Your compassion and kindness toward the dog is amazing and refreshing. Some other KZbin groomers have too much of an aggressive attitude. Thanks for posting and being patient.

I am wondering... Would it help to take "good boy treat breaks," so as not to "rush" the groom? Just a thought. I know you take short breaks from sections, but how about breaks from the handling, the clipper noise, the brushing, and give small treats and soothing massage with soothing background music? I'm not a groomer (yet) but just trying to observe and learn from the best groomer EVER. I'm sure you learn from your viewers, too, 🤗❤️

First I want to say that I'm impressed with how calm and loving you are to Henry. Next, I hate how groomers always assume that the owners are neglectful, if they were truly neglectful, he wouldn't be at a groomer. I've watched over 100 videos trying to get tips on what to do with my dog because he is terrified and almost "aggressive" over grooming. We didn't get our baby until 8 weeks, then had to get all of his shots before getting him into a groomer, and had to wait over a month for an opening. He hates and hated then being brushed, clipped etc. He came back shaking but she had to do a full cut on the first go. Ok..second time, he now hated baths and would shake for hours after, though he loved baths before. 3rd he came back with a busted blood vessel in his eye and she told me he peed on the table and how horrible he is. Now I can brush his back but still struggle with his chest and he runs from even seeing grooming scissors. I cant get a razor near him, if i turn it on in the same room he runs and when he sees it he tries everything to get away. So maybe the owners aren't neglectful. Maybe they have a difficult dog and the groomer made it worse so they tried to do it at home and needed help. And yes, if all groomers were patient like you I think dogs would be so much better off.

As a 27 year grooming professional and grooming instructor I agree fully with her assessment of this dog and her comments regarding neglect. Terriers are often very sensitive. Many owners stop doing something if their dog doesn't like it, like brushing and combing. With an overly sensitive pet they need to be brushed more, not less. Gentle consistency is key. More often than not the owners are responsible for the temperament and attitude of their pets due to lack of training of the pet and the owner.

That poor dog is very neglected. If you let your dog get in that bad of shape you have a problem. The only way a dog should look like that is if he's living on the street. I'm not a professional. Just a doodle owner. I hope you give this little guy a chance if they are good owners and bring him back timely. He might not be so bad without the matting.

I agree. I groom and I’ve had dogs the owner tells me they got traumatized with last groomer. I’m super patient and try to make the experience good for them. It takes time, and probably helps to keep same groomer if possible.

I had a similar problem with my Brussel's Griffon. He has been a fearful little guy from the start since 8 weeks old. I've spent hours and hours training him and desensitizing. Naturally, the groomer is an absolute nightmare for him. Every time I've taken him there, he's come back behaviorally worse than before, and sometimes they aren't even able to finish the entire cut. Rather than just ignore it, I bought clippers and scissors and a grooming tie and tried grooming him myself for 8 months. Sure enough, he's extremely defensive and will lunge at the clippers and scramble to get away. No amount of treats (even baked him a steak!) convinces him it is safe. I'm so slow and careful, I can only groom about 3/4 of him at a time before he's had enough. Probably because it takes 3-4 hours. And I'm scared to nick him, so some spots I try to scissor, but he's equally scared of scissors. My cuts look mediocre at best, there is no way I can emulate someone with years of training and experience. Eventually I took him back to the groomer, and this time they ended up injuring his trachea by tying him up tight to prevent him from struggling. He violently coughed and wretched for several days after. He couldn't even bark. I took him to the vet and they just said to monitor him; he did clear up. That was the last straw. I have no choice but to clip him on my own at this point and keep working with his fears. "More often than not the owners are responsible for the temperament and attitude of their pets due to lack of training of the pet and the owner." I don't think this is a 100% fair assessment. His half sister is an absolute superstar and I've done nothing differently with her. Same dad, different mom's. She generally has a better temperament in all respects. While she doesn't love the groomer, she does fabulous with them. I can groom her half decently and she never tries fighting, that is just not her nature. While there are some terrible owners out there, difficult cases like her brother should not be lumped into crappy ownership category. I used to think that way, until I got "that" dog. (What a good karma lesson for me!) People aren't responsible for the temperament and attitude of the dog, they are only responsible for making an attempt to fix the problems, and even then, you can see how darn difficult it can be. I've put in way more effort than most dog owners ever would and he's still challenging all my training skills. I haven't given up yet, but at some point people will give up because they have no clue how to fix it and don't want to spend hundreds on a trainer and grooming tools, just for a groom.

