I love it how the cattle dogs know when they are beaten. Like when they are on the slippery table at the vets. And the thermometer goes in where no self respecting cattle dogs wants anything to go. I sure miss my old red. He died 16 years ago but I miss him every day.

I know they get such defeated looks when they have to go through all the things they really don't want to lol....They really do take a piece of us when they leave don't they? I said goodbye to two recently one being one of my heelers and I still feel shattered without them and miss them every day. 💙

You have to get another one man.. I had a little blue heeler my neighbor murdered it. Then laughed at me about it.. that b**** just don't know how close she was... To make a long story short I was f******losing it.. one of my friends was like hey cant you get another dog.. I thought about it for a week while I was ranting about the neighbor and terrorizing them with the grinder it 4 in the 5 in the morning... And I found my red. At an animal shelter.

They had been chasing him for over a year. He had been living up in the forest in New Mexico at lake abiquiu.. heavily wooded heavily populated with predators and elk and everything else. He had got into it with some coyotes or wolves or something. But he just could not function in the dog jail. He said he snapped one day and just started attacking every dog and everybody.. because they had been picking on him. He was scheduled to be put down.. I was like f*** that s*** I'm taking that dog right now you're not putting him down. But he's vicious he's completely psychotic.. I said bitch,so am I and I'm taking that dog I don't care what you people say.. finally they were like fu#k u! you crazy bastard just take that crazy dog and leave. Threw it in my truck. As I filled out in reverse I could hear them saying he's going to bite you.. which he did for three months. I've had him for like 4 years travels with me everywhere he loves everybody except for my brother. He still hates coyotes pitbulls and Rottweilers and will attack any dog bigger.. but he's a badass little bastard and my best friend. I still think of Joe see all the time as I'm starting at that f****** b**** next door

I really like to use a flea comb as it does get down to the under coat and also if your dog does by chance have any fleas or tics you may find them in the process. Also love this breed as my Red Heeler simply does not shed hardly at all. Go a week and run a comb through him and only get a few hairs. My Blue mix sheds some because she has Colie in the mix. I like to use a grinder on the nails and they seem to love it a lot over clipping. Got to love this bread!!! Thanks

Don't know how I missed this one...but, YAY! My heeler hates having her paws touched/handled. And, of course her nails need trimming every 2-3 weeks it seems. She also won't let me get a toothbrush anywhere near her mouth. Thx again for this video. I'll look for Sully ' s grooming sessions.

In March he had an ultrasound and the vet shaved him....he's yet to grow completely in; at this point I'm considering shaping it like a heart! But that undercoat is like baby hair. LOL

I also bathe my cattle dog about 3 times a year (especially when she’s blowing her coat) or when she rolls in something really dirty. She loves playing in the water, which helps knock some of the dirt off between washes. They’re really low maintenance dogs as far as their coats go.

My dog came with his vet history. So many visits for dry skin. He had so much dandruff when we would pet him. When he was handed to us his owners told us he had a grooming appointment that week and did we want to keep it. Haha. His fur was so different then it is 9 months later. We didn’t think he was a cattle dog because he had silky fur. Now we do a sniff test. A boar hair brush is a great bath until he smells. Thanks again for a place to talk and listen about land sharks. :)

We just picked up our blue a week ago, and boy what a spitfire she is at 2mos. We have 2 Saints males and they are in their twilight years. Right now we are trying to keep her from just latching on to them all the time. I heard until they are 3yrs you are in what’s called the baby raptor phase. And boy ever. We have chew toys and things, but trying to calm her from beating up my two old guys has been changing sometimes. She has gotten better with them. So, the book we had with the Saints lol has been thrown out and what a difference. The grooming tips are extremely helpful! I think I’m going to make a calendar just for her. We love our little spitfire Ava and are looking forward to grow together and have many happy memories.

Oh, I also watched one of your videos about how you want a farm and lots of chickens. That made me laugh for hours. My wife is the same, and every time we go to a tractor supply store during baby chicken season she turns into a gushy mess. 😂
@TheHeelerMama
@TheHeelerMama 2 жыл бұрын
Tractor supply taunts me with their feathered cuteness and the other farm store! They are literally 2 minutes from my house and within 5 minutes of my house are people with their mini hobby chicken farms and one more minute actual farms. Drives me insane my house isn't zoned for chickens and I have a neighbor I know would get me in trouble if I snuck them in lol. Maybe someday if not I'm okay with it. But yes, cattle dogs have a raptor puppy phase, usually it's 2 years but some do take it all the way to the 3 year mark lol. Very high energy and can be very rude puppies to senior dogs. Sully is starting to bully our senior girl. Thankfully she still tells him off for it but we do have to step in more now. Thank you for watching and I'm sure Ava is going to frustrate and amaze you for many years to come. ❤😉 They are intense but the relationship they have with you is worth all of it.

One of the things that surprised me about my first cattle dog mix was that his coat was more waterproof than the lab mix I had previously! Like coated with carnauba wax! Also surprising to have mostly black nails and pads on mostly white feet! His pads grow so hard, like bristles. I kept putting balm or moisturizer on it but it did nothing. Also the poop perfume... Dead fish is a favorite for them to roll in, since we have a pond. The one that got him banned from the house for a while was the human feces at the park. Be vigilant, they are capable of amazing feats even if they are on a leash!

