doesn't hell at all since they get scared of it. These dogs get scared easily and will flip out if they think they are gonna get hurt. They just need more time to get used to grooming.

I just don't think she's used to it. We had a Lhasa while I was growing up and we'd get him groomed every four weeks on schedule but I took it upon myself while growing up to make sure that if he happened to get wet to blow him dry and keep up on his hair with regular brushing so mats rarely formed. Maxi was a cool customer overall though, really big for a purebread Lhasa, you'd almost mistake him for a slightly undersized Tibetan terrier. I miss him to this day.

Michelle Kucera I have the same issue with my dog (he's a Silky). We rescued him last year, he was super matted. We first took him to a PetSmart and they couldn't do anything because he got aggressive, now we've been taking him every 6-8 weeks to a groomer. But we still have trouble with brushing him specially his legs and head. He hates it so much that at the sight of the brush he starts to show teeth. He goes to the groomer with his legs and head slightly matted. The body he doesn't mind so I start there but the rest is an issue. My dog is a sweet and good dog is just grooming... I wonder what the previous owner did... or didn't do.

PSA to dog owners! Brush your dogs! I know it can be difficult and they might refuse it but you just have to do a little every day! Trust me I know! I have an autistic brother he will flinch and put his arms up if I pat him on the back but it’s about daily desensitization-finding the right moment to give him a good pat on the back, and him not freak out or at least freak out a little less😅
