Over time, I was starting to think that "Rat" shaking was a metaphor for deviancy. Over time, the rat itself, while goofy with the yelling, shaking and the suave voice acting, started to become more foreboding. Did our MC try to drown out his sorrows and guilt in mindless self pleasure? Or he actually enjoy the act of choking his wife and the collective lucidity of his "clarity" finally plateau into a crushing sense of sorrow? I'd say the best change that could happen for this game is to change the choking sounds of the rat to fit a more feminine tone once you got closer to the truth. The slow fade from goofiness would invoke a greater sense of dread in the player. Great game though, the tone shift to a murderous intent felt quite natural.

Here's kinda what I thought might have happened: The man, his wife, and their infant move to a farm/plantation in basically the middle of nowhere. They probably moved there recently, judging by the many boxes everywhere and generally empty house. After staying there for a bit and getting settled in, they begin to notice a rat problem. It gets worse and worse, (their solutions, like the rat traps, aren't working) until eventually the man sees a commercial on TV, talking about a way to deal with the rats. Now, for some context, the man is a heavy drinker, which is part of the reason everything began to go down. Anyway, the rats become angered by the ratshaking, and eventually target his child, devouring it in its crib while it can do nothing to defend itself. This event sends the man into grief, and coupled with his drunkenness, leads to him begging for forgiveness from the rats by kidnapping neighbors (could be anyone, but there were many, judging by the amount and variation of the bodies) and offering them as food in his basement. His wife doesn't even know what is happening, until one day the man offers her to the rats as well. Now with nothing left, he drowns himself with alcohol with the rats as his only friends, until in a drunken rage he picks one up and leaves his house to go shake it. Then the game progresses as a rat-and-alcohol induced hallucination of the guilt and shame from his unforgivable actions. He may also have set fire to the house (via the stove) at some point after killing his wife. And after all this, he can't even find it in himself to kill the rats anymore, as he becomes obviously distraught when they die. The only thing I can't connect is the presence of the many tapes. my best guess is that that's how he originally saw the commercial, maybe a neighbor lent it to him after hearing about the rat problem. it's also possible that the tape came with the ratshaker kit (the box from the commercial), maybe as an explanation of how to best shake the rats. either that or the "ratshaking" is actually code for appeasing the rats by offering sacrifices to them, which also would have come with the kit. Another theory I have for the tapes is that (due to the number of photographs we see) the man was fond of recording things, so he may have recorded/photographed each of his victims' deaths or struggles prior to dying. We definitely know he photographed his wife's capture and death, as we see it playing on the TV. Additional notes: I figure the many newspaper clippings are pieces about the neighbors going missing, since the man is sacrificing them to the rats. The "meat walls" and such are because the man is ceasing to see people as people, and instead as just "rat food". The blood-filled toilets and sinks and such were probably what the man used to get rid of any blood or remaining guts that the rats didn't eat. Those and the fridge might have also been used as storage for the bodies until it was time to feed them to the rats. The flashing red and blue lights during the credits lead me to believe that the neighbors eventually called the police, leading to (hopefully) some kind of retribution for the man's crimes, aside from the mental torment he was already going through. That was kind of a lot, but this game really fascinated me for some reason. Feel free to reply with any theories you might have, I'd love to hear them!

Always going left has the same result as always going right. I always go left since my dad taught me to play doom that way

Interestingly bizarre, and it did the juxtaposition of the cute rat art and the gore nicely. Jumpscare at the end was cheap. Also, the rat desperately needed even just two frames of mouth animation as it talked.
@ak_noraАй бұрын
I like to believe the rat didn't even talk, it's just the character we play pretending as the rat like a sock puppet.

As our Hero begins to shakes that rat. He starts to become corrupted by the SHAKER. With such enthusaism, he says, " Yes... don't stop, that's right, shake that rat" which made him realize.. That it might be about time to start adding some new rules to his content ..😅

so babies keep popping up, but the rat only says you killed the wife. does that mean the wife was still pregnant when she was killed? the baby wasnt born yet, and thats why some of them fade away, as you never get to see your child?

and the rat says "face US" towards the end
@j.k.4479Ай бұрын
@@TheHarvestBoy I think the rats consumed the baby while it was in the crib, the father probably went insane from that, or he was responsible for the baby at the time it happened and couldn't bear to tell his wife the truth and ended her out of fear. I think he is getting revenge on the rats now by shaking one.
@thebaconsarelitАй бұрын
They also say (paraphrase) I wonder if she knew what happened under her floor boards, so maybe he hid the baby under the floor telltale heart style and the rats ate it? Just a theory.

_Poor rat_ 🐀 The weird part was that I actually felt bad the times the rat was killed. I think it's a function of liking a cartoon and the absolutely wonderful rat VA. I liked this game - a little bit of this and that but the plot advancing with using shake/squeeze was weird and different.

Anyone else kinda roll their eyes when the rat said "It doesn't matter how much you shake me, you can't undo what has been done" (3:11)? It just revealed the entire plot of the game in the first several minutes, then takes a unique mechanic and turns it into the billionth example of, "this thing is symbolism for the guilt the main character feels after killing their family." Not saying the trope can't be done well, just that it's been done so often that if you're not creative or subtle with it, the "twist" at the end doesn't come across as a twist at all. Was anyone really expecting anything other than the dead body of the wife and/or baby at the end there?

Im thinking that the main character was an alcoholic, causing them to have a rat infestation, eventually the rats eat the baby, (shown by the rats in the baby bed), and then murdered his wife
