Always great to see you. The updates on these are great. They're looking very promising. I'm going to be starting my own willow cuttings this year from an old tree scheduled to be cut up after the winds blew it over. Gave me plenty of shade in my youth fishing on his river so I've taken several branches from him. Let him live in in some form. Many thanks. Ps. I had no joy with the mango seeds. They didn't like the midland climate in summer and gave up.

+Dan Eggleton Sorry to hear about your mango trees. I too am having difficulties, but not given up. I did an update on How to grow Bonsai Mango Trees from Seeds Part 8. In this update I share my failures. I am delighted to hear the story about you and the willow tree. These are very easy to grow and you will also have preserved the tree to live on from a cutting of a branch. Good luck and thanks for your feed back and comments. Iqbal mikbonsai, London

Your Willow cuttings are looking really nice! I like the pot you put it in, also. I have several Willow cuttings that I have potted. If they survive the winter (they should), I'll post some pictures. Happy New Year!

The tree had been chopped down and taken away when I got there. Luckily, there was more than enough short branches and twigs left in the area. They're just starting to throw out roots. I'll keep you updated Mick.

And yet ANOTHER excellent and very informative video Sir! Thank you for sharing it, along with your ideas on Bonsai! Now I need to find a few willows to Bonsai. LOL... I was lucky enough last week, and found eight 3 gallon Amethyst Falls Wisteria at a local garden center for only $20 each! They are just beginning to flower now 5/29/17, and their trunks are approximately 1 1/2" - 2" in diameter. If you happen to have some time, can you please share an idea or two on how to thicken their trunks? Once again, thank you for sharing your fantastic Bonsai work! Best Regards, Ben
@mikbonsai
@mikbonsai 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, Plant them in the ground and the trunk will thicken faster. Place a ceramic tile in the hole in the ground. Remove the tap root and place the tree on it and finish planting. The roots will grow horizontally and in a radial fashion, like the spokes of bicycle wheel, ideal for bonsai. Lift the tree out of the ground when the trunk is thick enough. Also planting on a ceramic tile makes it easier to lift. Best wishes, keep in touch and good luck with the Wisteria. Iqbal

Where may I purchase training pots such as these? The ones I have found so far seem too small for the size willow starts I have.

You can buy them on ebay or a large bonsai nursery near you. I was off YT for a few years, hence the delay in responding. I am back and making bonsai videos once again, I hope these are in improvement on my previous ones. Do watch and comment on my new videos. Please also subscribe and you will not miss any new videos. Number 2 looked really good! Does it matter on the diameter of the cutting to start a willow bonsai?
@mikbonsai
@mikbonsai 4 жыл бұрын
No, but if you want a thicker trunk, then yes, in which case start with a larger diameter.

I have a question. so after watching this video a few times I have successfully got the black willow in my back yard to root with no troubles at all. Now a few weeks ago I was down south near Waterloo and seen some nice weeping willows. I finally found one that did not look like it was on someone property. I took a few branches and put them in the bed of my truck for the 8 hour drive home. Once home I put them straight in a Pail of water and placed them in my basement cause we are still having some below freezing temperatures during nights. 2 weeks later and the leaves are all dried up and there is no sign of rooting? Was the 8 drive to long and killed the branches? Or do I need to give it more time?

It's a combination of keeping them indoors, and lack of adequate light. Move them out and it there is any life in the cuttings, they will bounce back. Another problem could be that its freezing cold ! I did it in the summer when it was hot. Willow trees belong outdoors , even when its freezing cold. Word of advice and caution, when collecting always seek the land owner's permission and it is on common land then its the local authority. (had to mention that legal bit). Good luck with these and do let me know how you get on . Further updates of my willow trees are to follow in the coming weeks. Also my monster bonsai willow tree to be videoed has been videoed for the the first time and will be released shortly, please subscribe and also hit the bell to get notifications of my uploads and you will be able to see what I am doing and how these are progressing. Best wishes Iqbal

How often do bonsais need trimming or pruning?
@mikbonsai
@mikbonsai 8 жыл бұрын
It would depend on how quickly they grow. Chinese elms grow very quickly and need to be pruned very six to eight weeks, the willow trees here would be pruned once a year as the new growth is allowed to become long, just like on the big willow trees. Then the unwanted branches are removed and others shortened if relevant to the design of the tree.

Hello my bonsai friend, They are fine and growing like crazy, now in dormancy. Unfortunately I have been very busy and did not get the time to include an up date on these trees which as you know were started from a branch cutting. I know you too have a few of these and would like to see an update. I will try and do it March/April. I trust your are also OK and doing well. Best wishes Iqbal London
