Just wanted to thank you for sharing this video my good boy Finn looks exactly like aspen but has a collie like tail. I normally brush out and bath once a month but would pay 100 every 6 months for a cut but your video has given me confidence to do it on my own because my doggy is well behaved. I will buy the special brush a nice pair of snips and an electric shaver and save that money for more toys(lord knows we go through balls like treats)! I love your videos and of course Aspen❣️I have a female Australian Shepherd and a boy Mini Aussie. It definitely was not love at first sight, as my female was so jealous of him which ensued in my female, Shelby attacking Olee. No broken skin or blood loss thank goodness. They’ve worked things out now and it’s more relaxed but my Olee is afraid to let go of his inhibitions and play. Shelby wants to play with him so much but I’m sure it’ll take a bit more time for him to feel secure. All said, I just want to say I’m so grateful for your grooming tips. For those dogs that love to sit when you're working with them, I highly recommend investing in a DogUp stand!! There is a groomer on KZbin that goes by MyFavoriteGroomer or Dede Croy here and she's the one that invented it as far as I know. Her product is able to be shipped internationally, comes in Mini, Medium, and Large, and has covers for it if you aren't a fan of the stainless steel.

My Aussie (Marley) does not have that immense amount of hair...just have to trim the back of his legs up to his tail. But the undercoat!!!!! Oh boy.... Tried all the combs and tine brushes...inadequate. So we got a pet vacuum with the de-shedding head on it and rum it over Marley once a month...but waaaay more in the spring and fall. The hair that comes off this animal is insane. In the spring, we do the deed and then place clumps of hair in some of our taller shrubs in the back...and... We get families of bright red Cardinals nesting there. Always put the hair back into nature where you can. The birds LOVE IT for their nests...

Wow! She is so well behaved. You have really done a great job with her. Aspen is a beautiful dog! I have two 7 month old Aussie pups. They are brother and sister, litter mates. They are double chaos but we love them. Bath time for each is overwhelming. Do you have any tips? When should I start taking them to the groomer?

Thanks! The earlier the better when it comes to getting them used to grooming. I started Aspen out with grooming at about 3 months of age. If you are going to take them to a groomer, you could always start with getting them bathed and combed out, which is a shorter process than the full groom. That way they are eased into the process (which can be important as Aussies can be very skittish and needy on the grooming table). Once they get used to being brushed out and bathed by a groomer, then they can move on to the full groom. Good luck with your pups!

This was so incredibly helpful, thank you! I wish Aspen's back leg fur had been longer to start. Last summer was the last time I did trimmed that part and I basically shaved it. Would love to see how to deal with more growth than Aspen had. I understand you give her more frequent cuts so this probably isn't possible.

My vet uses a cotton ball that's been wet with rubbing alcohol. It cleans the ear but doesn't leave moisture behind because it dries quickly. Leaving moisture inside the ears could actually cause an infection.

I currently have a Australian shepherd and blue heeler mix. He’s currently 7 months old and his fury has gotten significantly longer. The only thing is that it looks completely crazy and not neat at all! His fur is curly on his back and sticks upwards in some places rather than down. It’s really not a big issue, but it does annoy me. I’ve tried brushing him dry, blow drying and brushing him after a bath, and even just letting him air dry but nothing seems to work. I’m not sure if it’s bc he’s a mixed breed or not. I’ve also been thinking about trimming him in some places bc he had surgery about a month ago and his belly had to be completely shaven down, so his fur is also slightly uneven.

I find your videos so incredibly helpful! I have a 12 week old border collie/Aussie mix and he struggles to sit still... Just so I can properly prep him for future grooming when his hair gets longer, how did you train Aspen to sit so still while grooming her?

I know I'm going to get a lot of flack for this, but here goes... I live on a ranch in the high desert with my beautiful blue-merle girl, Jasmine. There are a LOT of burrs and grass/foxtail awns to deal with, plus the summer temps stay in the high 90's or low 100's! Therefore, I shave her in late Spring leaving just enough hair on top so she doesn't get sunburned. I also do a 'Poodle Clip' on her toes so I can easily find any awns. I let her grow out in the winter months, but keep the hair clipped in her armpits, underbelly and between her hind legs to prevent snowballs from building up. People have scolded me saying, "You're never supposed to clip an Aussie, it ruins their undercoat!" Or, "Their undercoat helps keep them cool." Yada, yada. I certainly wouldn't want to wear a fur coat in the desert heat and I know for a fact that she's much more comfortable without hers! I also believe these opinionated souls are well meaning, but they have never had to get off their horse to pull out cockleburs which are unavoidable by any water holes! Anyway, thanks for the video as I'm always looking for useful tips. :D

My mom took my Aussie to a vet and they cut her hair 😭... do you think her double coat could have been damaged? She is really nervous and she turns around and bites her own hair and gets patchy... that’s the reason my mother took my dog to have her hair cut “short”... maybe 1/2 inch from her skin

Sorry to hear that. A double coat can grow back very patchy if it is shaved (since the fluffy undercoat tends to grow faster than the guard hairs). I would suggest letting it grow back to see if you can restore it back to normal. Of course, if there is a reason that is pertinent to your dogs health for shaving the coat (hot spots, etc), then your dogs health is more important than maintaining that beautiful long coat. Hope all goes well with your Aussie.

I think that depends on the dog and the skin type. If you have a dog with sensitive skin, maybe an oatmeal shampoo. If you have a dog with lots of white on the chest and legs, maybe a brightening shampoo....so it really depends on the dog.

Ana Jeane I’m happy you have changed your mind. 😊 The wonderful love you receive from the awesome dogs outweighs any shedding they have. Please, please don’t ever have your Aussie shaved. It will surely ruin their beautiful coat. Don’t let anyone tell you that the dog will be cooler if you shave them. You are then putting them at risk of being sunburned and skin cancer from the sun. Their coat actually acts as a protectant against extreme heat. Learn all you can about dog care and learn about the joy of having a loving, smart and fun dog you’ll have in the Aussie breed. They are such a loving breed so never be harsh with your Aussie. It would surely break their heart. 💔 Wishing you the joy of bringing this special dog to your home and your heart❣️🥰
