I use minimalism at work. My office and work area are very neat only keep in my file cabinets the information that we need to have in a very neat orderly fashion. I try to keep my desk minimum and only have what I need in front of me at one time. I have lamps there to cut down on the strong light from the overhead to try to present a relaxing environment for work and I have ocean sounds in the background noise which is very comforting. I don’t throw garbage away in my office. I also have a microwave and refrigerator to cut down on the distraction of having to leave to eat lunch. I packed my lunch daily. I do take time out and go for walks either down the halls or up the stairs or on a nice day I’ll take a walk around campus while listening to your Podcast or music.

Advice for the guy that starts and stops his projects In addition to scheduling time and setting goals for creating things, be mindful that your content is NEVER going to be perfect. If you set a goal of releasing one KZbin video a week but you want it to be perfect, you run the risk of missing your deadline because your video isn't "ready." Sometimes your work will be ready, sometimes it won't be and that's okay. Every time you feel like an assignment you've given yourself isn't ready make a list of lessons learned to apply to the next task. Make your next project better than your last.

Matt, I jut wanna to say how much I love your content. I'm a Brazilian, lives in Brazil 😂, but your content change my view of what really is minimalism. Not a hypster thing, but it is a way of eliminats what doesn't add real value at life and focus on be more free to do what's is important from the bottom of our hearts. Thank you

I really needed to hear this right now. thanks so much. ive been having a hard time struggling with the constantly anxiety of being a failure as an artist. but I also need to give myself the constant reminder to keep going, to keep working on my stuff and to just focus on making simply good art.

Matt - The Minimalism Documentary was the beginning of my journey to freedom. So thank you for your work on that. One aspect I struggle with is that so many champions of minimalism seem to be young single people who don't have kids, don't have a house and have flexible jobs which allow them to wear TShirts all day. I have made progress de-cluttering my life but realized because of the many hats I wear (father, cyclist, skier, hiker, employee, boss..) that minimizing will look differently for me than for the usual cadre of minimalists. I am brand new to your KZbin channel. I want to search your content to see if there are any videos which speak to the challenges of minimizing in the suburbs with a busy lifestyle.

I've been listening to the show on my long commutes to and from various musical commitments. It's so refreshing to hear honest discussions of how people got places, and how sucky the grind is, but also, how if you can stick it out, it is possible to get somewhere. As someone who's been stuck in early stage grind for a while (but has recently made a bunch of changes to try and get out of it) this podcast gives me hope :) Congrats man, you're doing a 10/10 job.

I remember finding this channel right before the My Minimalist Apartment video blew him up. It was about two years into my journey of wanting to work for myself online, documenting my journey on KZbin, and this week I finally went full time freelance editing. Everything came together so quickly right as I quit my part time job. It's crazy looking back on these old Matt videos and taking the advice from the perspective of actually being a self employed freelancer. It really feels like I'm finally meaningfully progressing in the right way on this path.

So happy you mentioned the Last of Us. It's truly a piece of art. As a student Game Graphics Production, I'm also an aspiring creative but in a totally different field than most people on your podcast and you. Yet it helps a lot for my motivation and to see the links between different creative fields. I and probably others would love if you could bring in more people out of completely different industries. You do it from time to time but it would be awesome to see it more often. Anyway, keep up the podcast, been loving it!

Awesome to see the grind paying off Matt! Found out about you on KZbin about a week ago and have since consumed nearly all of your content. Great work, super to the point and definitely gave me a jolt of inspiration to keep creating and getting better at the process. I have been making KZbin videos for over a year and have had some success but I'm still fine turning the process and about to branch out into podcasting. Keep up the amazing work, I look forward to getting my content as polished as yours one day! 😉👊🏼

I love your suggestions about multitasking. I work freelance as a translator and content writer, therefore I keep checking my email and WhatsApp. Sometimes it frustrates me because my phone keeps ringing with the chat and email notification, I barely can focus on the work at hand. I keep checking it because I'm afraid it is from my clients and I have this feeling that I should reply them immediately. I'll definitely try scheduling the time to check my email and chat.

You can half ass two tasks but you can't give them both 100%. If you think of attention as finite you can only give a certain amount of that finite attention to each task. Sometime it might be divided 50/50 but sometimes it might be 25/75, if you doing three things at once it could be 20/20/60. You get the point. Every time you add another task you end up dividing that finite attention per task. This means that you give less and less to each task you try to do at the same time, which causes it to take longer to complete each task. Also, when it comes to task switching, it takes a good amount of time to get into a flow state so when you switch between 10 tasks at once you never get into a flow state. Flow states are key to giving something 100% of your attention which in turn means you give 100% of the effort you can.

Yes, The Last of Us is sooo good (I finished it 13 times since I first played it in 2014...)! As a musician and composer, I find that the soundtrack to that game is a great exemple of less is more and that taking risks pays (Gustavo Santaolalla used a ton of unusual instruments and objects to create the atmosphere - for those interested, check out "Gustavo Santaolalla: The music of the Last of Us" on the Playstation KZbin channel). It changed the way I see video games soundtracks in general. Also, great advice throughout the video. I still wondering if I want to go freelance (as a musician and/or writer), so that helps. Thanks! :)

For next AMA?...How discreet are you about your projects? I’m doing a certain style of motion graphics for a series I’m working on. I’ve been trying to network in a new city so I’ve been telling people about it. Lately, I’ve noticed a few people have been trying to hijack my project by saying “I should do this or that” or even saying they want me to do the exact same thing for them. A little more context: I’m animating New Yorker style profiles for artists. Have you ever experienced this?