I give all groomers so much credit, love and admiration! Since the pandemic shutdown started my dog was one week away from his 8 week grooming appointment when the groomer had to close down. I have always loved my groomer and my toy poodle does as well. Loves to visit her and we never have any problems. I do at home what I can. I pluck his ears and bath and brush him. Well, I had to do something before he started matting up. I have at home an old Wahl clipper that I used on my Cairn Terrier and Bison because of a bad experience with a very bad, fatal experience with a groomer and the loss of my first toy poodle. (enough said about that) Anyway, I had to clip my 3 year old toy because who knows when they will let him back to his groomer. I watched these videos to sort of brush up on my grooming skills that were not great to begin with but I could do enough. I'm so glad I did! Your advice got me and my fur baby through it. After 5 hours of clipping, scissoring and taking breaks he is trimmed short enough to wait it out (hopefully not too much sooner) I sent pictures and a text message to his groomer literally in tears for the respect and admiration I have for her and her trade. My fur baby was patient and calm through the whole thing that tells me that I chose the right groomer and feel so much better bringing him to her knowing she is caring for him. He loves going there and it shows with the way he behaved for me with the clippers etc. Just want to thank all groomers out there who take the time to care for out pets. I have a renewed sense of and an abundance of respect, admiration and love for you all! Thank you for posting your videos and know that you are helping pets and pet parents with your calm voice and awesome care!

We had a dog, who loved to be brushed and took baths, he went to a groomer often, but we noticed he had cuts in his ears and the soft spots on his body. He became more affraid every time he went. Until the point he would bite even hearing a clipper. Now we have to do it ourselves, he is still scared but he knows we won't hurt him. It's not always the owner, sometimes its the groomer. I wish everyone was as gentle as you. You can see you love what you do, and take care of the furbabies ❤

Let’s not be too hard on the parents. Sometimes they do put in the effort but the dog is unwilling to cooperate…and most parents don’t want their dog to hate them. I have a ‘New Hope Only’ ( should be ‘Last Hope Only’) rescue from the NYACC. She is a Maltese/ ShihTzu mix. She was found wandering the streets of NYC…matted so badly it was hard to tell that she was a dog. She was labeled ‘fear aggressive’ at the shelter because she absolutely forbid anyone to handle her and had bitten several workers. ( It must have been frightening for her…she is still terrified of the sound of metal clanking). That greatly narrowed her options. After she was taken from the shelter by the rescue, she was tranquillized to shave her down. I have had ShihTzus for many years and have always groomed them myself very successfully…I have all the tools, table, etc. I was close with the rescue who took her and I was asked if I would adopt her. Of course I would. I thought the issues they said she had were being exaggerated. Well…lol…no one had exaggerated anything. She was kind of a little nightmare. ( Devil Dog) I was bitten several times just trying to clean the goopies out of her eyes. It was really dicey the first few weeks…I was ready to throw in the towel..but I didn’t, because I knew what that would mean for her. It took a long time to build up enough trust to do anything to her. It took, literally, years…to get her to a point where I could kind of groom her. I never groom her all in one day. I groom different parts of her on different days…always followed by treats that she only gets when I groom her. She still growls and carries on as if someone is trying to murder her. It’s exhausting. Sometimes…there are parts of her that do not get the proper attention they should. I won’t bring her to a groomer because I KNOW they will be bitten. She is sweet as sugar when you meet her…until you try to groom her..then she morphs into a rabid wolverine. She and I have ‘an arrangement’ and I groom her ( badly, lol) as best I can. I was very sick for a few months and did not have the strength to groom her ( I could groom my other dog…who I’ve had since she was a puppy…so she is trained to be groomed and it is effortless…but this one is really difficult). She did get mats and I was torn with guilt over it…but it just had to wait until I was up to it…because she is no walk in the park…and I do not want her to bite anyone else. Sometimes dogs come with baggage that we know nothing about. I’ll never know what happened to her before she came to me…I can only imagine. She is a happy girl now…but she will never look like a ‘show dog’. Her picture is my profile pic.💖

