Thank you!! I’m so excited! I raided my city’s recycling bins yesterday for a ton of containers, bought the pool noodles and nutrients and I’m teaching my family to grow food. I live in Denver, CO. I’ve been trying Mike’s methods (microgreens, hydroponic greens). I’ve tried kale, bok choi, a variety of lettuces and basil. I’m growing in solo cups in my east facing kitchen window. I can put 7 cups into 1 plastic shoe box. I’m using 1/2 strength Miracle Grow tomato plant food (1/2 Tb MG to 1 gal h20). Using Denver tap water. Plants are growing great. Been using clear plastic 16oz. cups from Walmart. Making cover for cups from newspaper. Had problems with algae, but I like to see how the roots are growing or if plants need more water/nutes. I do make my own nutrients, for soil, from used coffee grounds or ammonia (nitrogen), crushed chicken bones and seaweed (phosphorus), dried banana peels (potassium), crushed egg shells (calcium), epsom salts (magnesium, sulphur). I make 2 fertilizers: 1 for growth that has more nitrogen and 1 for flowering/fruiting that has less nitrogen and more phosphorus and potassium.

This is great! I planted a lot of large vegetables on my balcony, & while I did get a lot of green, I did not produce much of the actual vegetables. I think I’ll try micro greens next season. I really like that you can get so much quantity with little space, a lot less effort, & of course cheaper.

Something you might look in to doing is this... have a water pump. A very small one is all that's necessary. I have a 4.8 w water pump running constantly and the cost is about 5 or 6 dollars a year I'd I were to never shut it off. Have the water pump into a vertical piece of pvc full of marbles. Yes marbles. What this does is constantly structures the water making it more bioavailable a well as oxygenating the water for a much better nutrient uptake through the roots. As "pseudo" as this sounds, it works phenomenally. You are also replicating nature by doing this because you are creating vortexes and energizing the water, as well as preventing stagnation.

Hey Mike! Thanks again for this solution! I tried planting tomatoes and cucumbers and Swiss Chard in a 3 downspout setup. In the Cali summer, you have to water every 2 days! Thanks for the info Dave. Hey, the micros on that grow box were only 3 days old since I filmed the other video. They are pretty green now. I left the big wood one in the open to get some sun and was gone all day on the road. We just had a really bad thunderstorm, gonna check it out in the morning, yikes. Do you put the same amount of Epsom salt, I have seen everyone use half that amount? I may mess around with that in a few containers.

Yes, I started scrounging to upcycle today. Had some clay pellets and put my first Bok Choy grown from seed, in a starter trial.... Making a tea for nutrients. I have comfrey growing and worm castings on the way. Binge watching everything hydro. Off grid and trying to avoid power consumption! Thanks for the reply.💖

Hello! Thank you so much for your videos. Some measurement questions: 1. What is the high of the 2x4 planks? 2. what is the shelf length of the 2x4 planks? 3. What is the length of the PVC containers? Thank you!!
@KeepOnGrowin
@KeepOnGrowin 4 жыл бұрын
The length of the shelf is 4', heigth is about 7' . The containers are slightly smaller than the 48" shelf. Some look smaller because I was reusing old downspouts of varying sizes.

Is it their regular garden mix or the one they use in their Aerogardens? I am experimenting with the Aerogarden one, it will actually be in my next video or so. The regular garden one kept going anaerobic on me because of the lack of circulation.

@@KeepOnGrowin I first learned about microgreens a month ago. Since then I have been devouring every video I can find on growing. Yours are my favorite, I love your out of the box perspective, and your presentation is so straightforward. I have done a small amount of wood working in my life and I am looking at a way of making little microgreen gardens to fit on someones kitchen counter. It has to be simple for the customer and beautiful. Putting together everything I have learned from watching your videos, I think I can design the perfect prototype. One other quick question. It looks like for that box you didn't use any medium, right? Do you think it would it work with a coco mat cut to fit. I imagine you are a very busy guy and appreciate that you took the time to listen and respond. Keep on Growin and watchin the birds. Thanks Eva Bird

Mike, thanks for getting back to me. I like your noodle ring idea for supporting seedlings having bought my first set of grow pots and some grow plugs. For raising seedlings in general can I conclude from what you have said is that for certain items like lettuce, minuba, tatsoi {leafy greens} you start them off as microgreens. The other types {tomatoes, eggplants and capsicum} do you just buy earth raised seedlings from the nursery and remove the growing medium before placing into a noodle ring? Sounds like the noodle makers are in for a rush of business. I went to my local brick-a-brash store tonight looking for noodles and almost got one past the checkout. My wife was there and stood her ground saying I couldn’t buy these new $3 ones because there are ones at home. Got home, found my old noodle and it does not have a hole built into its centre! Sometimes trying to save 2c is not worth the effort. Cheers.

@@petermarsh4993 I start everything as a microgreens, basically that's all a micro is. I by the one's at the nursery when I want a head start otherwise it is cheaper growing your own. You can use the one with no hole in the center. Make your cut half way and pinch a small piece out for the stem. Thanks for all you input, appreciate it much.

If you are in Canada looking for these nutrients, I found them at geckogrow.ca. I'm not an affiliate or anything. I just spent a lot of time looking for this in Canada and couldn't find anything on amazon.ca. They sell a 3 steps or 2 steps kit and ship from Calgary.
