A mother and father in Scioto County, Ohio stand trial in the death of their infant son. Young Dylan Groves was found dead 30 feet down a well last year, prosecutors said. Authorities blame the boy’s parents-mother Jessica Groves, and father Daniel Groves-for what happened. The defendants are charged with aggravated murder, murder, kidnapping, endangering children, tampering with evidence, interference with custody, gross abuse of a corpse, and four counts of felonious assault.
Problems stemmed right from Dylan’s day of birth on January 10, 2019. The boy was born with drugs in his system, authorities claim. Daniel Groves later got the child back after showing that he followed regulations, but the defendant allegedly started missing important dates, including court dates and doctor’s appointments.
Investigators claim that both defendants bolted on a four-wheeler when authorities dropped by the home for a checkup on May 20, according to WLTW. Deputies obtained a search warrant, got Jessica Groves to give herself up quickly, but Daniel Groves was only arrested after a six-hour standoff. Authorities said they found $42,000 of stolen items at the residence, and later found the late infant in a well.
Deputies said Dylan Groves didn’t even make it to a full three months of age. They claim there’s evidence showing he’d been dead since March.
A coroner determined that the victim had been slain. The child sustained several bone fractures, had been wrapped in plastic bags with duct tape, then put in milk crates that were wrapped in chains, and other bindings, according to WSAZ. The creates were weighted down with rocks and a weight, authorities said. As in his birth, Groves died with drugs in his body, according to the coroner. This allegedly included methamphetamine.

Cough medicine can cause a false positive for methamphetamine, amphetamines, and cocaine. So can certain inhalers and other medications. Eating a poppy seed bagel can get you a positive result for opiates. My brother’s life was ruined by a false positive drug test while he was in a DUI program...He paid hundreds of dollars for an independent, federally-accredited lab to do a hair follicle test, which was NEGATIVE. The program administration didn’t care, wouldn’t accept it. The prosecutor didn’t care, wouldn’t accept it, wanted to throw him in jail for THREE YEARS. For a single positive drug test, with refuted evidence from a more reliable test, done by a professional laboratory and not just a county worker. He ended up leaving the US, coming home to Canada where we don’t lock people away and ruin their entire lives for no reason. People with drug problems are still people. They need services and support, and help to keep their families together safely. Removing every child from every mother with a positive drug test would require a massive amount of taxpayer dollars, as well as a massive amount of voluntary foster parents! It’s much better and much more cost-effective for social services to provide wraparound care and support services for families. It’s less traumatic for everyone involved, and leads to better outcomes. This case is not representative of ALL families of babies/moms with drugs in their system at birth. We can’t go around yanking families apart just because of this one family’s tragedy/crimes.

In hind sight, we can certainly say this. But as things are happening, you don't know what is going to happen. For all they know, the parents just had one night of partying. Bad choices when pregnant, but they could have had a normal life otherwise. I think social workers don't know their back end from a hole in the wall. They take children they shouldn't, and don't take those they should have. Certainly they should have done more digging before handing over the baby. They could have spoke to family, neighbors, the older son and any school or medical doctors they had been in contact with. But I have heard of many instances where people called social services out of spite. And social services jumped in and took children because of false information. Both scenerios are just as bad. Without them researching what people around these families have to say, they are just making up their minds without the facts. Yes, social services dropped the ball on this. If they cannot do the legwork, then they should just keep their noses out of things.

Another CPS failure. It's the same, all over the country. We always hear about how over worked and under paid these people are. I raised 5 children and was over worked and under paid, but I raised them all well and healthy. One look at that baby and the answer was there, he needed to be placed an a home where there was experience dealing with drug dependency. That whole business of keep the "family" together is a load of crap. They are just doing whatever they can to save money, it's always about money. The whole medical profession in this country is going to hell in a hand basket. Tiny babies are allowed to be abused, the elderly are allowed to be abused, and in between, unless you are in jail, where you get excellent care, you are at the mercy of whatever medical care you have access to. This trial is a waste of money, how come they'll spend it on this, but not on the ACTUAL care of a defenseless child. I want to know just how much the state of Ohio is paying to defend these killers.

I agree in some cases but as a CPS worker, you don't just have to worry about five kids. You may be monitoring 30 cases while receiving a new case everyday. We focus on maintaining a family because it has shown to be more traumatic to remove a child than to keep the family together with services in place. It's really a focus on doing the least amount of harm. I can only speak from my experience but money really never played a factor for removal and being positive at birth is definitely an auto removal. The only times I did not remove for that is if they were positive for weed or if there was a sober person that would take care of the child while the parent is in the home.

