A playthrough of Sony Imagesoft's 1993 Sega CD FMV shooter, Ground Zero: Texas.
Plays almost exactly like an unholy love child between Night Trap and Sewer Shark. It's awesome if you like those games, especially with how high budget the production was. If you don't like these kinds of games, well... this won't change your mind any time soon.

If people these days would only understand….just how amazing these graphics were plus this was the time they were experimenting and adding real actors with real movie cutscenes in video games!!!! These games were really ahead of their time. I remember command and conquer also did these scenes and even had James Earl Jones cutscenes in em 😢

Yeah, ahead of the time if the clock has stopped and you’re just starting it up. This isn’t a game. How was this? Considered a game? I get lost in Yoshi‘s island. I get lost in donkey Kong country. So much to explore and interact with, and so much to see. These are just VHS in the worst quality, That you get to temporarily interact with while watching these horrible horrible cut scenes. And these seem to be nothing but the same playable action over and over. The gameplay mechanics don’t even change. So it’s not a game. You change more gameplay mechanics in a damn board game. This is evidence of how easy it is to manipulate people into thinking something is cool. This is about as cool as the inside of an oven on a hot summer day.

@@foxdavani4091 It's not that rough. They realized the limitations, and this game has one (if not more than a few spots) where you can't just choose to shoot the guy on the left or right, because it could be either one. Yeah, it's not a huge improvement. But they tried to make it less monotonous. And as for Sewer Shark, I played and beat it multiple times. It takes about an hour of play to make it through, and it's definitely what I would call a _game._ A shooter that occasionally throws curveballs at you that you can't see until you crash into them, but it's still a game. And read the manual for it, you're going to need it for that one.

FUN FACT - The actress that plays the role of DiSalvo in this game, Leslie Harter, is currently married to legendary film producer, Robert Zemeckis, since 2001. They both have two children. Leslie now goes by the name "Leslie Zemeckis" now.

1:33 absolutely legit FMV quality for a 1991 CD add-on (the Mega-CD) to a 1988 console (the Mega Drive) and would look even better on CRT screen as these systems are intended to be played on. Seriously the Mega-CD is still so underrated and/or misunderstood that it's almost like some sort of running gag by now. The Mega-CD *did* deliver, it *was* the next level with full FMV support, its own CPU (a second M68000 @12.5 MHz), awesome sound thanx to the Ricoh 8 channels PCM chip and great visual FX thanx to the ASIC scaling/rotation chip which was heavily used in games such as Battlecorps or Soul Star. So given all its great features, the Mega-CD retail price of $300 was NOT expensive, even less when it was lowered later on with the redesigned model 2. In comparison, the PC Engine Super CD-Rom² add-on (also released in 1991) was retailed for the same price despite not being able of even a quater of what the Mega-CD can do. It's crazy! At the time, the only way to get equal or better experiences as the Mega-CD was with high-end PCs that cost at least $1500. Then sure there's also the CD-i which was actually released earlier than I remembered (1991 too) but it cost $1000 and needed a $250 peripheral to handle FMV. I just wish that every Mega-CD FMV sequences used the best video codecs available namely TruVideo or Cinepack just as Ground Zero Texas uses. I also wish that more games made heavy use of the system's ASIC chip, especially from Sega's part since the Mega-CD was primarily created with the ASIC chip in mind so it's puzzling that Sega barely used this great feature. Still an awesome add-on with many great games.

Thank you! That was very well said! I advocate the Sega CD 32X combo, because it has amazing potential that seems untapped. Night Trap for the CD 32X in 1994 did a great job at going to nearly DVD quality, but the actual game playing mechanics were minimal. Doom for the Sega CD 32X combo would blow away even the PC version if programmed correctly.

27:31 this gives me PTSD. I HATED THEM FUCKING STORMTROOPERS! The bane of my existence playing this title because this part was hard though to the credit of the production, their look was bad ass. I was fortunately able to beat this gem quite a few times, but I always remembered them Stormtroopers. Hear talk Ground Zero Texas is gonna be rereleased soon as a Limited Run Game like Double Switch and Night for the modern systems. Time to relive trauma on the PS4 with them troopers.

I used to own this game before a parental split made me end up losing it. I really liked it back in the day, FMV games have a sort of odd charm to me. Too bad the difficulty could get pretty schizophrenic. I love how casual though your guy takes all this like, they roll you off a chopper apparently explaining nothing on your way there, because they do so casually on the ride to the bunker in the jeep, like as if you were discussing what to get for lunch, and it's like "Oh yeah, there's aliens and what not, good luck.", like this completely history altering piece of information, and everybody's like "Anyways, here's your Sega CD controller to shoot them I guess. Hope they don't leave the line of sight of these 4 easy to break cameras."

I don't understand. Are you supposed to be protecting people, or are you just trying to stop the aliens from shooting the Battle Cam? How do they know it's there, and why are they shooting at it? Then when you shoot them and the game cuts to a close-up shot of them falling, it's always the same shot of the same person falling. It's repetitive, annoying, and distracting. And that god-awful sound loop that drones on during the shooting scenes. I've never even played this game, and I already don't like it. I think I'd just rather play Mad Dog McGree.

Why did people think of these things as fun? They’re not even games. There’s no replay value at all. Does not even anything interesting going on. It’s just a crappy movie that you get to temporarily interact with. I’d rather watch a real movie. The fact that people thought of this as fun shows how bad the 90s really were. And how easy it is to manipulate people. This is garbage. Yeah Nintendo look like a toy but at least when you’re playing Nintendo, you can explore a little worlds and journey with characters of all kinds. There’s nothing here. Ground Zero, Texas, and all these other FMV games should never have even been thawed up. This is what laid the groundwork for the death of Sega. They spent an entire generational time with junk. They could’ve spent that time developing actual good games.
