GROUCHO MARX | You Bet Your Life PILOT EPISODE (1949)

Rare unreleased footage from December 28th 1949 of Groucho Marx's radio show / television pilot for "You Bet Your Life".
Guests include newlyweds Howard Scala, a 305lb football player from the Green Bay Packers and his 6 foot tall wife Arlene Scala.
Second couple is carhop Evelyn Fredricksen and audience member Larry Steams who is a failed driving instructor and failed vacuum cleaner salesman.
Final couple for the show is Dr Mar Elia, a chiropractor known as The Great Wrestling Sheik Of Persia and Jess Swope, a footballer from USC.
You Bet Your Life was taken from Groucho's radio series of the same name. It was inspired after Groucho had done an improvisational scene with Bob Hope on radio. The idea was the same as it later was with Bill Cosby: to invite people on and have an unrehearsed conversation with them. Groucho could always be counted on to enliven the banter with his unique blend of comedy and wit. After talking with Groucho for several minutes, the contestants chose quiz questions from a category they had preselected and, if they answered them correctly, won money.
