Feb. 2 was Catholic Candlemas and in Germany the weather-predicting animal was a badger (although bear or fox were Euopean regional variants). In the US it became a groundhog. The weird thing about Groundhog Day is that if the groundhog sees his shadow, Spring arrives in 6 weeks (March 16), and if he doesn't, Spring arrives even earlier. Spring actually occurs on March 21, 5 days later than the latest prediction of the groundhog, so it just refers to the colder weather. Not-so-Fun-Fact: In the scene where the groundhog drove, it bit Bill Murray's finger to the bone. (He still says it's his favorite movie he made.)

The semi-official day count is 33 years and 350 days. Calculated by the shown days(41), mentioned days(414), wasted days(?), deaths(?) and the days it takes to master certain skills like ice sculpting, french poetry, and the piano(11,931). Harold Ramis originally thought it was about 10 years but eventually realized it was between 30-40 years. Great Watch!!!

39:48 No, they're saying that the man was just so old that his body wouldn't survive anymore. As you see, it didn't matter what Phil did at all. No matter what he tried, the man was going to pass away that same day. It's a good life lesson. It's really easy to get angry and scream at the sky (or others) because you lose someone dear to you. I lost my own mom just last year. But sometimes it's just the end of a person's life. Sometimes there's literally nothing that can change the outcome. The best thing to do IMO is to remember how great they were and to do everything you can to live up to the best person you can be. (Not trying to be what they think you should have been, but to be the best you're actually capable of, in whatever pursuit you choose.) It's all anyone who really loves you wants from you, anyway.

When Rita said he is all about himself, she was wrong. He actually hated himself and that's why he was so surprised she thought he acted the way he did out of ego. Later when Rita stays up with him and they are talking she says, "Maybe it's not a curse, it depends on how you look at it." That's when he decides to do something with the time he has and begins to improve himself, take piano lessons, begins to care about the people around him like the old man. Finally, once he can love himself and is happy with his life, then Rita can love him.

Someone calculated how many days phil was trapped in the time loop by adding all those that appear in the film and the average time it would take to know the lives of all the people, speak perfect French, play the piano masterfully, make ice sculptures, etc. The result of all that is about 32 years. 32 years caught on the same day. Under the guise of a comedy, the film is actually a tragedy.

Seen this so many times before, and I've only just realized this time around: from the setup of the movie, before the repetition even starts, when Phil announces he's thinking of leaving his job, he's *already* complaining about feeling like his life is the same routine with doing the Groundhog Day event. He says he's worried people will think he's going nowhere and not capable of doing anything different. (And, of course, the realization the old man is dying every Groundhog Day, uncared for by any family, friends, or by anyone else in the town, is such a sobering and depressing turning point in the movie for Phil..)

For those who don't know, a groundhog is also called a woodchuck, famous for the rhyme, "how much wood could a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck could chuck wood?" And, in the film (on the radio), you hear, "That's right, woodchuck chuckers. It's Groundhog Day!" Get it? Also, The Song is "I've Got You Babe" by Sonny & Cher. It spent three weeks at number one in August of 1965. Sonny Bono later became a U.S. congressman and Cher became superstar Cher (singing, acting and everything else in-between). See kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3vbeqprbdGefrM - the official video for the song. And, what the heck, here's the original Geico woodchuck commercial: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXnJk3-imK-Aq6M

You know it is an iconic film, when the title of the movie becomes a common saying in the English language about repeating something. No many films have that much of an influence on culture. That's very true. Always before, if someone would say "Groundhog Day" it was just a reference to the old story about whether it would see its shadow and get scared back into its hole, resulting in 6 more weeks of winter weather. Only after this movie came out did it mean doing the same thing over and over.

