I am very surprised that although Ms. Craft is a caseworker, she is not a qualified professional social worker (usually with an MSW). I am also really disappointed to hear Ms. Craft state that the return of the child takes priority over the protection of the child, in this case Dylan Groves. I don't live in the USA. I have to wonder if child protection workers across the United States qualify to protect children with only "a minor in social work" and a BA degree. It seems that this caseworker's colleagues and the administrative staff are also at fault for the child's death. The attitudes displayed protective of the agency and cavalier. Clearly the well-being of the child was not given top priority, despite the fact that a highly competent foster mom was available to care for Dylan Groves. 😥

Before the baby was returned to the husband, he was subject to a drug test which came back clean. That result made him able to have this child returned to him. We find out later in the father's cross examination that his urine test came back clean because he substituted his 15 year old son's urine for his own. Had he not done that his urine would have been dirty and the child would not have been returned to the father either. Another stipulation for the baby's return was that Jessica was to to be allowed in the home or left around the children. By falsifying his urine results Daniel Groves set in motion the forces that led to poor Dylan's demise. They both deserved the sentences they received.

I’m a social worker in the US. I have a masters in social work and a bachelors in psych and a minor in neuroscience- I am a licensed therapist primarily, and that primarily is my role as a social worker. I’m also on the younger side and only finished my training and degree about four years ago. For context in the US social work is the only route normally for CPS casework, and you do not need a masters degree like you do to be a mental health professional- even though my undergrad wasn’t in social work the training I went through was SO extensive compared to just a BS in social work. And my bachelors was fairly relevant and even so, I actually live in Ohio as well (in a bigger city, I graduated from one of the better universities here for all degrees) and the program is very tight. My cohort had about 45 ppl (so let’s say 50 that I got to know well that we’re pursuing this degree too) most of them were my age, in their early 20s, a couple ppl were 30-40. Almost everyone was going for direct practice, and we often talked about how the stigma behind social work is thanks to CPS. We reached the consensus that many of those who wanted to work with children and support them would do so without working for CPS because they didn’t want to be part of and partake in a system they saw so harmful. The system is underfunded, case workers undertrained
@Billybloop3 жыл бұрын
In the UK social workers actually have far too much power to intervene with families and child protection is about something that amounts to social engineering. Even then they can't save every child from being murdered. They play whack a mole with a blindfold. It's ridiculous to expect the state to know what's going on in every home and to be able to see into the future. The state is not a second parent or at least it should never be.

@@sad-qy7jz I have a BA in social work and that’s what we exactly talked about-how CPS is the bad rep for social work. I too did not want to enter the field when I finished my BA.
@sad-qy7jz3 жыл бұрын
@@alicea5 yesh st least with the BA there’s a lot of accel or 4 + 1 routes to getting your masters and you are used to field snd all the crap that I struggled to get used to at first so you definitely could easily get your masters and your “i” if you wanna see clients or practice privately. But social work is about so much more than just clinical work.. we were a DP school but I learned how to organize, network with coalitions and engage in community programs, implement co-ops, shape policy, even conduct research that helps the folks in psych design interventions that they test. CPS and 5150 screenings are usually when people interact w social work and it’s never a good experience for anyone and it tends to be people who are less experienced, don’t receive fair training, have massive caseloads, supervisors who are out of touch and it’s tough out there. But social work is very much set in a distinct philosophy- self determination and the value of all humans and the importance of relationships and support, looking and systems and complex patterns and dynamics, advocating for change and questioning systems, materialism snd a lot of continental philosophy. Just because people don’t interact with the good ones or the good ones like you who have minimal qualifications don’t choose to work for corrupt organizations doesn’t mean we don’t have ethical principles and core values we abide by that define what we do and how we do it. The SW who didn’t show her face svrhsklt only had a minor in social work lol... notice the clinical social workers at the hospital all saw red flags and tried to work with the nurses and CPS and other orgs to ensure the child was safe and get the parents help- a few graduated from my program lol so it’s funny how they just called the “hospital staff” but the lady with CPS wasn’t just s case worker with CPS she was a social worker to them. Also again, I would have been way more diligent and documented extensively and tried to advocate for additional intervention but like.. as a social worker you aren’t supposed to see others’ as less valuable and make assumptions. She didn’t know they would kill their baby. Like hindsight is 20/20 they could have been a family wirh s lot of baggage slowly getting stable and doing the best for their kid.. they were NOT, but you’re an awful SW If you assume s drug addict would kill their baby. And she clearly wasn’t trained well on home visits, risk assessments or safety plans and her documentation was like non existent. But as a social worker, I blame the system not the individual. The system is creating the issues not a bunch of bad apples conspiring to ruin lives working for CPS

She isn't CPS. It can be confusing because states label it different. But in my state this lady would be called a family preservation worker. Very different. Different responsibilities. Unfortunately if a parent is lying they are almost powerless to do anything. The cps worker was that first worker who made contact at the hospital. I think if the public was more aware of how child welfare services works, the different departments etc... that would be helpful. It would also reduce some of this stigma with cps workers, because again this lady isn't even a cps worker. But I only understand that because I've seen the system, it's not fair to everyone else who is clueless about how this all works.

Great friggin "safety plan" I feel the CPS workers should be held accountable also. They eithet remove kids without a real reason or they leave children with dangerous parents. A new system needs to be put in place instead of this joke of one. We (society) need to do a better job protecting the children

So let me get this straight in my head, Jessica wasn’t allowed unsupervised visits, however she was always at the house when cps went there and was at every appointment with baby Dylan. Next thing to get straight in my head, they hadn’t seen the baby and the couple were being evasive, yet it took 2-3 months to finally decide to take Dylan into protective custody, by which time he’d been long dead.... She asked Daniel jnr if Dylan had any injuries/if he was ok and took his word for it. Then the cps worker had the absolute balls to say she did everything she could for baby Dylan 🤔 Even Jessica’s lawyer thinks she failed 😆

Everyone knows that Jessica stayed at the house whenever she wanted and both of them lied about that. There are possible several reasons why she did not want to be seen on T.V. As for her short answers of a straight yes or no. She has probably testified in court many times so knows to just answer the question mainly yes or no. I am not defending her and I will be the first to say children's services make many mistakes and have returned way too many children to home where the child ends up dead. The main problem I see is they are under the rule a child is better off with their biological parent or parents. That is not always true and has been proven not to be by the number of children that do end up murdered after being sent back to the abusers.
