Thank you so much for this timely and important course! I am taking part in the upcoming Mittleider Gardening Method course and I really appreciate seeing an experienced and successful Mittleider gardener showing his methods and sharing his thoughts and experiences. What a true blessing. I will be following this series closely.

Thank you for that. I hope things don’t devolve to the point where we all need a garden to survive. But I agree, being able to grow ones own food and being self reliant are both great things. I appreciate the feedback.

Im loving this video and looking forward to the series. I started Mittleider five or six years ago when I found LDS Prepper videos. . I have five 4x20 ft x8inch beds and have always used sawdust and sand. Sams club usually has the green garden carts marked way down at he end of summer. I bought six at $12 each three years back and sold half in my restaurant for $25 to break even. Now lets sit back and watch some Fuelie videos. You must like drag racing.........lol TFS

I’m glad you found it. As a young man I was insane crazy about small block Chevys. My priorities have changed, but I still enjoy tinkering around with combustion engines.

Thank you! This is exactly what I need, I can read all day long and still not understand but if I’m shown down to the smallest detail how to do it then I’m good. Have you considered elevated beds on legs? I have arthritis in my knees and can’t kneel so my husband is going to build them for me. The only draw back i can see is the beds getting blown over in a heavy wind or tornado, but once the beds are level then long stakes driven in the ground and screwed to the legs will stop that. Look on KZbin Elevated garden beds.

I’m glad you found it helpful. There will be more videos coming soon. I’ve considered trying an elevated bed for herbs. My concern is that during the summer months any growing medium I use will get hot and possibly kill what we are growing. Anything planted in the ground, or in the instance of our grow boxes, on the ground, is able to mitigate the heat of our summer through the cooler soil below ground. Elevating a bed removes the possibility of cooling off the plant through its roots and the soil. My fear is everything would wilt and die quickly in the summer. Using shade cloth and ensuring the soil is moist during the warmest parts of the day, and possibly watering a few times each day, might help to get an elevated bed through the summer heat. It has been our experience that even our grow boxes on the soil absolutely HAVE to be watered each day before the high temps for the day or our plants will begin to wilt. I can only assume an elevated box will be less forgiving. Using legs for your elevated bed made from treated wood would allow you bury them in the ground and prevent it from blowing over.

@@smallblockfuelie I think this is an area where this method is not inclusive of all gardeners and growers and fails. Not everyone has the footprint available outdoors to grow in this way. There were no videos out there that makes accommodations for containers or elevated beds. That I could find anyway. That's why the elevated/chair gardening thing is more appealing and broad in that individuals who are senior, have disabilities, are renting, or have limited space to grow in/on can maximize on this. It's unfortunate that the MM examples out there don't expand on this more broadly / publicly as those growing in containers, etc. will face different challenges growing food as if their life depended on it. Maybe someone in the Facebook group is having a go at it in that manner, but I don't hang around on FB (or other social media) so I wouldn't know. FB is for the 'old folks' these days. In any case, I am doing my own container efforts with this, but it would be helpful to have better guidance from those who evangelize this method so much. While it looks fairly straightforward, it's also kinda rigid, uptight, and not encouraging for certain beginners.

@@wmluna381 I’ve been giving your comment some thought. I agree, there are not many examples of container gardening or raised beds for those with mobility challenges. Unfortunately in order to grow enough food to enjoy more than a few meals we will need more than a few containers. Containers, especially round ones, will take up more space and offer less growing area than a garden like you see in my video. For those with no other option we can calculate the volume of the container and figure out how much preplant and weekly feed they require. Containers do present unique challenges. But for those with no other option it can be done. Yes, some renters don’t have the option to put in a garden. Perhaps there would be other avenues such as growing on the neighbors property in exchange for a share of the crop. Community gardens would be another option, maybe even growing at a friend or relatives property.

@@smallblockfuelie Thank you for your thoughtful response. I'm glad that someone in this space made an attempt to address some of the undeveloped and untapped areas. I honestly don't think container gardening is going to grow enough food to completely replace what one can get at the grocery store in everyday times. It could very much make a difference in worst case scenario or broke-as-a-joke times. I am giving the MM a go in containers right now with a little bit of a twist and some side by side tests with similar plants. I can tell you that what I've spent on materials alone so far is nowhere near what I've spent on Promix this year so far. Second year in a row to boot. One would think that refreshing the leftover soil from last year would be a great offset and carry-over, but apparently I have a planting/seed/gardening problem. If every plant I have was a cat right now, well then... But, I suppose that's beside the point. 😅 So far, it seems that the MM stuff is going a much longer way than the soil has, that's for sure. It would still be nice to see more of those in the hardcore MM game do some side experiments the rest of us can possibly grow on. I'm just seeing the same stuff over and over so far. I totally see the value in it even being more natural and organic (stereotypically) as a default. I guess it's because I'm a data / info hog so that just drives me a little nuts. But, once again, it sounds like more of a personal problem on my part. 😄 Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Any suggestions on how to rid my growbox of early blight and nematodes? My first 2 years of mittlider box growing was great, then got blight and have never recovered. Not growing this year. Lost too many plants last time. Jim said to replace all the soil. Would rather not. Any other ideas?
@smallblockfuelie
@smallblockfuelie 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately all you can do with the blight is to remove the growing medium, treat the wood with a copper fungicide and start over with new growing medium.
