oh nostalgia, even though i was too young to ever have had the privilege of watching these beautiful machines in action, i still almost feel like shedding a tear every time I see awesome videos of them. You have to admit, group B rallying would have to have been the most entertaining form of motorsport in history.

This videos has mostly parts of the Rally of Portugal, witch was great! Fortunately I was lucky to see this cars! Since a young boy, I always went to watch the rally and I'll never forget the thrill of it! The huge crowds walking lots of kilometers from the parking spots to the track and along it, the spirit around the rally, the sound of the cars and people shouting when the car was approaching, the tracks, everything!

I think that WRC´s are efficient and beautiful cars but, those were the days... those were unbelievable powerful machines that made every rallye fan drive hundreds of km just to see them... I live near Sintra and every year was a true celebration on Lagoa Azul and Peninha (this video has images of those stages)...

Exactly. Absolute monsters. The Lancia Delta S4 done a test at Estoril, Portugal and posted a time that would have placed it on 6th place on the grid for that years Grand Prix. Mental to think how advanced they were for their time.

group b was before my time and its new to me but holy shit it is amazing to watch. the cars, the speed, the sound and the drivers got some mad skills. you just dont see hardcore badass racing like this anymore. why dont they bring this kind of rally racing back?

@jordiniks Its a MG metro 6r4. Its hard to understand that its based on a FWD minicar with about 70hp while this one got 420hp and 4wd and mid engine

That's the Citroën BX 4TC. A Group B car that came to late and had no succes. It only did three WRC events in 1986, before the team withdrew from the scene.

its an opel manta 400 with twincams and weber 50s on rally form, and a slick shifting closed ratio 5 speed gearbox. It is one of the greatest cars in standard and rally form..

I sat in the cockpit of one of the two brilliant models of these machines (the metro and the audi) at the rallying museum in the UK back when I was 15 without the faintest clue that I had my sorry butt plonked on one of the greatest pieces of motorsport history...

In fact Scotty, during this video we see an RS200 in the very Sintra stage in which the 'final' accident occurred. There is footage of Markku, Tony Pond et al talking about the drivers' 'strike' that took place immediately afterwards. Almost (if not all) the Gp B drivers pulled out (and if the drivers didn't, the teams did it for them...

It's not about lack of skill. It's about lack of fear. I also like how no one needed a warning whistle to clear the way since you could hear these turbo monsters from miles away. WRC cars have no soul.

If group B ever comes back, I promess I´ll watch WRC more offen. Motorsports are made of heroes, and nowadays we don´t have´em anymore. They drove really fast cars. Drivers like Senna (F1), Vattanen (Rally) were considered ruthless and fearless, therefore watching motorsports on those days was much more exciting.

One thing I like about this video is that it seems to have a lot of the more obscure Group B cars...the other vids only have the "big" ones, like the Quattro, the Lancia Delta, the Renault R5, 205 T16, etc. This has others, like the Nissan at 1:34. I've seen the list of cars that were intended for Group B on the Wikipedia page...not all of them ever did race, but there were a lot of different cars.

I thought for a second it was an RX-7, but it has the wrong sound. And I've only been able to find one pretty poor video of a Group B RX-7 taken in NZ, which is too bad. I'd kind of like to see some good footage of one.

Currently what I am trying to say is that currently WRC cars are very astronomically expensive. As well as seemingly complex for small teams to run. Take for instance group a. Teams used to have to build a production car loosely based on the rallycar they plan to enter. This was of course difficult for small teams financially as they struggled to complete the homologation requirements. The Fia's reponse was to make the WRC class so that teams can make a production based road for rallying.

@nanofrass They could use the handbrake but youre right in AWD, unless you are going into the corner hot or swing the car into the corner already, using the handbrake is not very effective because the braking force goes through the center differential to the front wheels as well

Dont have a link but will try and find one. I remember seeing it in the back of a car mag a few years back. Lancia done a private test at Estoril in 86 and their time would have put them on 6th on the grid for that years F1 GP....mental or what. I cant remember if it was Toivonin or not.

The Manta 400 was fully homologated into Group B. It's predecessor, the Ascona, was a Group 4 car.

Agree with you in F1, where they actually race on the same tracks (some of them at least), and you can directly see the times improving over the seasons, even if they started cutting the power a lot. However, in rallying, you can't do the same, stages differ from season to season in the same rally. I think an S4 Evo would still be quite fast in the WRC today. Might be 200kg heavier than a Fiesta or DS3, but it pushes 700 horses, more than twice the power.

agentolshki, Group B was banned due to the high mortality rate, with 3 or 4 drivers dieing in a 2 or 3 year span and one crash taking out around 5 or 6 spectators and injuring 31 or so more if I remember correctly. I'd love to see the likes of the 6R4 and the 037 and the RS200 tearing up the rally circuits but it just isn't likely to happen any time soon I'm afraid

First of; really great compilation :) Second: Audikiris, Quattro has never been the best 4wd system for rally-use, it just happened to be that 4wd was seeing the early stages of evolution in car handling when Audi presented it's 4wd back in the days. 4 are better than 2.Today, their 4wd system is overrun by Subaru (best system for regular road-cars), and for off-road; the Range Rover system excels. -This goes for the EU(Norway) That just about sums it up :)

You should also state why this happens and that engine is not mid-sized like you said. The problem was that the boost given out by the turbocharger was NOT limited! With unlimited boost engine components suffer from variable thermodynamics while limited boost keeps every single component to static temperature. Wastegates are there to control the overboost, in Group B they of course didn't do that.

In a drag race Group B cars are epic. Brutal acceleration. But they are hard to control, which makes them super fabulas for the fans. Great drivers really made it a spectacle.

In very sharp corners, they seem to drive the car to the outer edge to get around the corner, make it looks like they could not use the handbrake in the 4wd group B cars. What i have heard it is that way, is it true?

In WRC, Nascar, and LeMans, they do have stategically placed medical units as well as fire marshalls and race marshals in place so that they readily attend to drivers/co driver who get injured in a race. They're doing the same thing in both Hillclimbs as well as some road rallies such as the Targa Newfoundland and Prescott Hillclimb and of course Goodwood. If these guys who run the events can have supercars compete faster than WRC with rules,why can't the FIA? That's some food for thought mate.

@MasMember Yes they are. The year after Group B ended, the Group A cars sat better stqge times. Do you know why? They got better tires and suspention. A Group B car have better acceleration

Just like to mention that in 2004/5/6? (cannot remember) a metro 6r4 (probably the slowest of the Groub B Cars) came 8th in Ireland Overal against the WRC cars (at the hands of Colin McRae RIP) just goes to show that a well driven S1/T16/S4 could possibly still win a rally even 20 years later against modern technology.
