Thanks so much for updating us on what’s growing in your GreenStalk. I tried GS for the first time last spring and was not successful. I am going to try again in the next couple of weeks to start a fall garden and hope I’ll see better results. I’m going to try direct sowing most plants this time. My main problem was trying to do too much from “scratch” as a new gardener, and I got overwhelmed by figuring out a recipe for potting mix, indoor seed starting, how much to water, when to up pot or transplant, etc. I’ve purchase some quality bagged potting mix for one tower and I’ve amended the soil mix I created for the other 2 towers. All I need to do is fill them back up with soil and plant the seeds. The only plant I’ve started indoors for fall is collard greens, and that’s only because the master gardener resource for my city didn’t give a date for direct sowing them in fall. Your GreenStalks are quite inspiring! Please continue to show them regularly…I’m not finding too many gardening channels that do that consistently.

You'll never be successful. It's pots are too small unless your growing herbs. It's a scam

We have had times where our crops haven’t done the best but a lot of that has come down to our soil mix being too dense or sunlight issues. Keep trying! :)

I thought you’d find this interesting, last year I did a green bean Greenstalk tower, and I absolutely loved it. After most of the spring and summer with no issues, suddenly I occasionally had a broken branch. Come to find out, it wasn’t the weight of the green bean plant itself, BIRDS were visiting the GreenStalk to try to build nests and they were breaking branches. The only reason I figured this out is because I found one the nests they started and wouldn’t you know it, it was exactly where the broken branches were. Once I covered up the tower with netting, the problem disappeared.
@GutenGardening8 ай бұрын
Oh my! I appreciate that story so much! I am impressed you also figured out the issue. I just found a next in one of the pockets of our GreenStalks about a week ago. I removed it (it didn't have eggs in it yet), and I will now know to keep an eye out! I am glad you are having success with the green beans too. Have a wonderful weekend!
@mybackyardhomestead1448 ай бұрын
@@GutenGardening No way!! The conclusion I came to is because the green bean tower sometimes has all of those green beans hanging down, when you stand back, it looks like a tree and the pockets definitely look well hidden for bird nest. I planted two green bean towers this year and I am proactively planning to put a net over both of them. I love birds and even having a bird nest in my yard but I don’t want birds living in my green bean tower.

Finally got a couple of green stalks, are you using the leaf for your beans. I have the plant supports. Also on average how often did you water them. Like watching and learning from great gardners like you .

Thanks for showing how well bush beans can grow in a GreenStalk planter. I just bought my first GreenStalk with plans next year to transition from planting vegetables in my 3 small raised beds to planting in the GreenStalk. Over the years my raised beds aren't getting as much direct sunlight d/t our neighbor's trees blocking it. The GreenStalk will be easier to place in a sunnier spot without building a new bed in our backyard.

Are you growing dwarf varieties of these plants or full size? Are you starting most plants from seed? Do you grow peas? If so, do you have a suggestion? I'm buying a Greenstalk next week and plan to garden with my 6 year old grandson this summer.

Ignore the other idgit. Everyone I watch love their GreenStalk. I got a couple this year and they're great! In the Fall I'll use one to grow 60 bulbs of garlic. That'll save me from having an entire raised bed taken up all spring and summer for one crop! ❤

I keep considering the greenstalk but I live in such a high-wind area, it's probably not a good idea for me. It looks cool though.
@GutenGardening Жыл бұрын
We have had some pretty harsh storms in our area with gusts of 50-60 mph and haven’t had any problem at all. They are really sturdy when filled if you start them off level.

Wondering what you use for fertilizer for your greenstalks

What soil and fertilizer do you use? Your Greenstalks look greet
@GutenGardening Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! We actually usually mix our own, but this particular soil is Organic Miracle Grow mix that we got on clearance for $1 a bag. (One of those end of season deals). As to fertilizer, we use Organic Hollytone and then supplement as needed.

I have the top two tiers planted in my greenstalk. Plants look great but the beans are just not that good. Many Are curled and they are just not getting very big. 😢 I have the right potting soil etc. mine are jade bush beans. I was going to plant the whole thing out next year in beans but now I’m not so sure.

Greenstalk is worthless. Maybe good for small herbs or small greens. No way can you grow potatoes yet alone sweet potatoes