You put your hand on their lower belly so if they try to sit you just lift them back up. It's what groomers do to keep the dog standing and eventually they just know if I sit she's just going to put me in standing position again. After a few times they pick up on what I expect during a groom. I'm glad the videos are helping. I know many hate the breed and say they are the worst but I think that is mainly people who don't give them what they need and then don't know what to do when behavior issues start. Best dogs in the world IMO obviously lol 😊

4 mo. Zoro Here.. Hey, I think I found another "Tool" in the box to train against Biting (probably my biggest issue so far). He loves to play, but gets carried away and forgets.. When he forgets and gets "Bitey", I put his Tail in his mouth, often making him bite his tail! The look on his face when that happens is truly a learning moment for him. He stops biting me (for a little while anyway)! He's usually at my feet, and I forget he's there sometimes. I stepped on him a couple days ago! He was limping.. I felt Soo Bad.. He was obviously kind of angry with me.. but we made up.. his limp is nearly gone now. I don't know anything about Dingos.. but Zoro clearly has characteristics of a wild animal (Fox maybe?). He fits thru amazingly narrow door openings.. his skeleton is less "Stiff" than a dog.. he's hard to grab. Most feral animals are much smarter.. like wild turkeys are whereas Butterball turkeys will drown in a rain storm or get lost in a fence corner.

I have a 9 week old Texas heeler who is the joy of my life right now, what a sweetie! I've been working with her to get her used to being touched on her ears, paws, mouth, etc and she handles it all quite well. Shortly after she came to me she rolled in yucky so I gave her a bath. Since then she has been scratching up a storm and I don't know if it's from the bath (dry or irritated skin) or if it's from a food change (allergy). Any tricks on being able to tell? This video was great, I will be using your techniques!
@TheHeelerMama
@TheHeelerMama Жыл бұрын
Sometimes if you don't rinse the soap out all the way that can cause some irritation so a quick way would be just to give her a bath with just water and if she improves you got your answer. Also could itch if you are having weather changes. When it comes to the food keep with the same foods and if you give her something different just note the changes. I've even kept a notepad as a mini dog journal sometimes just to help determine the cause.

I adopted a red heeler about a month ago. She had a *really* hard life and I think it profoundly affected her coat. Her patchy thin nearly pure white coat has given way to a beautiful deep red speckle. She's not yet grown out new guard hairs yet. It's going down with time, but she generates a LOT of wax in her coat. When I adopted her I assumed she'd just never been bathed in her life, but it came back a week later, just not rancid or dirty this time. Is that a kind of characteristic of ACDs, or do you think it'll get better as her body fully recovers?
@TheHeelerMama
@TheHeelerMama Жыл бұрын
ACDs coats are not suppose to be waxy. There are a few reasons that could cause this. Lack of proper nutrition, allergies, improper grooming, medical things like fungal infections. If she's had a hard life I would give it a few months and see how her coat goes. If she's cleared for any medical reasons it's most likely just a recovery period. Only one of my ACDs gets a waxy coat once in a while and it's due to her allergies. So Benadryl and extra snacks like fish chews help her with that. My bet would be that she was missing something in her diet and just not properly groomed so now that she's getting that and your seeing improvement that's a step in the right direction. Give her time to heal, and if it's still going on when she's fully recovered look at what might be triggering it.

Thank you! Regarding the collar. Gypsy did this to Clea for almost a year, sometimes I would pull her off and tell her no, sometimes give her a time out, and use the "leave it" command. She was very stubborn about that and it took forever for her to stop. Didn't help that Clea just let her. We went through 3 collars before she got it. It drove me nuts for the longest time. Hoping your pup figures it out sooner.

How could I miss this? My jaw dropped when you did the nail clipping. How do you know that you do not cut too far? I do as you said, I clip very carefully until I see the dot and getting smaller slices off seems to not irritate her so much as if I would cut a larger, so we stick to that. But it baffles me how quick you clipped without seeing the underside of that nail 😂 Lou Lou comes with me to the stable and she loves to roll in a lot of stuff I dont even want to know. Since she sleeps in the bed I dont want her to smell or have anyting on her of course so I adjust my bathing around the smell/ visual thing. But I must also say that sometimes its enough to brush it off, they have awesome fur conserning stickiness of dirt. I also use a furminator and a zoom groom afterwards.

My boy sometimes gets a bit of a fray or hangnail on a claw, and just like human hangnails it might get worse if I don't take care of it right away. He hates the Dremel, so I was wondering what would be the best alternate method to deal with that sort of thing.
@TheHeelerMama
@TheHeelerMama 2 жыл бұрын
If part of the nail breaks off like that and if he won't let you sand it the only thing to really do is trim it the best you can and then clean it with warm water and apply septic powder if needed. Then monitor the nail to make sure there is no bleeding or infection the next few days and make sure it's healing properly. There is no other alternative really. Lucien would get those a lot but loved getting groomed even the dremel lol Once he snapped an entire nail of his in half and then I had to go to the vet for that one. It's good that you get them off as soon as you see them.