I can find only one flaw in this movie, the waitress asking for quarters. Back then small restaurant waitresses received so many quarters in tips that they would never need more. The animal in the movie is a species of Marmot and commonly called Groundhog (Marmota Monax), Woodchuck and Whistle Pig. The movie is titled so because, in America, a tradition of having a Groundhog predicting the remainder of winter is a fun notion. If the Groundhog comes out of his little ground den and sees his shadow, it scares him and he runs back into his den for safety. True nature of the Groundhog, for they're easily frightened and take cover at a hint of danger. I think they're an animal of North America only; U.S. and Canada specifically. Rocks, or "on the rocks" is just a term for (adding) 'ice,' and is often said when ordering (alcoholic) drinks. Flap Jacks are just another term for pancakes. I hope you know what pancakes are.

The groundhog also known as a woodchuck, is a rodent of the family it is found through much of the Eastern United States, across Canada and into Alaska. is a popular North American tradition observed in the United States and Canada on February 2. It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day and sees its shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den, and winter will go on for six more weeks; if it does not see its shadow because of cloudiness, spring will arrive early.

They never explain how or why he kept repeating Groundhog Day, but since it stopped repeating once he learned to love someone other than himself we can guess that it was "fate" teaching him a lesson. By the way, the guy that plays the doctor in this, the one who examines Phil early on for head trauma, is Harold Ramis the director of the movie. He was also Bill Murray's costar in the original Ghostbusters movies. RIP Harold Ramis.

"Why is it happening?" It is simply a metaphor for what life is like for people who live only for themselves. Every day is pretty much like the last...only living for others will bring a richness and variety to life that makes it worth living. It took Phil, apparently, many thousands of days to learn that basic lesson. Some never learn it. Even after Phil began to care for others, he still thought he was in control (playing "God" by trying to save the old man who's time was up). He had to give up that illusion before time he could escape the time loop. Wonderful film! Nice reaction, girls!

As I got older, I realized that I didn't really feel any smarter or wiser. I have just seen so much in my life that in any situation, I can usually compare it to something I've done before and maybe try not making the same mistake again. It's sad when you find yourself making the same mistakes over or never making the right decision. Maybe learning to do it right is wisdom. I know that living with doing it wrong and never getting the chance to correct it is regret. I suppose we are all living in our own personal Groundhog Day.

I used to think that when he says "Let's live here" at the end, that he was just being cute and spontaneous, but I think it was because he was afraid to leave the quiet, small town and return to the noisy city after so many years. Maybe it was like Brooks in The Shawshank Redemption. Phil might not have known if he could survive out there after all this time.

It's been estimated that Phil repeated that day for almost 34 years. It's no surprise that he lost his mind for awhile. Also it takes years to master many skills like the piano. Study and memorize french poetry, Ice sculpture and more. Just look at how perfect the ice sculpture of Rita's face was. That is years of study and practice. Just to impress her. He went out of his way over the years to learn personal things about many people in town.

They estimated Phil spent about 12,000 plus days or roughly 34 years stuck in a time loop to become a master pianist, ice sculptor, and learn about everyone in town etc. And the homeless man was just destined to die that night over and over again, not even Phil could change that.

The old man dying repeatedly, and Phil having no power to stop it was a turning point for him. He continued to help him have a great day that day I'm sure, still knowing he would die, but it didn't matter. His outlook changed to something different after that, he gained a new resolve

Phil is not related to that homeless old man. I think he calls him "Pops" which is a term of endearment for an older man, which does not necessarily have to be related to you. It's like calling a friend or someone "brother" or "sister" even if they are not related to you. The hospital did not kill the old man! The nurse says "Sometimes people just die", meaning that sometimes there is no specific cause but the person just dies. That is basically what "natural causes" means. It was just his time. The homeless man in this movie is just used to kind of show a new phase in Phil's life where he actually is becoming a good person who cares about other people (and also to show that some things really are outside of our control).

Europe (Russia) has marmots, but groundhogs are a subspecies of marmot native to north america. They have a ridiculous number of alternate names. From wikipedia: "chuck, wood-shock, groundpig, whistlepig, whistler, thickwood badger, Canada marmot, monax, moonack, weenusk, red monk, land beaver, and, among French Canadians in eastern Canada, siffleux."
