Addendum to my previous comment - I did add the pickup spacer and upgraded the tuners. But the best upgrade I found is to replace the soft wood (pine?) bridge support with a rosewood or ebony one. Volume and sustain are greatly improved! Also, the fretboard is very thirsty - I applied several coats of mineral oil and this improved the "feel" quite a bit. I absolutely love this guitar!

Thanks for watching and commenting Stephan…string gauge and type really is a personal preference based on what you like and your style of play. If you want a fuller, more jazz sound then perhaps some flat wounds would work better for you. I use D’Addario 9’s on most of my guitars. @@1cleandude Thanks for watching and commenting! I didn’t notice any additional 60 cycle after raising the pup. If anything, I believe it to be cleaner. P90 poles to bottom of strings are about 2.5 mm on the bass end and 2.25 on the treble end. I think the shim I used here was good for what I was needed. It still allows for individual pole adjusting and I can still bring the action down a tad if needed.

Mr. Stewart, On your recommendation I purchased the GB-300 in natural finish and its a really great guitar a welcome change from the strat, tele hegemony that floods the market. I purchased a new nut a Tusq and some flat wound strings. I'm a little shy about stripping her down to her knickers to make the changes but will persevere. (No guitar techs for a 140 mile radius and even then its kind of shakey since the plague). The only time I went to the tech desk at GC they quoted the woman who took it in for me 600$ for a string change and the associated setup work. My primary point is to thank you for your honest and accurate reviews. I'm looking for a tele style guitar now, one with a hollow/semi hollow body and coil splitting could you make a suggestion please. Keep up the good work your a valuable asset to the online guitar universe.
@stephanpayne18412 жыл бұрын
I forgot to add I also got the pick up spacers to raise the pup closer to the strings. On the recommendation of Matt another YT contributor I lowered the bridge on my SX tele to get some twang in the sound. Before that it was lacking a tWanger. Sometimes adjustments to guitars seem counter intuitive. My bucket list is to modify the GB-003 with a cutaway and a Guitar Fetish floating tremolo, a Bigsby type Trem that attaches only to the bottom strap button so no screws in the soundboard or body of the instrument. That will take care of the wiggle stick now A cutaway would sure be sweet. If a luthier appears somewhere in my territory I might pick up another 003 and have the cutaway mod done to it.
@JimmyStewart12 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen…congrats on your new Grote Jazz box! Doing the setup work yourself is not only going to save you the $$, but allows you to know the instrument a lot better and get it setup to YOUR specifications. Truly appreciate your stopping in to the channel and the kind comments here! Much appreciated! If you are looking for a good budget Thinline Tele style, IYV has the ITF-300 NA with dual humbuckers and they have the ITF-400 TRD with dual P90’s as well. Neither has coil splitting, but I know some who have modded the 300 NA to coil splitting. The 400 has P90’s so no need (they are single coils). Both are very nice guitars and well worth the current cost on Amazon.

@@stephanpayne1841 P90’s like to be closer to the strings…wide, flat magnets (no poles). Thanks for stopping in Louis…yes, I did remove the shim, however it’s all personal preference really. By specs, the P90 is to low on this guitar. Looking at 16:36 to the video, it appears the strings are heavily biased to the treble side of the fretboard (high e appears on the binding), and not located over the P90 nubs. Assuming you've not adjusted it by, that's like caused by the floating bridge having shifted to the treble side of the guitar. Should be slid back so everything lines up again. Great vid that showed me how to do the shim, and where to get it, which is nice. Hate it when someone tells me to get something and then neglects to mention where, what part no., etc.

To anyone who wants to do this kind of mod...take your fucking strings off first! Jesus Christ dude! And don't do it on your lap...lay it down on a table with a cloth underneath. Don't make it harder on yourself.

Ok....so I explained the reasons why I did this the way I did. Wasn’t trying to make it harder on myself or anybody else. Very minor “quick mods” easily done without much fuss. I just restrung the guitar in a prior video, and decided then that the pup needed raising, and Grote was kind enough to send me the new (old) truss rod cover. Nothing I needed my bench for here....sorry to upset you, but the idea was to show that you didn’t really need to remove strings, or the pup, nor preparing a bench for minor “mod” work. I address this at the beginning of the video....
