Blackie... the way we were taught in the Army... at least the way that "I" was taught with the old open top canteen stove was when we placed the cup on the stove, we put it on in the opposite kidney shape. I see everyone putting the cup with the kidney shape in the same direction, which makes the cup fall into the stove. Like I said, setting it on in the opposite direction is how I was taught, and I still do it that way these days. Also... the fuel we used was the blue trioxane. Just thought to throw this out to you. Blackie , way back in the 60s scouting taught us to coat the outside of the cup and frying pan or cook pot with a bar of Ivory soap. I've always done this and the soot never has been a problem for me. It works beautifully. Plus gives you suds when down at the creek. Usually just enough to warsh the utensils as well. Then rinse with fresh water and dry in the sun.

Behind the canteen cup , under the flap , I have also squeezed in a collapsible Sea To Summit cup which makes drinking hot beverages more practical while they're still warm , without burning your lips ; it also has measurements on it . Have a great day Sir !

👍 Good video. I have used the Pathfinder Canteen Cup set for years. As you said it is an excellent kit. Canterbury’s greatest contribution to camping is the production of very good gear at very reasonable prices. I have been buying from so long I remember when you called in Dave actually answered the phone. Having said that I was glad to hear you mention the old Canteen Shop. Rob Simpson doesn’t get enough credit for his development of gear, like the stove for this kit and the lid you demonstrated, that we still use today. In fact, when Dave went off to make the Dual Survival show Rob took over his store until Canterbury returned.

Good info as always. If you go to Lowe's in the area they sell for sale signs and get some peel and stick reflective tape. Cut a circle shaped piece and stick it on the top of the lid. It will make it easy to find your canteen at night and help keep the lid from getting lost.

I got one of the original canteen sets from SRO, and hated the fold under cup handle. I could never get it to stay locked and not dump when I used it. I was really happy to get the butterfly handled cup, so now I have the complete set, two canteens, a stove, lid, and butterfly handles cup. SRO does have a lid like you want, it has a small d ring handle, strainer holes, and is recessed to lock into the cup. I suspect it would work like you want, I also suspect one could use the recess to pile coals on top to heat food similar to how one would a Dutch oven. I believe SRO offer the lid separately. By the way, the canteen cap is the exact same as the one on their round bottle if you need a spare.

To clean black soot off your canteen cup or any other camping pot, pan ect, aluminum or stainless, coat the outside with liquid dish soap before putting it in the fire. The soot comes off much easier.

I have the original version of the Pathfinder Canteen Set, and the 39oz Water Bottle Set. I also have modified my USGI Canteen Cup Kit with a Nalgene Bottle. Recently I purchased a Crusader ll Stove that I modified to fit the Pathfinder 25oz Cup. The Crusader l Stove was designed for Alcohol Gel, and Heat Tablets, but a Trangia Burner didn’t fit using the wire cup support. The Crusader ll Stove addressed the issue and raised the wire cup support. The Trangia (24?) fit perfectly in the Gel/Tablet Cup of the Stove. The Windscreen made it difficult to light the Alcohol Burner, and more difficult to handle the Snuffer Ring. I removed the sections of Windscreen where the Wire Cup Support passed through the tabs. It’s a really good modification when using with the Trangia Burner, unfortunately the Pathfinder Alcohol Burner, and Swedish Army Burner won’t work with the Crusader Stove, they’re too big! The Pouch that the British Army uses is much larger than the US Canteen Pouch. It will easily accommodate the whole Crusader Cup System. The Crusader System is a Stove, Metal Crusader Cup, Water Bottle, and a Plastic Crusader Cup. I’ve seen the pouch in MTP (Multicam); DMP (Woodland), and Black. I’m not sure if the Pathfinder Cup will fit the Crusader ll Stove since it’s larger, but I think it would fit okay. The US Canteen Cup is a perfect fit, and the Trangia Burner is such a snug fit that it’s a little difficult to remove. FYI, the Esbit Alcohol Burner is slightly smaller in diameter than the Trangia Burner. Hopefully this might come in handy if you need some extra material for a KZbin Video…

Great video Blackie!! I have recently upgraded my canteen situation in my so called practice kit lol, its really just a kit that I keep ready to go in case of impromptu trips on the mtn behind my house. I use it for times when I want to just scout the area or try out different skills. But like you, I prefer to carry my bottle in a sling carry mode because of accessibility, that way I am not having to take my pack off every time I want to take a sip. What I bought was a complete set up off Amazon, the bottle, cup, lid and it came with a spork. But I didn't have a way to carry it, so I bought a waxed canvas foraging pouch with a shoulder sling and it has two pockets on the front as well, and it works beautifully!!

I have the older canteen cup set with the other handle. Looks like you don't have to snap the two butterfly handles together like on the military canteen, for it to stay solid? Can you advise on which high-temp paint you recommend for stainless steel items? I have used an orbital palm/detail sander (and strips of sandpaper for the hard-to-reach spots) using 320 grit sandpaper. I have glass-bead blasted some other items, but with very thin stainless steel, the glass beads can warp some items. Just awaiting paint suggestions.

The question is; do I epoxy the eyelet to the out side of the cap, or do I attach one via a thru hole, nuts, lock/washers, and then seal it with food grade silicon?

Hey Blackie! I’ve questioned if I should spray paint my kit as well. I was wondering, are you going to also spray paint the canteen as well? I’m assuming you’re going to boil in your canteen now that you have a metal canteen and not a plastic one. Cleaning the lip around the opening can be difficult because of how it curls inward, unlike the SRO Bottle that is turned to the outside affording easy access to clean. A toothbrush helps to solve this issue. Otherwise it is a great piece of gear.
