Amazing facts about CORK OAK:
The Quercus suber is an evergreen oak species which grows in southern Europe.
The cork oak can grow to a height of up to 20 metres.
The cork oak tree protects the environment and biodiversity!
The thick bark is stripped from the living tree and cut up to yield the cork, which is sold commercially.
High-quality cork is the product of the regeneration of the bark after the first and following cuttings, which can be repeated every seven years.
Cork is harvested completely by hand.
A Cork Oak lives for about 150 - 200 years on average, meaning it will be harvested about 15 times over its lifecycle.
Uses of cork include the familiar bottle-stoppers, cork matting, life-preservers, floats, hat linings, and shoe soles.
The cork oak tree can protect itself from fire.
Cork is recyclable.
Cork is also incredibly resistant to wear and tear, making it an excellent material for vegan leather products such as shoes, bags or bracelets.
Cork consists of thousands of tiny air cells, which is why it floats and insulates so well.
The acorn is the fruit of the oak. Acorns are valuable as food for pigs.
The Cork is one of the approximately 500 species of oaks.
Holm oak is similar to Cork oak but without its special bark!