She was lying. In the end the Hospital did made the right decision with this case. However, in the moment with this case, she was trying to play judge, jury and executioner. I just get very "holier than thou", judgemental vibes from this woman and that is NOT the type of personality that should be in CHARGE of a social worker department. She lacks compassion, understanding, etc. Obviously that doesn't apply in this case, but I wonder how many other people she's self-righteously sneered down on and used her position of power to "punish" for being addicts, too poor, too young, a single mom, homeless, or in whatever way she deems "less than" herself. Addiction is a vicious and deadly habit that is incredibly difficult to battle and getting clean because you find out your pregnant is brutal and requires a massive amount of self control and a will that most addicts don’t have. Having said that, it’s horribly selfish that Jessica didn’t find a way to stop using during and after her pregnancy. 2. CPS are terribly overworked, over loaded and under paid as well being woefully understaffed and lacking massive financial resources. 3. I believe CPS did the best they could given the restrictions and policies they have to use as guidelines. 4. I don’t blame the medical staff or CPS for what happened to Baby Dylan. The only people responsible for Dylan’s tragic and preventable death is the two lying manipulative selfish and pathetic junkies sitting at the Defense table.....

All true, but the parents, if they couldn’t get clean, could have requested that Dylan stay with the foster parents permanently. But we’re talking about irresponsible addicts, which is why CPS should have stepped in and taken him out of that home for good. Major CPS reform is needed!

It’s important to note that when CPS refers a family to an outside resource it is either 100% mandated by the court in preliminary hearings. Also if referrals made to outside resources by CPS are left voluntary and the parents do not follow through you can bet that the family court judge will take that into consideration when determining placement.

I understand that CPS always tries to return children to their families, however, at some point the system needs to change. Returning kids to their parents is often more dangerous to the child. I would argue that if CPS cannot be bothered to properly monitor the home situation after returning a child (in this case, making absolutely sure that the mother had another living arrangement separate from the father AND confirming that the father had childcare set up for when he had to work so that he would not be tempted to rely on the unfit mother), then CPS better not return children to the family.

That sounds equally horrific! What makes my heart break is that there are people who would give a limb to have a child. These neglected children could be loved, adored, and cherished. I just wish there was an easier, legal way for these kind of parents (the ones that see a child as a burden and don’t want them) to just relinquish the child without any question at all. I know there are “safe places” where people can drop a child off, supposedly no questions asked, but even in those situations the anonymity of the parent leaves so many questions about the child left unanswered, i.e., medical history, genetic history.

This occurred in 2019, within Scioto County, in the state of Ohio. When they speak of S.O.M.C. , they are referring to the Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio.

I’m a little confused, why on earth would the defense attorneys think it was ok to send baby Dillon home with dad when that is what they did and that poor child ended up dead. He was unable to protect the child he knew she was high during the pregnancy and still CPS failed.

That baby should not have been given to the parents. They needed to investigate this more before releasing that baby.

I see it the same way. The wicked mother denied her son life after she gave birth to him as a drug addict.

I don’t know how this chick a.k.a. social worker has a job? Just say yes or no!? They Tell her to speak up! She acts like she’s listening then talks faster an continues to talk the same .. I would not want her at my business or around kids ever. She doesn’t seem like she’s well educated on anything. Yikes...

My child was born without drugs in his system but I did use late into my pregnancy. I was a full blown heroin addict. I am a recovering addict coming up on 4 years in October. My son was a NAS baby. (Withdrawal Symptoms). They were mild but he was a success story. My son remained in my custody because I earned that right. Today I work for the agency that introduced me to recovery. I am a Certified Peer Support Specialist. I help support pregnant and parenting women going through the process of recovery. My son has no lasting damage from drug exposure today. He is happy, healthy, completely normal and loved. My point here you may ask? You are comparing apples and oranges. Not every case is the same. Not all people are the same. She could have made a change and done something with herself like I did. Don't get me wrong. I know EXACTLY how lucky I am. But I also know how hard I worked. Drug users aren't bad. They need help. THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A DRUG USER/ ADDICT AND A MURDERER. Her blaming it all on the drugs and that she didn't mean it and can't remember is crap. People make mistakes on drugs but you don't murder people and forget it. You can't put it all on the drugs here.

The scary thing is that it is CPS protocol to release a child to a parent that tests negative while tue other parent us to leave tue home here in New York State. I saw it a lot during my short time as a Case Planner with CPS ongoing services.

The defense had a tough road defending these 2 looser fiends. They gave the best defense they possibly could for the accused. Also the fact that Daniel claims to not have known about Jessica's drug use (a cold lie by the way), makes his judgement suspect. He lied on and off the stand. The jury was right in finding him guilty as well. His lawyer says Daniel is planning on filing an appeal. He needs not waste anymore of the courts time with that foolishness.

He was also actively using drugs no doubt she was actually influenced by his use there seems to be some confusion about that here simply because he cheated a simple urine scan at the hospital

What really weirds me out is the fact that all of the hospital staff said Daniel confessed to having seen Jessica do heroin 2 days before the birth and yet the defense is trying to claim he had no knowledge of her drug use?

It was also a huge red flag that the nurse testified that he told them the mom was too high to go to pre natal appointments. So clearly he knew about it.

Seems like only the hospital staff cared about what happened to little baby Dylan. We can surely know that CPS couldn't have cared less because they took him out of foster care in less than 2 weeks and sent him back with the dad based on drug tests that weren't even done in front of CPS workers and they should have been. They should have known that they were a bunch of junkies and using other people's pee to pass them. Now the poor baby got murdered because of CPS and these monsters Daniel and Jessica
