The percussion solo beginning at 4:23 is absolutely brilliant. The sounds he is getting out of the instruments are perfect, as is the mic placement. Compositionally, it's a masterpiece of thematic development. He draws heavily from middle-eastern and world rhythms, while also managing to introduce polyrhythms, beat displacement and even full on metric modulations. He approaches dynamics from a place of symmetry and balance - he always uses louds and softs in equal parts to tell the story. Probably the most musical percussion solo I've ever heard.

The thing I love the most about this (and indeed, the rest of Snarky Puppy's music) is that unfailingly I hear something new in every play through. Fantastic.
@NeverHopeless1008 жыл бұрын
Not only the music is extremely enjoyable with all its complexities and colours (I'll never get tired of that groove at 2:05), the video captures the spirit well and it is not to forget the last scene (Ferrari's stare). I think it adds a whole new sense to the music which got much deeper and darker in the last two minutes- an intense vortex that can be seen on the percussionist's eyes. A wise artistic choice. This band never ceases to amaze me, as well as all the other musicians who collaborate with them and the people who work with the band in other areas. Amazing.

I've totally lost count of how many times I've viewed and shared this totally mindblowing video of an absolutely stellar performance!! Väsen is my favourite Swedish folk group of all time! Fabulous players! They've been around for ages, Snarky Puppy is a fairly recent addition to the evergrowing list of amazing new artists that have blown me away. Becca Stevens was totally new to me when I watched the vid for the first time when it was posted in the beginning of the year but she's a brilliant singer-songwriter that I've listened a lot to lately with great great pleasure. And André Ferrari...my goodness...a more creative and truly original percussionist is almost impossible to find...a legend!

I cried, really. The final part... Omg what definitely made me cry (in a positive way, of course, caused by awesomeness) was the last shot... I guess I can't really explain it. That close-up to his face while he ends the song with that delicated "ding" sound and his look into the rest of the musician, enjoying the last moments of sound, feeling all that connection between every one in the room... That's what I call an end.

yes Paula Berga you do get it .. I had a similar thought ... it's something about being so much inside the moment of creation ... where everything counts/ is important, and nothing - not even the most infinitesmal part or nuance - is for naught. His face tells you that - it's a moment of living ...
@drewper737 жыл бұрын
This song can almost be divided into two different songs, the part where Becca Stevens sings and the instrumental part that follows. The first time I watched this I couldn't believe that no one had mentioned Andre Ferrari, the percussionist who takes us under his spell for 2 or 3 minutes with the help of the singers repeating the, "Hmm, Um-hmm," being careful not to mess up the order. Being a percussionist myself, it's hard for me not to count while I listen to the rhythms, and the atmosphere, and let it wash over me.

As many have asked about this: The instrument in the beginning is called "nyckelharpa". The nyckelharpa is a Swedish string-instrument, and actually Sweden's national instrument.
