You can do one of two things during an extended smoke break. You can always get outside and stretch your legs. But, it is also the best time to hit the shower because the train isn’t rocking!

I believe you were in a Superlliner transition sleeper with the shower on the upper floor for those passengers riding in a upper floor roomette as the lower floor is reserved for Amtrak employees, including their rest room, shower, and small lounge area... I have seen these on the Auto Train and on the shared train sets of the Texas Eagle and Capitol Limited... I have seen some passengers on other trains lately within the past two to three years during Amtrak's Superliner fleet refurbishing program comment being in a roomette aboard a Superliner transition sleeper... There aren't many of these cars, but there are some in Amtrak's fleet...

I love Amtrak, however several trains have removed the dining car and replaced it with café car food. when you pay for a room the café car food is terrible . The Capitol Limited and the City of New Orleans, book a sleeper and get sub standard food. My Wife and I were disappointed. I may be doing a lot of flying in my future.

Thank you both for riding the rails for us! You are both awesome! And, thank you for showing us the good, the bad and the ugly of train travel here in America… we were disappointed with the east coast train from Washington D.C. to New York. The train looked dirty, outside and the window you were filming from had many dirt spots, making it hard to determine if it was birds or what! Graffiti was everywhere, run down buildings, and more. It is very sad to see. We would rather do a road trip….

Another great video! What's the best way to gauge whether or not Amtrak will still be serving breakfast/lumch/dinner at the time that you board? For example, if I board at 2PM on X train, I would assume that lunch would be over, but, how would I gauge whether I could have breakfast/lunch/dinner when I board? Thanks in advance!

There is nice scenery on the Coast Starlight near Santa Barbara, the coast, and by Crater Lake and Mount Shasta In Northern California and Southern Oregon... The Empire Builder has nice scenery in Marias Pass adjacent to Glacier National Park in Montana, and the Cascades west of the Columbia River to Seattle and alongside the Columbia River to Portland... The Southwest Chief has nice scenery north of Albuquerque thru Raton Pass. The Texas Eagle best scenery in my opinion is around Alpine and Marfa, Texas, but others may disagree whether a desert with small mountains is beautiful. The eyes are in the beholder whether you see the desert as beautiful. As for the east coast, in my opinion the Adirondack north of Saratoga Springs has nice scenery, as well as the Capitol Limited south of Pittsburgh thru Cumberland to the Potomac River...I believe these are most passengers favorite scenery riding Amtrak...

How do you control your diet on your travels? I can see that it would very difficult.
@ronclark97244 ай бұрын
As a diabetic I find it almost impossible to dine well riding Amtrak... While Amtrak may offer a vegan meal, it isn't suitable for diabetics. Can't eat starch: bread, potatoes, rice, or pasta. Fresh fruit is no where to be seen in the diner. About the only thing in the diner I can eat is the tossed salad, the green beans, and the meat. Traditional dining is better than flexible dining, but not by much... I bring boiled eggs, small sugar free fruit bowls, and unsweetened apple sauce bowls, mostly items that don't need to be refrigerated or cooked...

Would love to take a train trip but sooo expensive, especially if you get a bedroom & roomette are uncomfortable. We tried train from Seattle to New Orleans, to Chicago then back to Seattle. Trip was suppose to be Around 1,000.00 5 years ago… GOT CANCELLED AFTER WE RODE INTO CALIFORNIA DUE TO HURRICANE DOUBLE COMING IN…. Tried to redo trip but upgrade to bedroom and was told would be 7,000.00 to do same trip…how do you get cheaper travel on trains

Look out for the Amtrak promotion the 30-day rail pass riding in coach usually for ten different train trips... It's a good deal on the east coast with numerous regional day trains, but alas not as good a deal on the west coast without numerous regional day trains like the east coast. Unfortunately this pass does not include sleeper accommodations, or included diner food the sleepers have. Frankly I would splurge to get to the east coast, and then spend most of the month there before splurging back to the west coast. When I used the 30-day rail pass I spent the entire month on the east coast with ten different short train trips avoiding sleepers running up and down the east coast from Maine to Georgia... New York City, Albany,, Boston, Portland, New Haven, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC, Raleigh, Charleston, and Savannah... Next year I intend to do so again with different cities of which I have not planned as yet, but I do wish to see Montreal, Saratoga Springs, West Point, Niagara Falls, Toronto, Hershey,, Gettysburg, Charlotte, Spartanburg, Atlanta, and New Orleans.... However ten different trips means either hotel stays several nights or sleeping with friends somewhere along the east coast...

I've learned to start checking fares regularly online 11 months prior travel. Prices fluctuate & will get higher closer to the day of travel- if there are any rooms available. Accommodation charges in sleeper cars have become increasingly expensive & they're incredibly popular.

I love Chicago-style pizza, too, but not so much the deep dish. The deep dish pies are expensive and made for tourists. If you want to appreciate the Chicago-style pizza experience, then order a “thin crest”, pub style pizza, which is cut into squares. The “thin crest” pizzas are nothing like a NYC thin crust. I would describe them as NYC thin crust on steroids. The toppings go all the way to the outer edge, so there is no crust on the edge.

If you’re going to recycle content the least you could do is add some new narration to freshen them up. The cabin sounds and ugly northeast corridor vistas become boring.