I had a groomer tell me she wouldn’t be able to do a full groom on my puppy because of her age. I’ve worked diligently desensitizing her to touch. It’s so important for owners to do this not just for grooming but for vet visits. She’s still a puppy and I get many compliments from the groomer and vet. I’m so thankful I’ve taken the time to do this with her. I’ll pray for Henry to have a safe/healthy home.

Great job Amy for what you could get done! I also spend time at the beginning of the groom getting to know the dog first. I am a one on one home based groomer. It helps so much more as a bond begins to form. It is so hard when clients come to you with matted dogs and excuses about brushing at home etc. My matted clients are now on a 6-8 weekly scheduled groom, or I won't groom their dogs. I'm only new to grooming (9 months) and I love it, but I have learned very quickly that I can't help everyone. This was a hard lesson for me to learn too, as I wear my heart on my sleeve. Have referred 2 clients to the vets for sedation grooms, so far, as dogs were totally ungroomable to the point of being unsafe. It all comes down to duty of care, doesn't it?? You have such a huge heart and I love your entire grooming philosophy. Much love from Australia xxx

I just find your videos so sweet and love your tricks and techniques. I have a little maltipoo that is just as afraid as Henry maybe even worse. I have taken her to multiple groomers and they have rejected her now. Since she was a puppy we have done regular brushing and grooming but she hates it specially her feet. I was taking her to a groomer who was not very friendly to me and I noticed my dog was not getting better. when my dog saw her come out she soiled herself in terror. That's when I realized where her trauma came from. I don't know what my pup went thru but now I do the grooming myself by watching your videos in hopes that she can forget one day. I wish that there were more groomers like you who genuinely care for the pups Thank you for your videos. ❤

Just wanted to say I feel your pain. I get a lot of matted dogs like this and it is mentally and physically exhausting. I never get mad at the dog, take lots of breaks, give lots of hugs and reassurance. All I want to do is help the dog and stress them out as little as possible. I always try to educate the owner about how painful and traumatic it is for their pet. Still, some just keep bringing the pet back in the same shape. As much as I want to help the dog, I eventually have to say “no more”. It just breaks my heart.

You are so wonderful with the dog. Your energy is great. I'm a retired teacher who taught children with autism. I have 2 shih tzus. I actually went to grooming school to groom my dogs because I had them groomed once and they seemed so upset when they got home. I have a friend with a carin terrier who no groomer wants to groom. I used my children behavior training with the dog. The dog bites so I got welding gloves and introduced the gloves with treats. Making the gloves a positive thing. It worked. Only when she tries to bite I'm firm and assertive and I wait until she's comfortable and I continue. I groom her fully and she comes out beautiful. She's really happy when it's over and follows me around wagging her tail. Of course it's the owners fault although she's my friend and also a special ed teacher she's not good handling her own dog's behavior. So the first few times I did the dog by myself after the 3rd groom she can stay around and she behaves. When I had the issue with the face. I say no and I don't say anything else and I give her complete eye contact almost a stare. Don't move until she gets herself together and is completely calm. Then I say good girl and continue until she knows you are not going to give up. That was my motto at work (you do it until) sadly children with behaviors react the same way. And I would continue what ever I wanted from them until. Reward any time they are doing the right thing. Just always calm not angry say no stare continue let the dog know you are not going to give up and eventually they will give up and surrender. Once it's over, give kisses, praises and treats and you'll have a happy dog. :)

“Dogs, lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know the pain is coming, you're going to lose a dog, and there's going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can't support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion. There's such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware that it comes with an unbearable price. Maybe loving dogs is a way we do penance for all the other illusions we allow ourselves and the mistakes we make because of those illusions.” ― Dean Koontz, The Darkest Evening of the Year

