That last game is how every single "non-meme" Magic game should be, with no exception. Unfortunately a game where the back and forth actually matters until the end is incredibly rare, and even if I have nothing against aggro as a *strategy* (essentially for meta balance) the fact that fast and boring games are encouraged because of the inner *economy* instead makes this situation even more rare. By the way, amazingly well played by CGB who understood the exact moment it was time to change strategy.

The last turn cycle reminded me of chess puzzles where they go "find the mate in two" and you find yourself staring at it and thinking: "In two? That can't be possible, right?" Great playing throughout. Aristocrats is my favourite archetype and - in line with what you've stated in the past - I've often found myself gesturing wildly at plays you made, but with this one I was quite awed. I haven't found a build that satisfies me yet with the anvil. Mine lean a little more midrange (bunches of removal seems to be the one thing stopping the runes deck in its tracks), but there isn't quite enough value to put up a consistent fight against other midrange decks (let alone have the proper resilience against control).

I'm the UR player that shows up on the untapped record at the end. I was testing jank but got an oops all goldspans hand. I had a lot more fun interacting with this than cat oven and didn't believe in the anvil until our game.

I built this deck after watching and didn’t have all the cards, so I threw in sanguine statuette. It’s not perfect but gets great value by making a blood on etb then becoming a hasty 3/3 whenever a blood is sacrificed (from any source). Helped me get pat not having hives/dens or all 4 smelters and anvils. I’d recommend trying it out. Awesome deck, awesome video!

Thoughts on Voltage Surge vs more Infernal Grasps? Fewer Sorins? I usually copy CGBs decklists without thinking overmuch but this feels like it could use tweaking.

@@jollyjoker6340 CGB is a million times better than me at magic and a billion at deck building. That said, I’ve been playing the deck this afternoon and the voltage surges feel kinda awkward. I also generally use feed the swarm instead of infernal grasp (I find enchantment removal is oftentimes really useful and I usually don’t wind up losing much more life than grasp), I have 3x in the deck and it’s working nicely. I took out a surge and the grasps I think for those spots? Can’t remember precisely

So, I like cheap with this deck. Hook (I use 4), Warlock class both help with drain. If you’re using synthesizer early, Sorin is often a dud, so I don’t play him at all. I like my removal to be able to target planeswalkers in this meta, so no Grasps and I add Bloodchief.

@@jollyjoker6340 also, I dropped in a lolth because I only have 1x of her and 1x of sorin. Her spiders are nice bodies that help deal with fliers and she gains loyalty counters when your creatures die, so she fit in nicely

I liked the end the video because I’m cool and only cool people stay to the end. Oh also I like games that are close. Win or lose. If you get video footage of something like that and it’s a loss I don’t mind so long as it is close. Great video. Well done. I never had a doubt in your play there. At the end you made some plays that I think showcase why people flock to your channel and or should do so. That and the times you call cards or situations exactly seconds before it happens.

Wins like that last one are the sweetest. Being in kill range for the opponent for over half an hour, pushing through their whole deck and all their win cons, getting mana flooded in the process and having to use the smallest openings in your opponents otherwise flawless play just to stall him for a little bit longer, only to take the game in the end with a cutting edge win. I can't imagine the sadness your opponent must've felt. There wasn't even enough energy left in either of you for a GG. ;D

First off, Awesome Game that last one! Real nail biter! I wish I was better and knowing the causes of the sound issues below. I'd offer fixes, but I don't so I won't. I can only show them. Again I verify most of them with my Tablet. Large Sound Garbling Spot Starts at approx. 22:53 and ends at 23:04 Second big garbling spot starts at 35:21 and ends at 35:26 A third garbled mess shows up at 41:20 Ends at about 41:23. Starts back up at 41:30 and ends at about 41:35

I actually just made my own anvil deck today before I came across your video! I'm playing in historic so my deck actually uses the cauldron familiar/witch's oven as well as the anvil and mayhem devil, very high survivability even when dropping to 1 life! There's always a way back with this deck, but as you said at the end, it takes patience to play it!

Yeah, definitely appreciate the design of Anvil over Cat-Oven. That combo was(is in Historic) just absolutely just poor design in terms of that it did too much for too little mana and was extremely difficult to interact with. Agree with the comments that the deck seems to need more Infernal Grasp/Feed the Swarm. Some number of Voltaic Surge is fine, but this deck has more artifact sac'ing outlets than most Anvil decks with the Smelters, so it felt like there was a decent tension there.

My fav deck in the meta. Of course stayed till the end. I do run it in Bo3 tho and Bloody Betrayal is a great sideboard tool vs Runes. It works great with Mukotai Soulripper and gives you a glimpse of the satisfaction of Claim the Firstborn back. Overall I think the Smelter seems meh to me, cause its not a free sacrifice and its an additional sac outlet that needs artifacts but can't sac creatures. I prefer Soulripper, because its a faster clock as well. Four Sorin also seems a bit much for a Synthesizer deck, I think two are fine. But that game vs Runes was great, kinda shows how resilient sacrifice can be if piloted well.

On bo1 I don't think Voltage Surge is the ideal removal. Even Mono W tends to grow beyond Surge's damage when going Naya for Halena and Showdown. Maybe Grasp, Power Word Kill or something around these lines works better. Anyway, an exciting and impressive show of skill piloting the deck! Good work, CGB!

Have to make two more Sorins with Mythic Wildcards. Been playing the other variations of this build. This one makes the archetype more viable in the current standard meta and isn't as broken as cat oven ultimately. Still have nightmares from the cat oven combo, still see it in historic. A.K.A. waking nightmare.

Hey CGB! 👋skipped to the 4 minute mark of the episode and I got a neat idea 💡(probably not the first) what if you did a an episode where you tried to solve a board state that you did not create yourself? 🤔 what if you maybe let another person, say another content creator or volunteer, play part of a match while you are unaware of what’s happening and in the middle of a conflicted board-state, you CGB, are brought to the task of solving and winning against your opponent in this particular scenario. Any comments would be greatly appreciated from others 😀😀. Surely the MASTERMIND that is CovertGoBlue 💧💧 could solve even the most difficult of board state scenarios