I take my BH to the groomers . I bumped up her appointments to every 5 weeks because she sleeps in my bed and I live on a 8 mile dirt road on 10 acres . is that too much ? Someone abandoned her on my road last summer. Vet told me she was 2 or 2 in a half 6 months ago. I'm about to start training classes with her next week as she tends to listen when she feels like it 🙄😂 other than that she's a great dog. My boarder collie Ty loves her. I named her Trouble.

Trouble is a cute name and very fitting for a heeler lol. When I ran my shop from home I would groom my original crew every 6 weeks for a while there and they did fine. They didn't need it I just wanted them all pretty lol. Just keep an eye on her coat. If it's too dry, flaking skin, or looking unhealthy I would cut back. Your groomer should warn you too if she sees anything starting. I use to groom another heeler that came in every 7-8 weeks because she was always getting into so much mud etc and she never had a problem either.

I partially cheat because I have a grooming table with the lead that helps me get them use to it lol, but I also use a lead to help guide their head during baths and also have used treats or lick mats to distract them until they learn how to do it properly. I love using K9 Advantix. It's a topical one not a collar. I've never been a fan of the collars. But if they are really present it's time for a major deep clean in the house. Adams shampoo and sprays I use to use while having my grooming shop in my house and they worked really well for me if I ever saw the little buggers invading lol. Wash everything you can even her bed and might need to treat the yard. If you use the Adams shampoo I would wait a couple days before applying the flea collar or topical treatment, and you want to make sure you do at least 4 treatments (monthly) if you go the topical route that way you insure you kill the life cycles of all the fleas.

For starters breathe. ❤ Things happen. Good news is usually damage will happen to the coat when this is done numerous times to a dog with a double layer coat. I'm not sure how far down she was shaved or how fuffy she is since she's a mix but if an inch or more was left you will be fine. Just work on brushing and if you are in warmer weather at all (I don't know where you live) just make sure she stays cool and in the shade. Sometimes dog with double layer coats need shaving for medical or for matting, but in general yes don't shave them. It's very rare it completely damages the coat just by doing it once. I had to shave an entire chow once due to a skin condition to help treat the dog and his coat came back just as beautiful after he was all healed up. Since your pup is longer haired make sure any brushes you get are for long haired pups there is a difference in brushes. Hope that helps and puts you at ease a bit. ❤😊

@@alvarorivas9896 Are you sure they weren't hot spots that you just didn't see before the bath? Hot spots can sometimes be gooey and the fur will pop off from those but it's not usually caused by a bath unless you left soap on them. What are you’re thoughts on having a male ACD neutered ?
@TheHeelerMama
@TheHeelerMama 2 жыл бұрын
I think it's a personal choice. I personally think if you are going to do it they should be at least 6 months old. I don't agree with doing it any younger than that like many are doing now. I think 6-12 months is the best time and my main reason for doing it is to prevent any unwanted puppies in case they roam and have a good time. :) I know there is must debate on behavior changes or aggression but I can say having groomed unfixed males and females both can be hormonal and temperamental, more the females but males have it too.

The Heeler Mama Thanks for your reply. Buck is approx 9 months old and we got him from a family who he was too much for and honestly I think that sometimes my self . We are in the process of moving from a small house with a little yard to a house on 46 acres in the country. My wife is worried about him “ marking” his territory in the new house . Never had a ACD , even though I’ve been around other breeds my whole life. I’m just hoping it will slow him down a few mph . He’s a very good dog who wouldn’t leave my side when I got ran over by my farm tractor. He knew I was hurt and he was right there with me until my wife got there. I think things will be a lot better at the new house and I’ve recovered from my injury. At the moment he is more than a hand full. Sorry so long but wanted you to have an idea of our situation and ask your opinion.

@@donaldmanning8263 Some dogs can still mark after they are neutered. Doing it sooner than later usually helps that. I mean they still mark in general males or females if they smell a good spot outside lol but it can help calm them down if they don't have an outlet for those hormones so to speak. Buck sounds like he's a really good boy and has a good bond already with you. I think if he is neutered and has that much room to run he will improve. They take a bit to calm down the first 2 years is the hardest but altering him could help calm him a bit more. High energy is an understatement with these guys. I know I neutered our one boy at 8 months and it helped him stop wanting to roam. Still tried to pee on every tree though lol. I hope everything works out and glad to hear you are recovered.

@TheHeelerMama
@TheHeelerMama 2 жыл бұрын
Your welcome and no, no real issues with nail biting. Gypsy sometimes bites her back nails but it's when spring hits and her allergies kick in. I'm still trying to figure out what to do to help her through it. But if nail biting is from allergies, rinsing their paws off from pollen etc can help deter them from doing it, (which is what I've had to do for her and it's seemed to help) but they can also chew from anxiety, infections, boredom or if they just feel their nails are too long they are trying to take care of it lol. It's just trying to figure out which it is. If you keep up with the nails and they are still doing it then I would think it could be boredom or allergies. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Questions make us better pet parents. 😁💙
