Gross motor skills, include skills such as balancing and walking and require the use of many large muscle groups and the whole body. Children need to develop these skills before mastering fine motor skills.
Gross motor skills include sitting, crawling, running, jumping, throwing a ball, and climbing stairs. Even the first time a baby lifts his head is an example of a gross motor skill. There are lots of fun and simple activities you can do with your child to help develop gross motor skills.
Examples of balance exercises include:
Shifting your weight from side to side.
Standing on one foot.
Walking heel to toe.
Using a balance board or stability ball.
Doing tai chi, yoga or Pilates.