Thank you for shooting an honest video. I’m not a professionally trained dog groomer by any means. I have my third cocker spaniel and she just had her first birthday. We work at brushing and bathing. She’s getting accustomed to it. I took her to a grooming shop once. I asked for the suburban cut. The groomer was experienced. However, when it was time to pick her up, I asked if she was difficult. The groomer said that she was not well behaved. I figured she would give any groomer a hard time. She flips out in our house if anything is not in its proper place. She barks the second she hears the vacuum, the blender, the electric knife, etc. I just received her very own clipper and combs. My husband has Alzheimer’s and he helps to keep her calm. Tomorrow, I’m going to attempt to give her a pretty haircut. I wonder what ended up happening to Henry. Pour little guy. I love watching your videos and listening to your thorough explanations. Thank you so much.

He have definately been cut by a clipper, he remembers it poor dog. He will never trust a face clip again. Its so sad and you tried so hard to help him. I think owners have tried it and maybe cut his lips? Or mouth area? Well done for your attempt. I think he needs a bit of training by professional along with the owners. Xxxx

I have three havanese young male dog and I make sure I brush them every other day with a dry bath, clip their nails and clean their ears. I clip their hair every month and wash them twice a month along with removing the hair from their ears. I learned the techniques to maintain them from you tube and from your videos (Thank you!!). It can be done. Pet get used to the grooming woth consistency. Why get a pet if you can put in the time to take care of them properly. Poor little dog!

I had told you about my lhasa/yorkie...that she had been injured by a groomer(sliced to eyeball) so she would try to break a leg to get away. I spoke recently when I took my mini schnauzer in, the vet had given Bella, xanax....no one would take her. Vet gave her Gabapentin, same thing, they would not groom any dog on and sedative. She suggested Hemp Calming Support, made of hemp seed, chamomile and magnesium.....Bella can now be groomed!!!!!! I am beyond thrilled, and so is Bella. They carried it in the groomers area.

I have to go through this every time I try to brush my dog, shave my dog, or trim his nails. He used to be well-behaved and confident when he was younger - he's 6 now. He used to go to a professional groomer every 2 months with brushing/bathing at home in between. Then something happened at an appointment that caused him to freak out and become aggressive/fearful and not be able to complete the grooming appointment. It changed his confidence in so many aspects of his life ever since. I've had to groom him at home because I am the only one that has a chance of succeeding. Please don't assume that it could never happen at a professional groomer. Mine did. Although I do believe it was an inexperienced groomer that was filling in for my regular groomer. I don't know if he was accidentally hurt, or if it was just something scary/difficult that happened during the later fear period in his development, but he has never been the same since. I even have to muzzle him at the vet now because he is so scared of anybody touching him. He is the sweetest dog, but his fear is off the charts with grooming.

Amy, "Patience is the companion of wisdom." You have both in abundance. I am not as patient as you are. I would have stopped the grooming and asked the owner to come in to assist in order to show him/her what Henry and you had to go through. That kind of neglect makes my blood boil. It's animal cruelty, even though it may be unintentional. Lacking in diplomacy when I see any kind of abuse, I would have made it clear to the owner that he/she has a moral responsibility to keep Henry groomed and that either he/she make the effort to work with Henry to address his fear or give him up to someone who is willing to do so and give him a happier life. Kudos to you Amy.

I really MUST let you know that watching your video has been like a much needed valium to meeee! Lol! I have been wrenched with anxiety about clipping a rescue dog that I have. I've been procrastinating for probably about a week now because I can't find anybody who has touched on every last crippling fear that my nightmares are made of! I have been very hesitant to clip or try and fix this puppy's problem because I'm a clipper first timer and so is this dog I think! No kidding, I dream about messing up and possibly hurting the dog. I am forever grateful and you're my hero for making this video! I think I have watched 10,000 videos on how to groom your dog but absolutely nobody has picked the right dog to fit my situation. Most of the videos are tutorials on the how to, but sadly I don't think I've seen even one that showed the empathy and love that you did to the dog. It is just as important to do that for him as it is to get the mats off of him. I really appreciate you teaching me how to affectively comfort my pup through this. I usually don't comment on KZbin videos, however...HOLY ANXIETY relief! Lol! I just had to comment on this one. If you ever wonder if what you do makes a difference in people's lives with their pets.... you have made a profound difference in my life, this puppy's life and in my ability to maintain mental stability! Thank you! Oh, also, I'm totally naming this dog HENRY! 🤎

