Spruce, Pines and Junipers grow in cold countries, they will not survive in a hot weather and no winters. Just as Ficus, Bogenvelia etc will not survive in cold countries, unless we take them indoors as the weather starts to get cold heading into Winter. Focus on trees which are local to you as they will not need extra care and attention. I hope this is helpful. Keep watching and giving your feed back and comments.

Bythe way. Can you cut half or one third of the way through the needles ? Or we must completely remove the needles ?
@mikbonsaiАй бұрын
@@MehranAshkanian You should only remove the needles completely which have turned yellow/brown. As for green needles, these should never be removed completely as new growth sprouts from green areas. That said, you can cut back half, a third or even more, as long as you leave some green needles behind.

Nice tree. I believe my own monster crab apple might also be a Nagasaki crab apple (but not 100% certain).
@mikbonsai2 ай бұрын
Thank you Jason. Mine is close to 60 years old. I purchased it from Mike Jones this tree and a beach forest. he had grown all the trees from seeds or saplings. The crab apple was a sapling from Nagasaki when he got it. Sadly he got arthritis and could no longer after his trees and sold them off. the trees I got were 50 + years old and that was 10 years ago. I could never get to grow trees that old at my age, so I started buying old trees. I have many photos taken by mike of the trees I bought and he kindly gave them to me. If you ever read this, thank you Mike.

Hi Iqbal. I hope you are still on YT. I live in South Africa (where PA is native) and have three different size trees. They all need repotting, which I am looking to do next weekend. The largest will also need some pruning and wiring, and I suspect they will all need some root work, as well. The two smaller trees should be fine, barring some fresh soil and perhaps some light root work. (They're too small to wire, just saplings at this point.) Do you have any videos on Ficus Ginseng? I'm finding it difficult to get any clear direction on YT on repotting and/or what kind of soil is best for this tree. It's about three years old and has managed fairly well on its own. But I want to help it really flourish. Many thanks, Iqbal.
@mikbonsai2 ай бұрын
Hi Dom ? I was off youtube for five years and am back now. I know these trees are native of South Africa. They grow in desert conditions and when growing them we have to create similar conditions that they are used to in the wild. These are succulents as there is no wood in the trunk or the branches. In the desert conditions there is very little rain and that is when the roots are growing and seeking water. When it rains, the roots get the water and are in a relaxed mode. As the soil dries out the roots again start to grow. The bonsai trees have to follow the same watering pattern. I tend not to wire these trees, the clip and grow should work. You are aware I live in London UK, I take PA's out doors during the summer months and bring them in during the winter months, before the temperature starts to fall. As far as the soil goes, I mix my own and you too can do the same, I use compost number 3, horticultural grade sand, horticultural grade grit, Pumice, horticultural grade pine bark in equal quantities. As for your Ginseng ficus, you should treat it as my ficus, I have recently up loaded three videos on a very large ficus which got damaged during the winter of 2022 and how got it to recover and its progress. The is also an earlier video which shows what the tree was like before the damage. 1) old video showing what the tree was like: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZ2kcoyuhb-di5Y 2) Three recent videos with detailed pruning, repotting and wiring. Treat your Ginseng same as I am treating my ficus tree. Your and my tree are same family. Latest videos: i) kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoW7c413rqepq9k ii) kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6Oqda14dp5pask iii) kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2K4oaKHl6uMmdk Good luck with your repotting and Ginseng bonsai. Just like the Ficus, Ginseng are very tough trees and will tolerate mistakes and neglect and bounce back. Leave me comments when you do watch my videos. Please share if you can as I was away for five year and it feels like starting again from Zero.

Great work and great explanation. I have a question though: if we remove all the bark up to the wood to do a air-layer, what's the advantage of doing an air-layer compared to simply cutting the branch off and putting it in a vase with moss?
@mikbonsai2 ай бұрын
Very thing branches may take root in sphagnum moss, I have to say I have not tried it, now that you have mentioned it will try it next summer and video it. I am not too sure that this method will work with such thick branches. Have you tried the sphagnum moss to root thick branches ? either way do let me know, I am interested to know and learn as its something I have not done. Great question, thanks you.

Thanks for watching and encouraginh feed back. No I don't keep any birds. We do have loads of free Green Parrots flying arround in large a large flock. It is these Green Parrots who make all that noise. These Green Parrots are natives of India. There are two stories which have been doing the rounds for over thirty years: (1) these parrots escaped from pet shop all those years ago and adapted to the UK weaither. (2) They escaped form a film set. No one knows how these Indian Green Parrots ended up in the UK and they have multiplied over the year. There you go now you also know but not any wiser than the rest of us.

Thanks for choosing this topic. Being a hobbyist with many trees in development I’ve found the use of a moisture meter to be extremely helpful. My limited experience has shown that almost every tree I have has specific watering requirements based on pot size, root development, species water needs etc. if you’re not an advanced hobbyist My advice is get a moisture meter and learn your tree’s watering requirements. Thanks, keep growing
