Those weren’t the manual controls. What Thor grabbed onto and operated was the remaining pieces of the mentioned Iris that once operated the forge and let the star’s heat pass through without issue.

There wasn't a manual control. There was a device there that normally there that would withstand the force of the star. It was damaged by Thanks and broke under the stress of first attempt if you watched the movie and not clips on KZbin. The rest of the dwarves were killed expect for Eitri.

the star almost kills him but the groot handle did make it special. for one thing if groot ever died he could be reborn from thors axe. his has could theoretically grow into a Groot lol with how groots biology works. the uru axe/hammer head is just straight magic metal and even with his last weapon its enchantments extended to the handle as well. another person pointed out the leather handle on mjolnir should have snapped a long time ago as its leather... lol

So groot is one of the strongest things out there. He is also the most worthy. Its his arm that lifts and wields the axe head. The handle holds up to all the forces that the axe head and thor can throw at it. Groot is able to break that handle with one karate chop of his other arm.

Thor wields the axe by holding onto the severed limb. That means that anyone can wield it. If Thor puts the axe on a coffee table, you can pick up the table but not the axe. Same theory.

This is Stormbreaker NOT Mjölnir 2 completely different axes. Stormbreaker is used to summon the Bifrost. Mjölnir was enchanted by Oden so that all that are worthy be granted the powers of Thor. Neither of these things has to do with the wielder being "the strongest".
