I grew up watching these in NZ, back in the day (I'm in my late 50's now ), the best sound your ever going to hear in a Rally car EVER NO modern Rally car will ever sound this good.

My old man got to see some of these events back in the day and I am eternally jealous. It might have been more of a tribute event, but he has some amazing photos of some legendary cars at the race to the sky in Queenstown in the early 2000s.

I'm the same vintage as you and I agree 100%. The sound is like a screaming banshee from hell. Nothing else comes close the these cars and they always looked like they were going some much faster.

Keep in mind, those cars are history. The reason newer drivers may be driving them more carefully is because if they crash them, that's it. They're gone.

1 versus the other: 1 - what is at stake? A group b driver is fighting for world championship, the other is probably trying to win just that rally. In november 2019 i saw a rally in portugal (altronix rally spirit) and the guest driver was stig blomqvist, and he was going so so slow... The car is a piece of history and he was going around to show the car but keeping it on one piece. 2 - Money? You are a group b driver and you crash the car realy bad. Next rally you have a brand new for free. If you don't crash, after a few rallys you get a new one for free. If you own a group b you try to drive it without pushing the limits and not crash the car, because it is expensive to mantain and repair and most drivers are not bilionaires. 3 - for new videos the guy chose tight corners and tricky side jumps and for the old drivers chose open corners and open roads. Now search for josef beres, hungarian pilot, any video and he goes fast. And search group b old movies and look how they drive slow corners. Not much diferent from the new, but remember what was at stake: world xhampionship and free cars vs national championship or single rally and you pay all expenses. Think about it...
@19SAS5 жыл бұрын
@@ricardo040385 there is no need to think about it really, i do agree with all you said and maybe my description was not that good, i know they cannot crash these beautiful cars now.... but in saying all that it still took a very great pilot to drive these cars and no one.. in my opinion, is as good as they were... Beres is a great driver, but he is NO walter Rhorl, he has an electric / cable handbrake to throw his S1 round corners, he also disconnects the front wheel drive at times to make it look more spectacular........... Group B drivers never had that option and would not have disconnected the front wheels anyway... corners were not picked to make older drivers look better, its just these days they DO NOT have those long sweeping corners for old classic rally cars.... but thank you for your comments...

Stig Blomquist in that S1 to his navigator in the last special stage of the Rally of the Lakes in Finland. He had to make up 2 minutes: "Ok. Now you shut up." "Why?" "I know this road since I was 10 years old." "Ok." He then went out and in an insane demonstation of self belief and concentration, made up the time and won the stage and the World Championship. As they pulled up with the brakes smoking and the tires gone, the nav said: "just as well you knew the road" "I didn't."

Great video - thanks for the upload! I don't want to bring anybody down, but I feel someone needs to point out for any KZbin viewers who may not be too familiar with rallying that one very sad difference between regular drivers and the stars of Group-B is that far too many of the latter are no longer with us. These cars were dangerous and insanely difficult to drive. The turbo Quattro that started it all had none of today's 'smart' tech, perfect weight distribution, traction control, intelligent gearboxes, driver-tunable dampers, computer engine management, trick diffs or any of the rest of it. It was a brutal monster once described (very fondly!) as the world's fastest tractor. ;-) I'm certainly not saying that today's competitors have things easy: it still takes enormous skill and courage to drive ANY vehicle at 100%, whether it's got 2 wheels or 4. WRC drivers have to be just as committed as the Group-B guys (and 1 famous French girl) were, but they face different challenges. Things are more technical now, just as they are in Formula 1. A lot of what happened in Group-B was pioneering stuff: brave, professional drivers - test pilots, even - exploring unknown territory. Far too many were lost. It's significant and encouraging that a fatality in rallying is now an unusual and shocking event. [Note: I was a very minor amateur/club rally driver back when this footage was shot. I never got to drive a Group-B car, but I still love them, and the bellowing shriek of Audi's glorious 5-cylinder engine still haunts my dreams.]
@19SAS5 жыл бұрын
very well written piece and explains group b very well, yes they are slower than modern WRC cars, at least on tight twisty stages, but the spectacle of controlling these fire spitting mad machines is what, as a young lad of about 20, left me speechless and in awe and admiration of these pilots, true heroes of a time gone by and some were lost to young. The funny thing is not ONE group b driver actually said these cars were too fast, they only said they are too fast for the type of stages they were being raced on, 0=100 as quick as any F1 car of the same era, Group b would not work in this modern times, they just would not be the spectacle they were with all this modern tech making it look all to easy, these sights and sounds will never be seen again in anger and we are the losers for it..

I did a bit of (amateur/club) rallying in the 1980s, and once had the very great pleasure of shaking Hannu Mikkola's hand. End of a night stage (it was snowing on the Lombard), his Quattro over a minute down and shedding oil, but he still took the time for a few friendly words and a smile. What an absolute gent. Anyway, my mates and I didn't call people like him, Alen, Salonen, Mouton, Rohrl, and all the other Group-B greats mere 'drivers'; we called them 'pilots'! :-)

Later on I was near his car working on my beat up old Datsun 510 adjusting the carburetor. I caught him stealing a glance, he recognized me and winked. I got the impression that if he wasn't in the middle of a race he would have gladly come over to help me out.

Best? No. Most iconic? Arguably. By all accounts their handling was a bit flawed with the weird weight distribution due to engine placement. You can even see this in a lot of the videos from Group B, the Quattro looks less composed than the other front runners. Audi themselves were developing a mid engine car to replace it in Group S which is an indication of flaws they were looking to address. The best looking Group B car is, of course, subjective but my vote goes to the 037.
@19SAS2 жыл бұрын
Not quite my friend, Audi Sport (Not Audi) built a mid-engined quattro around late 1983-early 84 against instructions from Audi top brass, when Audi found out they told Audi Sport to get rid of it, it went against their principles of having their rally car "Moderately" like their road cars. You are right, it would have been an uphill battle to stay with the mid-engined cars, but they werent that far behind. the S1 only had 6 rallies, lead 3 of them b4 having issues and won one. Mikkola set records in the 1000 lakes 1985 thats i believe still remain unbeaten, i could be wrong, It was more the engine being to far forward of the front axle, as apposed to being front engined that handicapped it. Todays shopping trolley rally cars prove that with clever technology you can make a 300hp front engined car faster, if not as fast, as a 550hp mid engined car. To maker the S1 beat or compete with the rest of the field was actually quite easy for Audi, its just they would not change their principles, to do so would have make their concept seem flawed. Group S was a joke, stupid one off cars so glad they never came to light. I do agree with you tho the 037 is a beautiful car, as apposed to looking like a brute like the rest of them.

I'm not sure. Easier to control yes, but crash protection was something of an afterthought in the 80s and early 90s. Even regular production cars were often potential death traps. It's not thát strange that Group A claimed lives as well (I believe even more lives among competitors) and I doubt Ott Tanak and his co-driver would've been unharmed from that somersault a few years ago if that had happened in a Group A or Group B car.
