yeah usually i'm not a fan of trance at all, but this fits so perfectly, and "like a dream" is exactly what it's like, Group B to me is like a dream, something i never got to see because i was too young at the time. the whole vid just sends shivers up my spine, i must have watched it 15 times in the last few months. beautiful.

OMG. I was born in 86 and my first "matchbox" was Peugeot 205 T16. I know its odd, but last weekend I was watching the rally in Hungary, there were such cars as opel ascona 400, LADA vfts, group B cars. They were competing with group N evo´s and impreza´s, actually the ascona was on some stages faster than an celica gt4. I love these cars.

antituga - what does people's love of football have to do with it? My father was an amateur footballer (played as a striker) but he also loved racing. He bought an 1985Audi 4000S because of Audi's success in rallying and at Pike's Peak in America. The dealer put a sticker on his car: "Audi: The Double World Champion". He drove that car to his matches. Football was my first sport - and rallying made me fall in love with racing. One has nothing to do with the other.

Those records were so much easier to break due to the numerous technology nannies present in the wrc cars. The people who were able to harness group b cars were gods and deserve more respect.

Let me tell you something,man.Group B cars are considered to be the fastest,the craziest,the most powerful and the most dangerous rally cars ever made.Modern rally cars are fast,but not even close to Group B.For example,modern rally cars run between 170-180kph on gravel,while Group B cars were able to go over 200 kph on gravel roads.That's a big difference.

Note that there are no clips of the cars flipping over. That is because the driver's big massive cast iron balls kept the CG so low the car couldn't be flipped.

Actually, there were 2 competitive cars that were rear wheel drive, the 037 Mont'e Carlo and the R5 Maxi turbo. There were other's but they weren't very competitive. The R5 was a champ on tarmac.

U also have 2 remember that the s4/t16/rs200/6r4 were all purpose built machines, using tublar chassis and space frame construction, and the S1 was just a quick Quattro sport, whos was then just a quick shortened road car.Audis problem was vehicle weight, weight distribution, and unreliabily due to parts being designed in house ie genuine as apposed to most of the other vehicles using foreign parts, ie designed else where. On todays rules the S1 would race in a class below the WRC cars

Truy a amazing time in autosports. Yes the fans were risking their life, but they knew they were. You dont stand on a road with a car driving ass fast a spossible on it and expect it to be a safe place to be. Blame the fia if you want to blame anyone. Rally now is nothing as exotic as this, and will never be for the forseeable future. These cars and rivers are truly of legend.

Well,on current rally tracks Group B cars will be just a little faster or slower,but put today WRC cars on the roads on which Group B cars were driving,WRC cars will be smoked by Group B cars,because the tracks on which Group B cars ran were ideal for the power these cars had.And you're right about Group B rally cars for not being the cars-they were rockets with four wheels.

conti...3 When Senna died, they did not ban GP cars, their speeds went up and up. What they did do was make it safer. Change certain dangerous corners etc. Improved vehicle safety and crash absorbing materials. WRC cars are just as fast on twisty stages, so what is the difference. My humble opinion is that it was easier for FISA to turn their backs, rather than tackle the problem. P.S. Sorry for going on a bit

Shit ... I was 10 years old when i saw this amazing machines at Portugal Rallye 86 ... still remember the sound ... the smell ...and eating lots of dust .. :) Manny ppl are saying that the crowds were crazy by stading all way on tracks ... IF you have 1 shot to watch those cars live wouldnt you go ??? Sure was a huge risk with cars passing by at 140mph ...but ... worth it...

Just like to mention that in 2004/5/6? (cannot remember) a metro 6r4 (probably the slowest of the Groub B Cars) came 8th despite going off backwards at 80mph, and set some fastest stage times in Ireland Overal against the WRC cars (at the hands of Colin McRae RIP) just goes to show that a well driven S1/T16/S4 could possibly still win a rally even 20 years later against modern technology.

i think the same. fisa was make a stupid panic reaction. and about the cars, you are right. cars are not guilty for the accidents. as the toivonen said after the tragic rally in portugal 1986: "the accident was not caused because the speed or the type of them. its all becouse the fans was just too close of the road" . and about the audi pulling off, i think they did that becouse they realised that they are no longer match to the much lighter and much faster s4/t16/rs200... even walter said that

It didnt have the development time that the rest of them had. It only had one full year of competition and the "Evolution" version of the RS200 was intended to have almost 800 horsepower. Also Martin Schanche claimed the 1991 FIA European Championship for Rallycross Drivers with a Ford RS200

Yes the S4 and the RS200 would have dominated the sport for a short period of time but you are forgetting that the Peugeot 405 was already under development and would have been ready to compete in the 88' season. Considering that they won the Dakar rally 4 years in a row 87-90 there is no question what car was the best performer. Peugoet was, and will always be the dominating team of the group B era. (!) Lancia and Audi get far too much attention when people talk about group B.

Group B cars was made in first part of '80. the question is: what if we take a group b and we made an upgrade to modern technologies?I still belive that an S1E2 Audi Sport is the best car ever.Modern WRC has lot of hi-tech assistant servo and different suspension system, gearboxes , breakes... what if a modern pilot has to drive one of the mosters that , at the age, made GROUP B so interesting and so full of crazy fans?

they knew the risks and they took em thats teh spirit of Group B rally and most other racing events. the funny thing is in F1 a person died and all they did is change a barrier on a chicane. i wish they kept group b and just made the cars a bit safer but no slower.

Conti..1 Its also a common mistake that drivers were complaining about the cars being to fast. Infact they were not, they were saying that the cars were too fast for the type of stages being used those days. And were also saying that the stages were too long/ not too dangerous, many drivers did not like rallying through the night in these cars, and this could ahve been sorted also.

that's right, but the problem was that was in short time period, so they start to panic. also, part of the responsibility goes to audi, becouse they was pulled out of the season before it was canceled, but you can blaim them. they was just rifused to race untill something was done about crowd control (it was after acident in portugal) and wenn henri and sergio died, only two rally after portugal, it was the last straw. but i repeat, it should NOT be baned!

my links were based on a advisory level, and we were never part of desision making. It was purely kneejerk reaction to a problem, that if thought about could have been solved. 300bhp group b cars were very easy to obtain, one thing was for sure they needed group b cars to resemble more the common mans car and the cars then resembled nothing like. Another reason why Audi refused to move the engine into the middle, so u have to respect them for that

Group B wasn't canceled due to Toivonen's death alone, although it was the final push for the ban, Group B was ahead of it's time and the drivers were gods among men to be able to drive those beasts, with today's safety and technology, I'd hope to think something similar would start to rise again. P.S Why can't I hear the cars in the first half properly :'(, S4, Quattro and 6R4 are the best sounding, S4 my favourite though :)
