you know, for a band that is so often derided for their not being knee deep in hallucinogenics and true 'rock and roll', they really do acquit themselves remarkably well here. Good Vibrations is an deceptively complex song - especially as engineered by Brian Wilson - but bravo to the Cowsills for a tight performance here - and Live, at that!

One of the best "cover bands" ever, these guys were (and Bob, Paul and John still are) so VERY talented. It's hard watching Barry, lost to Katrina seven years ago, but so good that film like this has been preserved. Billy will always be the leader even though he's leading from rock n' roll heaven now with his brother. I like to think they get to hang with Carl and Dennis Wilson now. Rest in peace, brothers.

Done well in a live, TV studio environment (ABC's 'Happening '69"), with none of the studio wizardry from Gold Star and no Wrecking Crew (yes, they did the instrumentals on most of the Beach Boys' 60's recordings, then taught the band how to replicate it live). Watching John Cowsill drumming live behind the current Beach Boys recently was interesting, and his wife, Vicki (The Bangles) is also quite a guitarist. Lots of music around that house. BTW, the Wrecking Crew was primarily used not because the BB's were bad musicians; studio time back then in LA was rare and expensive, and the Crew was noted for quick reading and doing great work fast under various producers. If it sounds like assembly-line music, well, it was. The key was making it not sound like that. 'Good Vibrations" took dozens of sessions and cost Capitol Records over $50.000 (in 1965-66 dollars) to get it the way Brian Wilson wanted it.
@gerrydooley9515 жыл бұрын
Brian started to use some members of the WC because his idol Phil Spector used them. He used them mostly between 1964-"66. AFM sheets indicate that the Boys played a lot on their records and the WC less then has been stated, meaning, it's been exaggerated.

Ifit were up to me, I would put The Cowsills right next to the Beatles in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame where they belong
@kathykay20106 жыл бұрын
You're right, they deserve a place in RRHOF. No doubt the Beatles set a standard that everyone else is measured by but they broke up decades ago while the surviving Cowsills are still making music. The Beatles sure had the hits for years but in many ways I'd put the Cowsills before the Beatles because a large part of the Cowsills were paid professionals before/while in their teens. Bill and Bob were singing and playing at home by the age of seven. Not to mention the fact that they were doing all of that while being beaten by their Dad on a regular basis until they left home. This family is an amazing example to the strength of the human spirit to keep going in the worst of situations. They had the ability to make their lives look so perfect while being raised in a horribly abusive home. They often had to wear clothes that hid the bruises from the beatings they all got. John, Paul, George and Ringo were late bloomers compared to the Cowsill family. The Cowsills have been so seriously overlooked by the RRHOF in my opinion. It's a shame they have not been inducted...
@samstevens71724 жыл бұрын
kathykay2010 uh, no. I like the Cowsills, but as good as the Beatles? I mean this in a joking way, but that’s crazy talk. Name the five top Cowsills songs. Name five hits they wrote. They certainly had their moments, but they weren’t even as good as the band they’re covering here. They were a band that had some good moments, and that’s about it. Unless you argue emotionally, no rational argument puts them in contention. Are they better than America? I don’t think they are in the HOF, so no. An emotional wish that I appreciate, but even with the skewed system the HOF uses, they really don’t qualify.