Hi Amy! I have a client with a Std Schnauzer same problem. They never brush or they say they try to get the mats out of the beard. I usually try and brush it and use a mat splitter or the end of my scissors to break up the mat. My guy is bad. But not as bad as Henry. I feel so bad for him. He should have been on the grooming table as soon as possible. We started our schnauzers when they were young to get use to brush, table, scissors , clippers , touching ears , paws, pads. So they are familiar with everything. Sometimes 2 to 3 times a week. Because they had to be OK to strip their coats later. My hats off to you girl. I would have been sweating a river with him. Love you you did good. I would love to have heard what the clients had to say. The sad part is Henry will be like that again. I get so mad at people who want these dogs but can't take the time to brush and take care of them. Not fair to Henry. Why didn't they get a chihuahua.

Thank you for sharing this video and thank you for showing so much compassion for Henry. He must’ve had some very bad experience with the clippers, whether from the owners or from a previous grooming. There are harsh groomers out there, even on KZbin you can see the harsh handling towards the dog on the table. Some of them do get me upset. Henry is a sweetheart, he didn’t try to bite you, he’s just scared. I have a maltipoo. Some time ago, he’s so afraid of the grooming, the minute I arrived at the groomer’s parking lot he started shaking like crazy. One time it was so bad his shaking that the groomer called me to come and get him and I had to take him to the vet to calm him down. Then we realized his neck had very bad bruises. After that I bought a grooming table and all the equipment and tools needed to groom him. I even took an on line grooming training and watched as many grooming videos I can watch. He’s so much better now, he does accept me to groom him but it took many years and lots of love and practice for him to let be groomed. Your tenderness with Henry made me feel so good for Henry. Let’s just pray for a better future for him. Again, thank you for showing us your kindness❤

You did a great job! I know you only stopped because of real fears of cutting him or him hurting you or himself. I only wish he could have taken a nap and give you both a break so you could have finished his face. This last part of the dog struggle against your grooming is how it looks when I have tried at home. (But with your videos I know what I didn’t before thank you!) Thanks for showing a difficult grooming with matted fur and a scared dog being aggressive. The videos on KZbin almost always look like dogs that have been kept up so well they need very little grooming. Very grateful for you! Only wish you could have finished and even said Henry became a regular less nervous client. And if Henry went to a vet to finish I wish he were lucky enough to come back to you and continue his road to emotional recovery and a healthy coat. Of course with his owners being good to brush him daily!

You are an amazing, compassionate woman, and even with that patch of matted fur on his face, he looks 100% better. Could a dog like this just be heavily dosed with a tranquilizer of some sort rather than full anesthesia? Our new puppy is not letting me brush her; she attacks the brush and tries to bite it and me. We have a good groomer who comes to the house, and she will be facing Mia for the first time in a week, and I am concerned for the groomer! Great job, lady! 🙋🏻‍♀️💟

