👩🏻‍🦰 A B O U T M E:
Ashley has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are KZbin, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s KZbin channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her KZbin channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

Yes! This is how I’ve planted potatoes for years. I haven’t heard of anyone else who plants like this. I often have huge potatoes. Finally another gardener who plants and grows the the same way. Did your Grandma teach you to plant your potatoes?

I threw my taters on top of the ground last year and covered them up with leaves. As the greens got taller I just threw more leaves on them to hill up. This worked amazingly and I just brushed leaves aside to harvest as I needed them.

That would totally work good. We had trouble with moisture when I just use plant debris, but if you can keep it moist absolutely that’s the easiest

Ashley, you chitting us?! But what do we do if we don’t have amazing potatoes to start with? I had great big awesome potatoes a few years ago, didn’t half them, then got sick and was in the hospital for almost two months during harvest season. I don’t even remember what happened to any of those spud harvests… I haven’t had any potatoes since then. Just a few store bought little potato starts. They just don’t do what my big happy chitty taters did!!

Thank you for your video and advising to keep the soil light and fluffy. Last year I tried growing potatoes inground, in a container, and in a cardboard box, to see what worked best. My largest potato was from the cardboard box 800 gm or 1 lb 12 oz. I only planted Manitoba Red. This year I'm trying Bellanita Fingerlings, a yellow-flesh potato.

The variety also matters. You wont get massive harvests with short season or mid season potatoes . Nurseries 95% of the seed potatoes they sell are short season and mid. Last year i grew potetoes on my own potting mix mixed with compost from my city. They grew so big until they stalled. When it came to harvest time i got pretty much nothing. 2kg of seed potatoes for 2.5kg back. My father keeps telling me growing them in containers is a massive waste of time and space. This time i got long season potatoes a 2kg bag. And i plan to use the same soil with more perlite and as a feetilizer going to use 4-6-8 from actisol

5:53: Piling "dirt" up on the sides ???!!! Where do you get the "dirt" ? Do you sweep it up off your floor and save it ? Do you wipe down your appliances and windows, rinse out the cloths and then evaporate the water out of the "dirt" ? You know, you can probably get some good dirt out of the drain at the car wash. Oh, I'm not letting THAT one go. Not after you preaching about soil not being "dirt". SINNER !!!! ROFL !!!!
@GardeningInCanada
@GardeningInCanada 4 ай бұрын
If your soil is loosen enough, it should very easily be able to come off of the area the side, the potatoes. If your soil isn’t loose enough and something has happened in which it’s compacted I would just grab some mulch and use that. If that isn’t available to you, I would take the time to dig up the soil around the potato without disturbing the roots and then use that to actually hill them properly.
