That animation was so good! And honestly, looking at everything that went wrong, from his car breaking out at that crazy angle to the armco giving in and the roll hoop pivoting him to come to rest in such a bad place... It's like every safety measure implemented since 1994 (the monocoque, the HANS, the halo, the new suit) worked to counter that and save him, until, in the end, it came down only to his strength of will. It's like Lauda, Senna and Bianchi stood over his shoulder as guardian angels to give him a chance.

The driver would have been decapitated had it not been for the Halo. The guardrails need to be constructed so that the car cannot go under them. Maybe soft walls like at NASCAR could be useful for this.

It's mental. I'll be honest, I was against the halo when it was introduced in 2018. I felt like it looked disgusting, and I thought that the chances of it saving a driver from a piece of debris (like massa in 2009) were very slim, and even massa himself said it wouldn't have saved him. And this had been enough evidence my irrational past self to believe that the halo wouldn't save a driver, and that it wasn't worth the horrible things it did to the looks of the car, not to mention that it spelled the end of open cockpit racing. However, what I hadn't thought about was accidents like this one, or an entire car hitting the driver's head like Leclerc in 2018. And it didn't take too long to get used to it, either, and now when I look back at pre-Halo era cars, I think "Christ, did those guys really drive those cars?". Now that it's saved so many lives, it's time to stop moaning about the (not actually too bad) things it does to the aesthetics of the car.

But alas, he had no Halo. Romain’s good fortune was that he remained conscious, because after impact, he was the Only one who saved his life. He got out unassisted. The first help he got was a hand on the arm for guidance after he leapt onto the barrier amid flames all around him. Bearing in mind this was after 28 seconds. It still took much longer to put the fire out. Which would’ve had to be done before the medical team Or Marshals got to him to help him out of the cockpit. Jackie Stewart has never forgotten how this day of 1973 october the 6th died his friend and team partner François Cevert at Watkins Glen (USA) and fought all along his life, after finishing his race career, to improve security to share pilot's life. He took them while in the spin of the cockpit, which would have helped shed G forces. Never again in 1,000 repeats would a driver walk away from that. Hope he bought a couple of lottery tickets. without the roll hoop the drivers would be in more danger, more often
@Timberwolf694 жыл бұрын
@jameshisself If I remeber correctly, the other side of that access road was also covered by guardrails. I'm wondering what might have happened if the halo and the roll hoop were one safety structure and this airbox another crash structure that would break away on an impact. And thus just slowing the car down some more in these circumstances instead of acting like a solid hinge, which, if the middle guardrail hadn't deflected the movement, might as well have sent him up and around into a sort of cartwheel motion.

For me, in order of "appearance" the security systems that saved Romain are these: 1. The whole Survival Cell 2. The HALO (that's now part of the survival cell, but an crucial part of it in this case) 3. The HANS 4. The Headrest 5. The Helmet 6. The Nomex underwear and the whole fireproof race suit, gloves and socks. 7. The Medical Car, that arrived just seconds after the crash. Regards

@francessweeney23083 жыл бұрын
If this had happened in the 70s,Grosjean's family very likely would have been receiving a phone call from the crew chief telling her to go the hospital morgue and identify what's left of her husband. This happened to the family of racing driver Francois Cervert,he was driving a training lap when he lost the car on a bend, crashed through a barrier in excess of 110mph. Cervert was killed instantly-his body split from neck to hip.

Hell, if this had happened in 2017 the same call would’ve gone out. The halo saved his life, pure and simple.
@beenaplumber8379 Жыл бұрын
Outstanding animation! It doesn't need to look photorealistic to illustrate every detail of what happened. Thanks for making this! This crash seems to illustrate a vulnerability in the ARMCO barrier. The rails are attached to each other, even after the post is destroyed. Had they been attached only to the post, it seems to me the rail segments would have broken without needing the halo. It's when the rail segments don't break but the lower and middle rails part enough to let the car through that the Koinigg/Cevert-type fatalities occur. The halo saved Grosjean (and numerous other drivers now - I think it's a godsend), but that doesn't mean we shouldn't keep trying to improve barrier safety. If the ARMCO post is gone, the barrier becomes three sharp blades that are no longer connected. Allowing the segments to separate once the post is gone should eliminate that danger. It eliminates a level of containment, of course, but had the middle rail segment not been separated, the force dynamics through the car would have been very different. Other types of cars might be vulnerable to that scenario. In fact, had the top rail segments separated when the post was destroyed, Grosjean would likely have escaped the fire more quickly. The top rail became a very real trap hazard. I hope smarter minds than mine have looked into this. I remember the fiery bloodbaths of the 70s, and it's been nice these past decades, seeing accidents as something drivers should be able to walk away from nearly every time, and they do. This accident was horrifying, and the first time I saw it, I already knew he walked away. It was still horrifying! It's a horrifying reminder that we can't stop trying to make things safer. Even with the halo, the survival cell, the advanced fuel containment, and all the fire protection, he could have died in this one. His escape was partly obstructed by an intact top rail that didn't have to be there, and I hope FIA took note of that.

Wow, great 3D animation, very illuminating in what happened. Thanks! I'm wondering if they should make the t-cam structure more fragile, because if that was dislodged right away, the safety cell would have rolled further away, and Grosjean would have been able to climb out right away, and maybe would have not been surrounded by flames.
