I prefer the Scotts because it grows slower and I don’t have to cut the grass as much. After cutting, it looks freshly cut for longer.

You can also apply plant growth regulators to mature grass to get similar results with most grass types. Low mow maintenance is definitely an overlooked factor sometimes.

I’ve always used Pennington and have been peeking at the EZ Seed wondering how it would compare with Pennington. Thank you for this video it was VERY helpful…. I am going to stick with Pennington and leave the Scott’s EZ Seed to try at a later time. I need my grass to grow back after construction damage very quickly before the yard goes dormant. I know for sure Pennington will do the trick :)

OK, so looking out toward the street, you have scott on the right and Penn on the left. At the 7 day mark, it was the same. On the 14-day mark, your boxes flipped??? It's still a good comparison. I'm just not sure which is which. You got a comment from me also. 😅

If I’m spreading this in and around my current grass to add grass around dead spots should I rake up all the dead turf grass? Lawn is brand new a year ago and grass was laid down from a farming company but some patches are dead.

You are 100% correct. Rye grass was the first type listed for each product and both have fine fescue too. The video was designed for the average home owner shopping at a big box store so I didn’t touch on the actual seed makeup of each product. Both products advertised growing grass fast, so that was the metric tested. Thanks for watching

Definitely put them in a “sun/shade” area and the location between the two planters was rotated as well. As far as water, pretty much twice a day. Once before work and once when I got home. Both products contain an absorbent material to help hold moisture in. Probably not the most scientific approach, but tried to treat both planters EXACTLY the same in regards to sun and water. Hope that helps 👍
@kennethgrossman289
@kennethgrossman289 3 ай бұрын
You used 2 different types of grass seed mixes too. the pennington was dense shade and the Scotts was a sun and shade mix. Those will be different percentages for seed mix with the pennington probably having more of a fine fescue mix in it for the dense shade, whereas the scotts will also have a fine fescue in it but not as much and probably have more perennial ryegrass in it to be able to handle the sunny area since it is a sun and shade mix versus the dense shade mix. If the test was done with both sun and shade mixes I am sure they would have both been pretty close to each other throughout the growing.
@suburbanacreage
@suburbanacreage 3 ай бұрын
A details guy, much respect! You're right they are slightly different but both were heavy on Fescues so i thought it would be close enough. The standard sun shade mix of the Scotts actually had some bluegrass in it if i'm remembering right so that might have made it a closer fight. Both great products, and i'll tighten up my testing parameters for next time.

I hate laying down grass seed. Not that it is all that hard it is the baby sitting. You have to keep the seed moist. Im busy so it is a bit of a hassle to remember to wet the patch a couple times a day. This year I have 8 patches Im seeding. I found an electric water valve online I will put on my spigot & attack my hose to & plug it into a timer. THEN the timer will do the watering. Yeah, I looked at sprinkler controllers but this was $8 and I have the timer. !
@suburbanacreage

I hear you dude, watering and consistency is the hardest part. Check out my pre germination video. By pre soaking the seeds in a bucket, you can actually get them to pop before you plant them in the dirt and then they start growing in 2 days. It cuts down on the watering significantly because once they start growing you can start dialing it back. Keeping seed wet is tough but soaking in a bucket is super easy! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYOuhWOQftx7nqs

@suburbanacreage
@suburbanacreage 8 ай бұрын
The key is keeping that baby seed wet at all times and both products contain a mulch that helps retain water to make this easier. Water as often as needed to keep things nice and moist, especially for the first week or two, then dial it back once you have some good growth.
@E85_STI
@E85_STI 8 ай бұрын
@@suburbanacreage thank you for the info yeah I set an alarm to water it daily and twice but this new one is the mulch so it should keep it hydrated. Now it did rain the last few days but it’s kinda cold so that might slow the germination process but it’s not freezing it’s just cold
@suburbanacreage
@suburbanacreage 8 ай бұрын
@E85_STI the cold will slow things down a ton. If you don’t have success, that’s why. Might have to try again in the spring. I don’t have an in ground irrigation system so my hoses are on timers like this one: amzn.to/49uUH3E That way I can set it to water every 6 hours for 15 minutes at a time. Works slick and then I don’t have to do it.

So I am a District Manager for the company that owns Pennington. I will say be sure to check expiration dates. We test our germination twice a year. Sometimes the Scott’s seed on the shelf can be up to two years old and that’s why it’s not germinating well.

Any amount of soaking is going to help you immensely with germination percentages. I like to live dangerously so I run it up until the very end when I see tiny roots coming out. That's the max though, you're fine and I bet they grow great.
@thomassosa2957
@thomassosa2957 3 ай бұрын
They “reversed” because you allowed the grass to take a larger cut when mowed. If you had mowed every day to ensure they never grew past a certain length you would of never seen a “flip”
@suburbanacreage
@suburbanacreage 3 ай бұрын
Great observation. When one sample got so tall it seemed wrong to cut it without cutting the other sample and when both samples were overgrown and needed trimming you are 100% correct that the taller grass took more of a beating because more was cut off. Thanks for your comment and watching my stuff!

It would probably work and it’s stupid easy to apply so for me, I like products that are hard to screw up and I’m currently testing the Scott’s on a larger area. Your biggest challenge this time of year is going to be water. Keep those little seed babies wet and happy, and that’s hard when temps get into the 80’s and 90’s. You might be ahead to wait until fall, also known as international over seed weather. Good luck!

Yeah probably but I personally would want some more seed mixed in there. I like the moisture absorbing material they use but it’s a tad light on seed.