Amy, it is good you are sharing these groomings, too. There is just not always sunshine and shiny furs! I feel very sad for Henry! I often think, that dogs need groom-training just as much and even more as they need "potty-training". You cannot expect a dog that is not used to get groomed or even brushed to tollerarte everything like manipulating his body and fur over the time of over two hours. It cannot be the goal for the groomer "to get the job done". And the owners have to invest over a period of time for "groom-training" so their dog will be able to have a complete groom some time soon in the future. There is mistakes and misunderstanding on both sides. Owners and groomers. The coin always has two sides. Belive me, I have had a "Henry", a bad groomer and than finally some real good grooming videos to watch that showed me a lot about fur and skincare and how to train my own Bella to get used to tools, shampoo and the clipper. Bella for example is very fuzzy and scary with her paws. So at first I always left it to be done at last. So.... I never got them done! So what I do now is, doing the paws first since she is still patient enough. Bingo! And if she gets fuzzy with her left or right ear now.... so what... I finish it up the next day. But her paws are done. Bella hatet the clipper. So... I would put it on her back turn it on and let her feel the vibration first for a couple times untill she would tollerate it. Soon enough I was able to clip her fur. Maby Henry needs some training like that with his head? Dogs like Henry need time and training and positive feedback. Not a bunch of groomers that turn him down. And of cause a owner that works with you in the same direction! Thanks for sharing all your knowlege to us and keep up the great work! Stay well!!!

Thank U for this post. My rescue dog has longhair and in Florida he picks up “hitchhikers” that causes instant matting. I thought about doggie “downers” but I need them as much as he does. This video brings back my PTSD from our grooming sessions and chokes me up. It is horrific because I know he is sooo scared it but he does love it once we are done. Will all the breaks it often takes more then a day. My baby even runs if it go near to where I keep his grooming supplies. I do not want to take him to a groomer for fear they will not take the time he needs for grooming which could make his fear worse. Thank you again for sharing I hope other owners with this problem will watch and learn to be patient with there animals and not just hold them down and push through it. As a ER RN some of the doctors would demand strapping down pediatric patients for sutures etc. rather than explaining everything and doing it at the child’s pace.

My cocker spaniel has been skittish and biting during grooming since puppy stage. He hates his feet below ankle or hock to be touched. 2 months ago he was a wooly mess and groomers refused him. I purchased a 5 in 1 clipper which has very quiet sound. I practiced rubbing the dog all over with the non blade end of the clipper while running. I had favorite treats on hand when he was compliant and not jumping or biting. I did this daily for two weeks, and then I gradually took little swipes with the cutter end, always giving treat when he was accepting. I did not push if he was anxious or biting. I groomed him on the floor, on my leather sofa, in his dog bed, anywhere he tolerated the clipper while it was running over any part of his body I could get to. I had fine spaniel hair everywhere! The vacuum sweeper filled up but I kept trying but only for a few minutes at a time. Then he began to turn over on his back so I could do his underside, all while rubbing his chest and tummy. Wow! The dog was naked almost from my experiments with clipper length 🫢But his face, feet, paw pads could not be handled so the vet anesthetized him and kind of cleaned up his face and paws but not a great job by his tech person. $120 there but I had a clean slate to start over. The vet also prescribed the canine version of Prozac for anxiety and after 6 weeks it seems to be kicking in. The med is not a cure but must be combined with behavior training. Now, just this week I was able to get the clipper from the top of his head down the side of his muzzle on both sides! Amazing! I was thrilled! The dog’s coat is still a little choppy but I am getting better. I took him to a professional groomer this week and together we clipped him using my clipper (low vibration volume) and she showed me how to clip him better and to avoid sensitive areas with close blade. Still he will not allow the feet. We decided that next professional visit I would bathe him the day before and bring him for the cut the next day so that the session is not so long and stressful. She showed me how. She was very complimentary about how far my dog has come in two months. I work with him every day even just pretending to clip. Now the dog will go to the low table I set up on my patio for this purpose and wait for me to bring grooming tools. He waits for me to get the treat bag before getting n the table by himself. He does not like being picked up. So that is my tale. Now I am working on his lower legs, a little at a time, always moving on when he gets agitated. I use Zymox shampoo and conditioner and Zymox Otic for his ears.

You are amazing and so sweet with this little chap. Bless him. What a dreadful state he was in. You did remarkable well with him. I hope the owners take better care of him in the future. Well done you. New subscriber.💕💖

Love the mic drop! Well done on this groom, you're so patient and kind. How are you not fearful of being bitten? I feel like it holds me back as we had a very unpredictable westie that would snap. He was the best boy but could seriously hurt us.

I do it fear small dogs that are frisky, but big dogs, that’s a different challenge.
